OPM2 Japanese version is on sale at P-A for $45 today.  Looks like more gomu gomu punch in my future.

http://www.play-asia.com/One_Piece_Kaizoku_Musou_2_Japanese_Version/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-70-5waj.html

Nice!  Guess it wouldn't have mattered if I wanted, since I used a 25% off coupon before.  Both would be around $60 with Fedex shipping.

I think the PS3 version has more framerate issues than the Vita version, however.  Be prepared for some pretty bad spots on some levels.  Other than that, the game is top-notch.

Yeah, played a bit of OPM2 and it's fun!  Feels like a real musou game.  Lots of character, collectibles, moves, big battlefields, 1000+ kills easy, grinding grinding grinding.  Didn't play much of the first because it wasn't too good, but can see myself enjoying this one.

Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate (following WO3, WO3 Special on PSP, and WO3 Hyper on Wii U) has been announced for PS3 and Vita.  They may be milking the hell out of this game, but I will definitely pick this up.  No word on whether or not it's going to come out in English.

Update: In addition to Tamomo-no-Mae, Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate will be getting the expert swordsman Xu Shu from the Dynasty Warriors series. Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate will also have a brand new story. Additionally, the game will be adding new elements that were seen in the PSP and Wii U versions, both of which were released a good while after the original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version.

It's more than just a straight port...nice!  So that's two more characters in addition to the ones that were added in Special and Hyper.

Never played Dynasty Warriors, what's making 8 so much better than the others?

The only musou game I've played was Fist of the North Star which was mildly entertaining, but really repetitive.

From what I've read, DW8 has stuff other musou games have never even had before, like being able to play maps from the enemy side's perspective and a faster/smoother battle system, so yeah, I'm sticking with that claim.  I've actually never been hyped for a Dynasty Warriors game before and usually enjoy all the other musou games more.  This one is different.

Does anyone know if the strategy layer makes a return in this one?  I felt it was largely missing from 7.  5 was the last one where I felt I had real control over the outcome of the stages and who lived or died in story mode.

IIRC so does 7.

I'm talking about not being locked out of entire sections of the map because "story", having full control of the battlefield from the beginning.  Being able to alter the flow of the stage by fulfilling certain sub objectives, or not fulfilling them.  Like maybe my fire attack at chi bi fails or something.  All that was possible in 5 and 6.

7 doesn't have a morale bar. It has morale but it's under the hood and is inconsequential to the gameplay.

And yeah, 7 was really poor at that. 7 in general has really bad replay value.

TBH everything you're describing sounds like Samurai Warriors and not Dynasty Warriors (at least in its modern incarnation) Pancakes. Everything you listed is why I prefer SW.

Samurai Warriors has the "pop up events", but that's different from what I'm talking about.

Back to the chi bi example.  The fire attack in 5 and 6 would fail if you let Huang Gai die, so it was to your advantage not to let him.  But in 7, they game puts you in control of Huang gai for that segment and you have no choice but to win in that one particular way.  Playing from the other side, your job was to kill him, preventing the attack, but there was no "play from the other side" in 7.  That scenario was just not possible, Wei got different stages.

The removal of this aspect made the game a lot more Sengoku Basara and a lot less Dynasty Warriors.

Yeah I did. There was a 464kb thing to snag before starting but I don't think it was any fix or anything significant. There's definitely some death of the frame rate here and there and it is noticeable and bothersome but I've yet to experience anything as bad as what's shown in that video.

ATELIER MUSOU INCOMING!   :o

 :lol

Dynasty Warriors 8: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK this game is some good shit. They really ramped up the style/animations and made everyone flashier and more fun to use. The engine is built on what was used in DW7, but the game plays so much more smoothly and there's tons and tons of enemies on screen coming at you now. I also like that there's way more enemy officers/generals coming at you instead of too many generic grunts. Level design is better too.

I can see why people say this is the best Dynasty Warriors since DW3. They nailed it with this one.  The only real complaint I have is that the framerate could be better, but it's more consistent compared to DW7.

Started playing as Liu Bei in story mode.  He's OK, but I prefer Zhao Yun when he's available for use.  The spear attack animations are sick now.  Lots of attention to detail; love the way it bends.

I would probably buy an Atelier Musou and the only similar games I've ever enjoyed were Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War and Kessen II. Then again I've mostly played demos and I imagine RPG mechanics are a lot more fun in the full versions.

1. Beat the shit out of dudes
2. Beat the shit out of generals
3. Run away from Lu Bu
4. Run to a spot on the map when notified
5. Repeat

The real strategy is trying to figure out what needs to be done to have certain allies survive battles.  Too early for me to tell what to do yet!
