The first episode of Uchuu Kyodai/Space Brothers was pretty good, it gave me some Planetes vibes and there sure aren't many series that do that.

Season looks the same as any.

So a season with Jormungand, Zetman, a new Watanabe/Kanno collaboration, a slick new Lupin III series, and a realistic look at space flight in the near future really looks the same as all the others recently? :wtf
No Gundamo
No Code Geass season 3
No Darker Than Black season 3
No To Love Ru Darkness

Just another season.

I like Persona 4, but the anime is bland and purposeless, utterly lacking in any kind of identity other than what it derives from being a frame-for-frame retelling of the game. I guess it's okay if you don't want to devote the time to play the game, but if you've played the game already then there's really no reason to watch the anime.

Can't wait for Evol to be in SRW!  I only hope E7 AO is at least as good as Evol.

Started watching Black Lagoon Roberta's Blood Trail since I'm caught up with current shows.  First ep was excellent.  Man, Black Lagoon is such a good show compared to modern anime.  Wish there were more shows of that quality around anymore.  Think I will enjoy this OAV very much and then wait 5 years for them to animate more of the manga.

Black Lagoon is a top 5 anime of the last decade, it's not fair to compare other animes to it's standards. That being said,  RBT is excellent

It's good animu material just not worth the "OVA wait time".

Okay, I have to stop you guys, where do you guys gets this idea of "OVA quality"

Being an OVA is not a measure of animation/drawing quality/depth it just means its direct to DVD releases. (mostly)

Being an OVA is not a measure of animation/drawing quality/depth it just means its direct to DVD releases. (mostly)

TV series = 13-26 episodes shown on TV for free, generally over the course of a few months
OVA series = 3-6 episodes released one at a time on DVD for $30+ each, generally over the course of a year or more

No, OVA is not a measure of animation quality, but the basic idea is that the animators have more time and money to do things better than a tight TV schedule and budget would allow them to do.

OVAs vary just as wildly in quality and length as TV series.

You get short 6 ep TV series as well. I'm just saying call something out for having shit quality, not shit quality for an OVA it doesn't make sense.

No, this really isnt a thing, it's a perception. My young brain may be lying to me but I remember crap like the Hunter x Hunter OVA series being on par, if not regressing in animation quality from the TV series. Assuming a similar budget, quality goes down as series length goes up, be that a TV series or an OVA.

Yeah, OAV used to be for higher budget stuff.  OCCASIONALLY it still is used that way (Gundam Unicorn for instance has much better combat animation than Gundam TV shows; though the non-combat stuff is TV quality or below).

But usually OAV these days is more like "We can't get this on TV because no one will fund it, or it's inappropriate for TV, or we can't afford to do a TV show because it takes us 12 months to animate 30 mins with our team of 15 guys".  I think with Black Lagoon it was more that there wasn't enough material to animate a TV season and the audience for that kind of show has left and been replaced by the moe moe kyuun audience.

The trick with OAV I find is to just not watch it until it's done if you can.  That's what I did for Black Lagoon and so the wait time between eps didn't bother me.  Otoh, since Hellsing eps are years apart I watch them anyhow.

Btw, Himuro's Hellsing OAV > Hellsing TV comment on OAVs having better animation made me chuckle a bit considering the latest Hellsing OAV ep.  I wonder if we'll ever get the last 2 eps.

Hunter X Hunter's were like that because the anime caught up to the manga.  If you compare the old anime to the manga or new anime, there're a lot of addition scenes or scenes that are stretched out.  HXH handled it really well by having filler that adds to the series instead of delaying story progression.  Just look at Dragon Ball Z taking 10 episodes to show Goku charge up or filler arcs from Kenshin, Naruto, or Bleach.  Eventually it hit that point where they had to end the series.  The anime ends in the middle of the yorkshin arc and the first OVA, which is excellent, finishes it up.  The final two dealing with Green Island, is when they rushed the animation and everything dropped in quality.

Kenshin's case is a weird since the first set is essentially a backstory to the final arc, and it was all done in regular Kenshin/children comic style, so overall lighter.  But since that final arc wasn't animated, that backstory was adapted into the darker, more adult oav.  The final arc from the anime was all filler.  The second oav was a really loose adaptation of the final manga arc done in the style of the first oav and it sucked.  And the first oav is really great.  So that whole battosai arc probably ended up better than it would have if the anime hadn't caught up the manga.

these are hunter x hunter spoilers, but just to compare the series to the latter oavs:
