Me, you, and tekno were the PC guys back then, but only me and you were getting banned for it. GAF was console age back then which is hilarious seeing the forums now. Also I was a race and Christianity troll...

2004/2005 gaf was all about ps2. pc game threads were such a small niche except for the biggest of games.

I remember friends telling me I shouldn't bother with GAF before I registered because as a PC gamer there was nothing for me there anyway.

its quite interesting how theres quite a large anti-valve movement growing on gaf at the moment.  i know its just part of the reactionary movement pretty much engulfing gaf at the moment, but still quite amusing.

valve has done good bringing the console games to pc, and in some cases bringing back certain types of games that were either withering or had moved to consoles, and creating a very easy and hassle-free hub for consumers. Kids running about saying valve saved pc gaming are likely to be either stupid or hyperbolic.

I respectfully disagree. I wouldn't say Valve "saved" pc gaming, because it wasn't dying to begin with, but they certainly helped contribute a large amount of reviving it with their Steam service. Of course, that doesn't mean it's the only contributor, as I think WoW probably had an equally important impact.

PC gaming had become ultra niche at the end of the PS2 era/beginning of this gen.

It's still niche now but it's not ultra niche. STEAM brought a bout the age of digital purchases being the de-facto method of obtaining PC games. All the current methods of purchasing PC games digitally are here because Valve made it popular.

theres a reason why the 'pc gaming is dead' meme became so popular, because it was kinda. okay, its obviously hyperbolic and shit, but the industry was clearly in the shitter. publisher support was at a all time low ( i would argue in attempt to kill it), the ports of games were fucking awful and during the early 2000s hardware moved arguably too quickly, i think.

did valve save it? nope, there are many others to thank such as blizzard and the sucess of WOW, but steam played a large role in bringing it back.

Sometimes I feel really out of place on GAF considering I was never much for PC gaming. It's like, every time I buy a new computer, I'll go on a buying spree for PC games, play them, and decide "nope, still not really into it"... Games-wise, I usually just use my PC for niche indie games and emus.

And it's weird, a lot of my real life friends used to be big PC game fans in the 90's (with games like Starcraft and Unreal Tournament), but they all went to consoles and never looked back. I'm the only one out of my group of friends with a Steam account it seems.

I tried to get into PC gaming over a decade ago and it was a huge pain in the ass.

There have been significant strides to make PC gaming more accessible and it is paying off.  Whether credit goes to Valve, Blizzard, PC component manufacturers (updating drivers aren't like pounding nails through your dick anymore), PC gaming is now a real good alternative, especially now as consoles are degrading into gimmicks and dudebro cover shooters.

Definitely not my experience. At the end of the PS2 era, the only platform that got more shelf space in stores here than PC was the PS2. It was in a far worse position in the North-American market than in other markets from what I can tell. That said, I am incredibly happy with Steam, it's made PC gaming much less of a hassle, to the point where I consider using my Xbox 360 to be far more of a hassle than gaming on my PC.

(AKA: Jack shit. Steam on Linux will be dead in the water just like Mac OS X's ported Steam was. It may get some Valve ports (Yay, Portal 1/2, L4D 1/2, TF2 native on Linux) but after that? Nada. No one will publish their shit on those platforms because it requires work and gawwwwwd we can't put money into diversifying and maybe expanding a niche market to make that money back.

Serious question: What console games? I'm wanting to know what you're considering as Valve's part in the console to PC porting process that isn't simply publishers putting some work in to the port process to where the end result isn't ass.

that's basically it. they created an environment for a lot of developers to give a shit about who otherwise mightn't. The steam system is easy to sell through, low cost in terms of maintenance, strong consumer-base, etc. Five years from now, THQ stands to make money on Darksiders far longer on steam than xbox for instance.

So, Valve's store system is what you consider them contributing. Okay. I respectively disagree but I can see your point.

I don't think Valve's contributed ANYTHING toward that front because it's the third parties/developers themselves that have to put in the work for people to buy those games 5-10 years down the line/good port over bad ports.

Then again, I wouldn't underestimate the people that buy crap ports (see: FF7 PC re-release thread) years later simply because it's on PC. *shrug*

I definitely agree on Linux, but is OS X Steam dead in the water? According to Steam, I own 70 OS X compatible games, including solid titles like Assassin's Creed 2/Brotherhood (and basically every other recent Ubi title), Football Manager 2012, Crusader Kings II, Civilization IV/V and the Witcher. Now obviously, it's still really shit in comparison to Windows titles, and ports can take some time to arrive, and that's not going to change all that much. However, I would hesitate to compare it to what Linux is going to do. Even just reaching the ~5% of the Steam userbase the different OS X versions have together seems like an impossible goal for Linux.

That is because most people who say that are total knobs.

There was a thread written a few years ago about a guy who flew to Japan and was too scared to leave the airport.  Naturally, one of the first things you do in that situation is to create a thread about it on GAF.  Also, a lot of the "I want to visit Japan" threads inevitably devolve into which clubs have the easiest women.

you're ignoring that fact that people buy, port and develop more games on pc now because steam exists.  before steam pc games were given tiny sections in stores because no one fucking bought them anymore.  ports were shit quality, if they even came out at all, because it didn't matter since sales were usually low.  valve and blizzard were considered crazy because they didn't make ports a priority or even do them in blizzards case.  in the years since steam has been released pc gaming has boomed because now people have a dependable way to browse and buy loads of pc games beyond whatever shit is collecting dust at the local kmart.  they have great sales with huge discounts and lots of promotion to get people to buy all sorts of games that would be ignored by larger retail outlets with limited space.  and they've also helped considerably with the indie game scene by pushing tons of low-budget titles that would die in internet obscurity otherwise as they struggled for coverage on large-scale websites and message boards.

tldr - people buy computer games now because steam

So it's been what...three days since you flew all this way and spent all this money on plane tickets/hotel fees, and you haven't even gone outside yet?

1. Get the hell out of there. Go walk around the hotel area if anything.
2. Go into Tokyo. It's EASY.
3. Go to a POST OFFICE AND WITHDRAW MONEY. It's also easy. I was even able to use my ATM card from the USA when I did it.
4. Have a good time! Seriously, don't be afraid to get out...you came all this way; go and see what this country has to offer. Just remember that:

-the trains don't run all night, so when you do go out, it might be a good idea to find out
when the last train leaves for your station.

-The post office isn't open all the time and is closed on weekends, so make sure you get plenty of cash to tide you over.

5. If it's not too hard, I would recommend changing hotels and getting one inside Tokyo. I'd reccomend Toyoko Inn if you want something cheap and nice.

This is related to the PC thing from the last page.  (sorry if it sounds off-topic now).  I think it's weird that Valve often gets sole credit for lifting up PC gaming, although Steam has cut away the bullshit associated with PC gaming.  Forget manually downloading patches.  Forget keeping the CD in the drive (until you downloaded the no cd cracks).  And people dump on Microsoft but xinput and standardized 360 controller support has been huge in recent years.  You plug it in and it works.  The controller icons show up on screen and everything.  Before that using a gamepad on PC sucked.  If the game supported it, some didn't, like Beyond Good and Evil, it'd never feel as right as on the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube.  Everything is so easy and awesome now.  On the hardware side, too.  Parts pop in and out like legos.

In everywhere in this world there are things we didn't know or hear about and we live a very long time without knowing what the future hold for us or what did our ancestors did and sacrifice for us... is there anyone conspiring to destroy and eliminate us? if we were happy will our happiness last forever? does those who love us from the outside also love us from the inside? Am I right? are everyone planning for better future for this earth? why did you save me then?... if you were willing to die for the ones you love, are you willing to kill for them too?

I had a dream was it a memory from the future or a fault image from the past?

This is an actual intro for a gaming thread.

Mental illness is a real thing that shouldn't be taken lightly, but the attention whoring isn't healthy either.
