hopefully Sony creates a great exploitable PS2 emulator for it.  PS1 emulation on the PSP would still be poor if not for Sony's assistance.

It probably isn't worth implementing when the game will probably sell 15,000 copies at most.

I didn't realize the sequel to 999 is out on the 16th of Feb.  This is now the best system launch for sure, for my tastes personally.  Picking up at US launch week: Tales of Innocence-R, Good People Die, Hot Shots Golf, Uncharted, Lumines, Virtua Tennis 4, Wipeout, Shinobido 2.  So much quality; should last me for most of 2012 until Ys4 JP and Gravity Daze US hit.  Sony's bought themselves a year to start getting the next set of titles-worth-buying for me.

Apparently Akai Katana Vita doesn't exist: http://cave-game.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/2012/01/post-9c40.html

Quote from: EOJ
This game doesn't exist, it's the result of a shitty translation or a completely clueless reporter from that website. Asada says someone asked him about the game today and he was shocked, saying that's the first he's heard of it. He says it's due to some misunderstanding. The game isn't in development, nor has it ever been planned to be in development.

Moral of the story: if a rumor sounds weird, and it's from a site that doesn't know anything about Cave games, it's probably not true.
http://www.cave-stg.com/forum/index.php?topic=1502.msg27968#msg27968

Or perhaps it was one of the games they've recently halted development on and chalking it up as a mistranslation is an easy way to sweep it under the rug. ;)

Oh well, good news for me. Now I can wait longer before getting a Vita.

Shinobido 2 demo is up on PSN.

Pretty underwhelming...doesn't seem much different than the original game.  Has camera problems and clunky control.  Will still get it though.

I only played a bit of the original on PS2 and messed around with the expansion.  I did play a lot of the PSP version.

Maybe the demo is an old build, but I expect more from a sequel released what....5-6 years later?

Well, look at the competition (Tenchu), which has only 1 "different" game in the last 5-6 years (the Wii one).  These stealth ninja games don't seem to change much.

Honestly I was waiting for the Vita version.  My HDTV isn't the greatest and the game would probably look way better on the Vita screen, but $20 is a nice price.  I own two copies of Bionic Commando, so I have no problem buying this twice too.

The last crop of Tenchu action games were made by a different developer, K2.  Acquire's Tenchu 4 (which is awesome and you should try the superior PSP version) is a completely different type of stealth game, with much less focus on combat.  Shinobido 2 just doesn't feel different than Shinobido 1 in pretty much every area.  But like I said, I'm gonna get it anyway.  Just makes me glad I didn't pay extra to import it.

Acquire has been reasonably busy, and the Shinobido 2 thing might have been the result of a popularity poll.  The circumstances around its creation are like whatever, but I'm stoked for it.  It's the only Vita game I'm buying (and why I'm getting it day one).

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-20-is-the-playstation-vita-worth-230

Quote
What a difference six months makes. In June last year Sony boss Kaz Hirai proudly took to the stage at E3 to announce that the Vita would retail for $250 (or $299 for the 3G version) - a figure that was generally greeted with enthusiasm by both press and gamers alike. Meanwhile, the considerably less powerful 3DS was floundering at around the same price, just a few months after its launch.

Fast forward to January 2012 and the 3DS is flying off shelves following an unprecedented pricing rethink while the Vita has got off to a miserable start in Japan, with numerous internet commentators already starting their 'cut the price' catcalls.

So, one month ahead of the machine's global launch, we've enlisted the help of technical intelligence experts UBM TechInsights and taken a screwdriver to Sony's new portable in an attempt to divine two things - whether you're getting good value for money, and whether Sony has left itself any room for an emergency price drop should the Western launch belly-flop.

UBM's VP of business intelligence, Jeffrey Brown, tells us that the total bill of materials for the 3G-enabled version of the system comes in at an estimated $159.10 - that's around Ł102.90. That figure breaks down as follows:

Display and touchscreens: $50
Battery: $3.60
Cameras: $3.50
Wi-Fi/BT/GPS: $3.50
NAND: $6.00
SDRAM: $9.25
Processor: $16.00
BB+XCR: $16.25
Non-electronic: $11.00
Other: $30.00
Supporting materials: $10.00

For more on UBM's findings, head on over to its official site.

$160 for 3G,hmm

Of course this doesn't include manufacturing costs, licencing, distribution, retailers,R&D.The real question would be:How much money Sony needs to pay right now to get Vita into consumer hands?

Assuming this is true,$140 is a nice sum to play with.

R&D and marketing can be counted when Vita goes the way of the Dodo.

Fun fact from gaf, poster seems reliable

For good and bad, Vita replicates the home console experience. Clunky kitchen-sink OS, huge-ass system updates, overblown games, silly load times. Combining the mandatory system updates, reboots, game updates, intro movie/load screen/Welcome to the wonderful World of Wipeout! bullshit (touch screen to continue! now touch START to continue! now touch CONTINUE to continue!), it was about 20 mins from inserting cart to starting a race in Wipeout.

In game, it is fucking incredible so I can understand why the fans forgive all the other bullshit. But it IS bullshit. This is patently not something you can pick up and play, unless you load a race, then put the system in sleep mode until you are ready to play. If I'd started that process on my (former) morning commute, I'd have reached the office by the time the race started.

Also, the learning curve is a joke. I was ripping through it, thinking, whoa, this is a Wipeout game I can actually approach!

Then I hit one race where I was in 8th place for the whole race 4 times in a row. Turned it off, may never play again. Call me a weaksauce loser newb if you must - I need some kind of feedback as to what I'm doing wrong or right to bother continuing. I have no clue how I'm supposed to get better at this game. I have no idea what happened between the races I was winning first try, and this one that I can't get out of 8th.

For a home console it's tolerable, since you can just go and make a sandwitch. But for a handheld it's unforgivable, they exist for quick play.

One thing I've not seen mentioned, how are the load times off the cards?

The process i'm talking about is all spelled out above DC, but I guess I knew someone would misread it and overreact.

No, I have no clue how to 'barrel roll boost', and the game doesn't seem to want to tell me. It does tell me to do things like 'Pick up power-ups!' though, thanks!

(yes pilonv, this has been my experience with other Wipeouts too but what can you do, there are no fucking games for this thing yet, we're all going to be buying some crap we don't really want to...)

lol what? the load times are long but they aren't -that- long. It's about 48 seconds per track. That's poor in terms of performance, throw in clunky interface tax (is it that bad?) and we're talking 1m 20 or so. I don't recall how bad the very first start up is as i was too busy throwing filthy man milt all inside my shorts.

They feel -that- long.  The game is awesome and this doesn't deter me from wanting to play it, but Wipeout's load times are ridiculous.

I see the Vita's load times in general getting shat all over once the system gets released in North America and Europe...the system may be using carts, but they still have UMD load times.

How's the load times in Ridge Racer, BTW?  Did Namco at least not fuck that part up?

Sorry for sounding smug, I feel your pain because that's basically my experience with every Wipeout I've played.

game carts and mem cart load times are pretty much identical - i've seen people mention that the game carts are faster but i think we're talking by microseconds or something.

Cheers, I didn't think it would be that much. Any difference from 3DS loading?

thanks for the tips DC.

I'm really not opposed to LEARNING how to play Wipeout...since I can enjoy Forza 2 sans assists and so on, I'm sure it will eventually give way to my awesomeness. It's pretty stupid of them not to build in a sensible learning curve with staggered introductions of the various techniques though. Why exactly can't I just have fun whizzing around a gorgeous environment if I want to, straight out of the box? (i.e. there should be a Quick Race option that I can set to girly difficulty until I'm ready for the serious rodgering)

Also, the Wipeout load times feel super-long in part because they included a %-based counter. Watching that thing tick up is infuriating.

And every time I retry a race, it whizzes up then gets stuck on 94% :lol JUST TO FUCK WITH ME.

time for some rumor

Quote
According to the latest issue of UK-based gaming publication PLAY, two brand new exclusive PS3 titles are gearing up for a full-blown reveal in February. Both Syphon Filter 4 and God of War IV are said to be deep in development, and will get a full announcement next month. In the “10 Games That Will Be Announced This Year” feature, PLAY states that the long-rumored Syphon Filter 4 is currently in development at SCE London Studio, with the espionage title pegged for a Winter 2012 release.

“As far as our spies tell us, Syphon Filter 4 will be announced and released during 2012 – they’re not often wrong either. Developed by SCE London Studio (once thought to be Sony Bend), it will see a return to the world of shooting, espionage and Gabe Logan’s superb name.”

Amazing,Sony announcing PS3 games around Vita launch.

Not that I have any hopes for Vita in the West but really lol--might as well announce it one week before Vita launch for maximum damage

if true of course

so the variable pricing might just be for the two higher prices.  seems like it's just $40 and $50, as Wipeout's msrp is now $40, though you can preorder and lock in the $30 price at Amazon.

I don't know if I should since I still haven't played Fury

Although the port doesn't look all that exciting. I'm sure there will be flaws - resolution doesn't look great for a start.

Little Deviants bundle now seems like a total ripoff in comparison.  You're literally paying $50 just to have it 1 week early.  I wonder if we'll see more hardware manufacturers use this in the future "GET SYSTEM ONE WEEK EARLY IF YOU PAY US $$$$"

/paying $50 to get it one week earlier :(

are there any games out there that'll use the GPS in any meaningful way though? that's the only advantage the 3G one has over the vanilla units afaik

I can't say anything about paying $50 to get it early when I paid way more than that to import one.   :lol

FIFA on the Vita uses the rear touch pad to aim your shots where you want it. It's 1:1 to a goal, so if you hit the rear touch in the right corner you'll shoot it in the right corner.

that blows my mind. sounds amazing.

Is there anywhere that lists what the price of a given game will be on PSN before release? I have pre-ordered Sigma from amazon but I guess i'd prefer to have it on the system at all times...but no idea what the price differential might be.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-06-psn-accounts-renamed-sony-entertainment-network-accounts-tomorrow

Quote
Update: It's not just PlayStation Network accounts that will be renamed - the entire PSN platform will become Sony Entertainment Network, Sony has explained to Eurogamer.

A Sony spokesperson said being called SEN will help make it "clearer and easier" for people to associate the service with "all Sony products" and use one log-in.
