This is the funiest and most sad thing to see happen to a company. At least with the wii there was a glimmer of hope before it came out it would mean something for the hardcore. this is appaling.

This thread ::)

Real talk: Assuming this thing is comfortable in the hands and will get a steady stream of multiplatform, I'm gonna be there day 1. Gimmicks aside, it's a better system technically, and it doesn't matter whether this thing is a stop-gap before "true next" or not, because I'm rich.

My biggest gripes are the name, lack of grips on the controller, and going with sliders over sticks.

Do we know any of the following?

-release date (even window?)
-price
-price of extra controllers
-confirmed games

Everything I've read so far has been really vague... I haven't had time to watch the presser (work all day) and don't want to wade through the thread or all of the internets to figure this shit out.

There are a few confirmed 1st party and 3rd party games. I highly doubt this thing is gonna be released before E3 2012, so people should look forward to those questions being answered by then. Among other things that Nintendo can (and will likely) fuck up are the OS and online implantation.

Releasing in the second half of 2012
no
no
Darksiders 2, Assassin's Creed: Something, Batman Arkham City, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge, Grand Theft Lego, Aliens Colonial Marines, New Super Mario Bros Mii, Tekken, Metro 2033 2

It's basically just a third HD console. It'll get all the third party games that come out for PS3 and 360.

This is like the Pacman Vs e3.

No mulit-touch and can only handle one wii u controller per console are mistakes by Nintendo. Whatever idea they think is so great to trot it out three generations in a row, that idea would be a lot more if you could allow muliti-touch and mulitple screen-controllers. Right now, its just Pacman VS HD. It's limited and the idea has been around for 9 years and hasn't advanced at all.

I can't tell if Arvie is defending this or not.

Not really.  It will be a shitty console, no one will do anything cool with the controller and I'll only play nintendo games on it.  That said people seem to expect more than what they got this e3 and are over reacting on a console a year and a half away.

I wasn't hyped for it. I thought everything sounded like ideas that nobody took advantage of before and that it was basically a Wii for dudebro ports. Devs are excited they might be able to tap into the separate Wii audience.

I'm just surprised they had no actual games to show when it is only a year away.

Not confirmed, but a lot of info seems to imply it.  Most obvious is how Nintendo hasn't sold it as "Utopian split screen!"  I mean, it literally presented 'turn your back to the TV while three others play with wii remotes!' as a control option.

Let's look on the bright side:

I think the console is OK and it's obvious Nintendo is going after hardcore gamers, but if you already own a 360 there wasn't anything at all in the third-party reel to entice.  And while I think the controller is an OK idea, the usage examples they showed were not very interesting at all.

finally we can play nintendo games at sane resolutions with detailed textures and special effects and evolved standard controls, this is a triumph unto itself

perhaps they have finally learned that innovation in gaming has nothing to do with the control mechanism and to quit chasing idiotic "immersion" fantasies that have nothing but novelty implementations*. innovation in gaming is a function for which hardware power (processing plus working memory) is the primary parameter

If you build it, Dudbros will cum

Sorry Nintendo, you're a few years late. This will probably sell well for awhile, and the ability to play Nintendo rehashes+quality third party ports will be a selling point for some folk. But what will this console look like a year after release, when we know more about the 360/PS3 successors. I have a feeling this will be another Gamecube-esque graveyard console

yeah, the concepts seem cool.  even this basic map on the controller screen is neat (ignoring the action game):

that stuff is neat.  iPad 2 is already doing similar things.  How nintendo is handling it is the problem.

I think the biggest thing here is that Nintendo has finally embraced HD - not some 540p or some dumbass proprietary resolution format, Wii U supports 1080p with HDMI.  For a company that for several years tried to pretend that HD was just an unnecessary fad, this is a big step in the right direction.  Not to mention that a tablet-controller is one of the least gimmicky things from a company who has spent almost a decade putting gimmickry ahead of everything else.

After reading more about it I'm not as negative as I was initially, controller sounds good, really ergonomic according to previews so that's a plus as initially I thought it looked really cumbersome. Though apparently it's range is the same or similar too the Wiimote which is kinda disappointing, but tbh I fully expected that. Have you played with it yet Sho Nuff? Is there anything to play on it on the show floor?

Quote from: Nuff in E3 thread

Yeah, I'm actually coming around to it myself.  As someone that completely skipped the Wii entirely, the Wii U looks like the Nintendo console that'll bring me back.  I'm still concerned about storage on this thing though and Nintendo's shitty online history doesn't give me a lot of confidence but at least they'll be getting 3rd party games that are actually of THIS generation.  Speaking of which, I don't know why the fuck that trailer of 3rd party games they were showing off was supposed to get us pumped up for ports of games that'll be a year old by the time system releases.  I mean it's cool that the system can handle it and all but is anyone really going to give a flying fuck about stuff like Darksiders 2 in the fall of 2012?

Will Darksiders 2 even come out for the Wii U?  It seems like there's always a huge list of launch or near launch titles for major consoles that never materialize.  I think a lot of these year old Wii U ports will fall into that category.

Having said that, I do think third parties will embrace the Wii U for at least a couple of years, just because of game budgets and the fact that it is a stopgap machine in reality.  It'll handle the current generation stuff and some of the earlier next generation titles.  Hell, if developers want to control game budgets, third parties may end up being a little more supportive of Wii U vs. Wii.  Given the touch screen, a lot of the latest iShit apps will probably make it to the system.

Well, Darksiders 2 is a 2012 title, probably sometime during the summer. So it's not a huge stretch or anything to imagine that it will launch on everything else at least within a few months of the WiiU launch.

yeah, I just see multitouch as unnecessary, better core hardware for the console base is where the money should be focused imo. Also i imagine it's a resistive touchscreen for durability. Creating a capacitive multitouch screen that's durable costs a bit, this machine is all about cost cutting

Probably.

At this point, does anyone [outside of the nintards who will go crazy over anything] actually that excited about Pikmin 3? I mean, maybe if this was 2007 and we all still thought the Wii had a lot of potential, but now? Really? The boat's sailed, gamers don't care about Nintendo anymore and it'll take more than Pikmin 3 maybe coming out sometime within the next decade to change that.
