I like to make memories with my friends that we can always talk about later. I enjoy hanging out with people I know and trust and aren't with me because of what I own or have.

That's cool, and there's nothing stopping him from doing that in future, but as has already been pointed out he's on a trip that not many people could afford and/or make time for. Regardless of why people are willing to meet him, I wouldn't pass up help from someone who knows the area and speaks the language wherever I go.

I already regret hitting the reply button -- as I have no real desire to strongly defend the guy having never directly conversed with him -- but this just seems kind of naive and silly for a number of reasons.

First of all, I think everyone would agree that going places with friends/family/etc. that you are close with beats going alone, but we're talking about a summer long "backpack across Europe" thing here. OK, you're a cool person who has friends that would love to travel with you. Super. How many would be able to tag along with you on such a trip? More to the point, would you even be able to afford to do such a thing given how expensive it is and how hard it is to get away from one's responsibilities for that long? I know I'm in no position to do something like that. And if I was, I'm pretty sure that the only people who would be able to go with me would be those unable to afford it because they don't have jobs.

Secondly, the only reason that the guy can afford to take such a trip is because he's made lots of money focusing on this community. If I were in his shoes, I would absolutely be doing meetups with people. Whether he's genuinely interested in fostering this community because he cares about the users or he just cares about the money, this kind of outreach is savvy on his part. It probably wouldn't look all that great to disappear completely for months so that he could use the money he earns from running it to pay for him and his friends to live care free in Europe for a summer.

And again, let me reiterate that I'm not trying to be EviLore's #1 fan. Not to be a cynical hardass, but I don't care about his European vacation. The only thing I know about the trip is that he grabbed some girl's ass in Spain, and that's because there was a separate thread on NeoGAF and discussion here about it.

I have both IRL friends and internet friends. Not everyone can just halt what they're doing and go with you on a vacation. In fact in 2010 I organized a huge group trip to Yosemite with like 10 of my friends. Haven't even been able to do the same since, everyone is either in grad school, new job or on different time tables.

It's definitely hard to get friends together to do stuff outside the local area after a certain age.  I've been trying to convince ANY of my friends to go with me to Regina Spektor on the 14th in LA and I can't find a single person out of like 100 local friends from all sorts of friend groups.

Nice being married, you've always got a travel buddy. With the little one being born this year, we won't be going on any big trips for a couple years, but we are already planning the Japan 2014 trip.

If I had a bunch of money to pall around europe I'd be eating and hitting up their erotic clubs or generally spending all of my time seeing or experiencing stuff. Vacations are my time to ignore the internet at large and get immersed in real life.

I try to stay offline as much as possible when on vacation. It's really nice to not be connected 24/7.

Yeah a couple of the places I go to there is no internet access nor cellphone reception. And I like it that way.

I'm headed to a friend's cabin next weekend in the middle of Central Washington. We go every year. No electricity, no iPhones, no Words with Friends. Just some board games, a keg of beer, a river right in front of the cabin and 15 of my best friends. It's going to be glorious.

A lot of my male friends are whipped by their girlfriends now, it's pretty sad. I used to basically have one friend who couldn't do anything without his gf calling/concern trolling. Now four of my friends have the same problem. I don't even hang out much or go to bars a lot, although I do like Buffalo Wild Wings. But now even when we all want to go, at least two of them are getting jerked around. I've witnessed this so many times:

friend: hey I'm gonna head out with the fellas, then we'll go to Mike's house to play some games...
gf: what kind of games?
friend: uhh PS3 or whatever
gf: ok i guess if that's what you want to do all night...
friend: but it won't be for ALL night

I can understand a gf wanting to do stuff, and the balance between hanging with the fellas vs doing something with your lady. Overall I only get the impression that one of my friends is completely neglecting his gf, the rest are doing a good job imo.

Sometimes it's a good idea to willingly not hang with the fellas and stay home - chicks love that shit. But like I said, we don't hang out every night or even 3-4 times a week. Usually just once a week unless it's football season when we're hanging out two times a week, MAYBE three. None of us are chasing tail, at least not in the presence of each other lol. So it's not like this is a bad crowd of dudes prowling for poon, Cajole style.

The married dude we sometimes hang out with never has this problem btw. His wife is awesome

I stated this in that thread, but I don't really agree with this at all, particularly given your concession that it's inoffensive. We (as in people in general) don't always operate under the same exact definitions, but I've always seen racism as implying something more negative and discriminatory than simply encompassing all harmless stereotypes.
