I'm looking forward to seeing DOA5. I still think that that is the series Hayashi should be focusing on, since there is a hell of a lot more room for improvement compared to NG (which he has already proven to be incompetent toward).

Dead or Alive > Mortal Kombat, Tekken, a whole buncha shit

Dead or Alive's biggest asset is it stage design. It has THE best stage design out of any 3d fighter and natural fluidity that games like Tekken and Mortal Kombat just flat out lack.

I loved the multi-tiered stages in VF3, I thought that was fucking awesome. Then all the VF players were like "DURR I WANT TO FIGHT IN A SQUARE" and DOA took over and made shit even more bonkers.

The undulating and sloping stages were definitely cool and innovative at the time, but they ultimately proved to have a nasty effect on the balancing; certain stages dramatically favoring characters with lots of juggle options on a particular player side; dropping combos because of the ground level -- that sort of thing.  Flat and square is boring, but fair.  That's essentially AM2's post-VF3 philosophy in a nutshell.

And so instead of working to improve/balance this, AM2 just went back to VF2.   :-\

I'm glad they did.  VF4/5 fits a specific niche of technicality, precision and no-bullshit.  Randomness isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there's a place for it elsewhere.

This is the problem.  It doesn't have to be "randomness."  They didn't even try to work on it in an update or sequel.

It's definitely true that they simply rolled it back, but it's inevitable that any variations in the stages will potentially effect different characters in different ways; even the size of the ring, which does vary in VF4/5, can amount to a potential advantage for particular characters.

I think not making it a factor AT ALL was the right direction for that particular series.

I disagree. I always considered the ring just as much a strategic point as countering and blocking in VF. Ring expansion is clearly the next step up for me.

The difference is you have direct control over that stuff, whereas the stage is typically chosen by one person, and not necessarily even randomly.

No, I mean, you're right; it's just a matter of philosophy, really, that I'm glad a particular series exists to encompass and differentiate itself with.  If you proposed that if you put Tekken/DOA stages with minimal sloping in VF5 that it would have no effect on the outcome of a match 98% of the time, I would have to agree with that, but in theory, the potential for an unearned advantage remains.

Anyone who argues for flashy bullshit in the stages to get in the way and look "pretty" obviously doesn't understand competitive fighting games.  DOA will never really be a "serious" fighter, so they can throw whatever they want and it'll still be fun.  For a game like VF or Tekken which has a very strong competitive scene, the key is to make things balanced as possible.  It's hard enough to keep the characters balanced on a flat plane without worrying about stupid shit getting in the way.  All of that shit really hurt Tekken 4 and VF3, they were the lowest point in the series and much less popular than other releases.  I'd say the way that Tekken does it is pretty good, either having stages with walls or without them, adding to the variety and risk of getting a stage design that's favorable to your matchup, but still being a fairly uniform design so that you don't have to develop a strategy for every single stage pattern and worrying about getting the one stage that unfairly changes the matchup.

Hayashi says the neckwear was a gift from a fan, and he wore it at the show today to reference the return of NES Ninja Gaiden writer Masato Kato to the franchise, since Kato is back working on Ninja Gaiden 3. Kato is perhaps best known for writing SNES classic Chrono Trigger, and he's not the only NES throwback in NG3, since the new game also brings back movements like wall climbing from the old days.

Impress pressed further and asked if as the series' father it feels a bit odd to see the series be continued on without him. Itagaki replied that while there are some creators like that, he is different. He views Dead or Alive as like having given a daughter off to be married. It would be bad for a father to always be protective of his daughter. He can only hope that she is given happiness.

I don't care what you folks have to say about MGS4 as a game, but the fact that it shows up in a thread about games that have almost nothing to do with it speaks to its influence.

That said, all I really liked about MGS4 was the improvements it made to the controls and systems of the third game, all of which are thrown out the window about halfway through the game in favor of cinematics. It's been said before; MGS4:VR Missions would be sooo good :(

Quote
"For Ninja Gaiden 3," Hayashi told me, "we wanted to focus on the act of cutting someone down, and what it's like to actually kill someone with a sword. Once you start lopping off limbs, your enemy goes from being a living thing that you're killing to just a thing."

And to hammer the point home (or katana the point home, if you prefer) that these are real human beings you're flipping out and killing, he continued. "When you're actually cutting into a person, and you feel them getting scared, and the blood is spraying right on you, you hear their dying breaths in your ear -- that's the kind of visceral violence we're going for in Ninja Gaiden 3." In the demo level I played, by the way, the enemy soldiers start pleading for their lives as soon as you begin attacking them.

At this point you might think, as I did, that you're going to start feeling guilty about cutting into all these bodies. That's ... kind of the idea. "Ryu Hayabusa is a dark hero," Hayashi explained. "If people want to take the easy way out or a cleaner way out -- not killing people -- that's not what the story is about and what Ryu Hayabusa is about. To be a dark hero, you have to do bad things in order to do good."

This isn't Ninja Guyver ffs.

I'm starting to think that Hayashi has never played any iteration of Ninja Gaiden, including his own. Maybe he was the janitor at Team Ninja's HQ, and Itagaki named him his successor as his final act of vengeance against Tecmo.

Kane and Lynch did a good job of making you feel like a horrible monster, I guess.  It kind of worked since you knew that you were playing as evil people.  You would just go on a rampage and hear people pleading with you about how they have a family back home and etc...

Somehow I don't see Ninja Gaiden as a series which needs this layer of depth in combat.
