The game itself is pretty fun, but the PC is big 'ol pile of WTF.

-Lots of random crashes
-Freezes at save
-Pressing ESC exits the current game and goes back to the main menu [causing you to lose unsaved data]
-Sometimes the textures won't load at all, resulting in a void with a few textures/objects scattered here and there

Really, id? REALLY? This is a mess, I'm stunned that id didn't know about this [or did know and released it anyway]. DEAD ISLAND wasn't this bad.

I think my main issue is that texture quality seems inconsistent, and im not sure where I get to tweak anything- kinda a take what you get video settings affair which is kinda bummersville

The Giantbomb quick look had a lot of praise for a game that didn't look that great.  the final line was "Call of Duty in Fallout environments" and that kinda knocked the wind out.  I don't know how apt that comparison is, though two people agreed, but I don't like Call of duty single player.

Understandable from your perspective.

For me that actively excites me. Outside of crysis I find open world environments in shooters deathly boring.(even in Crysis sometimes it doesn't work for me depending on the level) I love it in Fallout. Not in a true action game.

I'm still down to play this although I certainly don't view id as masters of modern game design.

Rage isn't really all that open. There are some large environments and exploration, but it's definitely more like the structure of Borderlands than Fallout.

Its nothing like call of duty or fallout.

Lots of action = Call of Duty
Post apocalypse = Fallout

It's Call of Duty in a Fallout environment!

So apparently, the game autodetects all HW. Seems like the HW poller is shoddily written and the game thinks that some cards have 0 MB video mem:

And there are no manual settings to override this... This is the video settings menu for the PC version:

Well, early jitters aside [which were solved by nothing more than the latest NIVIDIA drivers], Rage is really good! I was ready to swear off id, John Carmack, and PC gaming forever last night, but it's all good now that I'm actually getting to play the game. Overall, I think Rage is a case of "big picture" rather than the little details. Meaning, if you really look close there are some things that aren't so hot [individual textures, the texture pop-in, the feel of the guns, the way the vehicles control, ect.], but the overall package works. So, from my 1.5 hours of play, I'm happy with the delivered product.

But all of those games issues add to their charm in a way. Tho, I had no issues with F3 and NV outside of Liberty Prime's A.I. constantly breaking.

Brink, Hunted: The Demons Forge and the PC version of rage just seem fucking BROKEN.

I had very few issues with Oblivion and FO3 (just a couple of crashes for each and some GFWL bullshit where I got stuck in an update loop in FO3), but FO:NV was so broken for me (constant crashing, microstuttering) that it just sapped all my will to keep playing.  I still haven't finished it, maybe I will just start fresh and play through one day now that it's had a dozen patches.  I think everyone has a different bugfest experience when it comes to Bethesda games.

Played for about an hour so far.

It looks very good for a console game for the most part. And the 60 fps feeling is absolutely great. Going from battlefield to this is absolutely a weird sensation. The frame rate is so consistently high it almost feels odd at times simply because the COD games are the only other ones that do it. You can get use to lower frame rates and then when you play a high frame rate game it almost feels not right.

There are parts and lots of them where it absolutely looks like the best game on consoles. There are also parts where you can be standing next to an incredibly shitty looking texture. It has high high's and lots of them. But there are lows. It's more uneven than a lot of games. And part of the reason it is able to get these high frame rates is that most of the shooting is done in linear mostly smallish caves. Fallout size world this is not. There is a large overworld that you drive arounnd in but so far you fight in caves that size wise wouldn't feel out of place in any other shooter. Maybe this changes later though.

So far the weapons feel very good and that along with the high frame rate makes the combat feel very good to me. The enemies are well animated and the AI on them while nothing special gets the job done for this type of shooter. So far I've been running around doing quests and basically the quest will take you to some area where you then got into a dungeon and complete it by killing everything around. You pick up "loot" in the sense that you pick up crap to sell or crap to make other stuff with. Like bullets and shit.

I like it so far but its still early. I could see it getting repetitive if it doesn't mix up the forumla or the pacing much but early on it seems fun enough.

If you went in expecting Fallout or Borderlands, or Stalker I could a person being disappointed. It's not nearly the RPG of any of those games. It's really a pure shooter in a post apocalyptic landscape. So in that sense I get the "it's Call of Duty meets Fallout". Its really neither of those two as it doesn't really go far enough in either direction, but as a shorthand that's probably something I would say.

Still enjoying the game but I'm wondering why is it making me do all these fetch quests for people and why do I need to meet all these boring people and talk to them. This ain't RDR or GTA. These people aren't funny or interesting. I think id was just trying to show they are beyond the no plot days of Doom but this doesn't really work to prove it. They should stick to immersion and mood setting stuff rather than just putting in plot and characters to try to prove they can.

This is like an open world game wanna be that didn't really need to be open world. You could just tell this story in a linear manner

Update on the IntKeys situation

so I got an email about it today.

Basically from what I'm seeing is that the key i bought is the EU release (which is why it is on the 7th). They advised that the only way to actually activate the game is to use an Eastern European VPN. From there the game is region free so it will be fine to play without VPN.

What's funny is that I have to request them to send me the key manually. The other alternative is to email them back with my STEAM username/password and they will activate the game themselves.

That's kind of really shady.
