I agree, RROD kept me from playing games I wanted to play, while this just necessitated a phone call.

yup. i'd be pretty pissed if i ever played games on my ps3

On a sales basis this won't have any long term effects. In other words Sony will still continue to do well in other parts of the world and be steadily in third place in the US.

I just liking kicking Sony fans because they tend to be an annoying fan base and events like this tend to show why.

This doesn't really have anything to do with playing games online. It's more related to digital distribution and sony security. The credit card info is there to purchase movies, music, games, psn, etc.

Online gaming being shut down is just a by-product of the security breach.

wow, this is a first. I just booted up my Xbox and it says my profile is invalid and I have to recover my gtag. I had recovered it at my dad's where I was house sitting and I've come home to my crusty old shitbox and I get this.

I'm totally fine with this 30 minute process, as I should be doing homework anyway. Thanks MS for putting me on the right track.

Get a USB stick and keep your profile on it.

If you use "Recover," you are risking losing compatibility with your existing save data files. When you "recover" your Gamertag, the system has to know how to consider the new file valid and invalidates the old one. This ostensibly prevents multiple people from using the same GamerTag simultaneously, though in theory you could have someone maintain the original GamerTag and just play offline consistently.

Anyway, hope there weren't too many games with incomplete progress on your profile.

To be fair if the details have been leaked already and the service isn't online there's absolutely 0 point in resetting your password. It's other things you use with the same password you should be worried about.

Fuck all the fanboy bullshit and general joking around but I don't feel comfortable buying Sony products anymore. You know, maybe this is a one-off but this colossal fuck up (that I hope more report on) and a long list of other complaints I have with the way they handle the PS3 and PSP makes me very skeptical of anything else they put out.

Everybody has their individual line in the sand about whether they buy a product from a certain company and its generally based on prior experience with that company. My brother won't buy another MS console he claims because his original xbox and his 360 died on him. (It was under warranty so it got replaced but he eventually gave it to his son). I thought he was over-reacting a bit but then its his right as a consumer.

This PS3 thing while hugely embarrassing and showing some incompetence on Sony's side wouldn't personally stop me from buying Playstation products or consoles mainly because I think the odds of being hurt by this are so crazy low. In other words I'm much more likely to not buy playstation products based on them having a crappy online service in general and launching at too high a price rather than a security breach.

Also Obligatory
