One of my movie groups I'm in was going to see Mamoru Hosoda's new film
"Mirai" in the theater tonight so I made an effort to escape work and see it. I mean hey Girl who Leapt Through Time was pretty good outside that terrible ending and Summer Wars was a ton of fun.
Knew nothing about this, and uhhhhh, this is the most kiddy film I have ever watched as an adult
There are exactly 2 target audiences for this film. 30-something/early 40-something parents & little kids aged 10 and under.
It was alright but as someone not in that target audience it was kinda dull. One of the gals in my group fell asleep lol. Like it has a nice little lesson and the concept of a story about different generations of a FAMILY seen through the eyes of like a 4 year old kid is neat, but the execution is just kinda average. You can definitely tell watching it that the movie was made because Hosoda's a dad with young kids and he wanted to make a movie about being a dad with young kids. There was even a little interview after the movie with Hosoda where he basically said the story is based off him, his kids and his family.
Also the music was strangely disappointing for the type of Ghibli/melodramatic film it is. Not everyone can be Joe Hisaishi or Radwimps I guess.
I guess I'd give it like a B-, but if you're a 30/40 something parent with young kid(s), go see it!
Not sure if anime movies should go in the anime thread so will cross-post this.
