Aren't a lot of the recent Japanese cultural pathologies really due to the shitty economic situation they've been in for the last couple decades? So we can expect the same sort of things to sprout here more and more.

wise beyond her years. god-tier justification

I imagine kids living in a "society has collapsed and you are in constant danger" scenario tend to wise up fast.

And if they were some of the last fertile females on earth, it would be for the good of mankind that you were having sex with them. You'd practically be a hero!

There's some growing disillusionment-- baby boomers told Gen X/Y to "just jump through the undergrad hoop and you're good to go!"  and that's turning out to be so not even close to true.  people who relied on this and didn't see a huge need to be an innovative go getter self starter are getting screwed as a result and told they're lazy.  every degree but medicine and engineering seem to be devalued.

but i hope it doesn't lead to love pillows.  actually, i'd be much more afraid of american pathology in the face of trouble.  prob much more violent than the Japanese.

I am very interested in seeing if The Last of Us is going to be a genuine serious take on the zombie apocalypse genre. There hasn't really been one. I trust Naughty Dog's ability to tell a story, I want to know if they can tell a serious story and not the camp stuff we see in Uncharted.

yeah, this is definitely looking like the last year of games before a new console generation
This gen is kinda crazy long. 360 launched in 2005 and its successor isn't coming until 2013. We've been at the ceiling for what the current machines can do for a while now.

Yeah, it's definitely a console swan song year, games are starting to circle around on themselves. Starhawk, Halo 4, GTAV, etc.  I'm actually looking forward to a new round of consoles, and glad some games (like the next Red Dead) won't come out until then.

I think we'll still be seeing this gen games until 2013, even though new consoles might come out.  PS2 was still kicking it in 2006.

Wii U is probably going to share a lot of games with Vita, while the loop and PS4 move on.

I am very interested in seeing if The Last of Us is going to be a genuine serious take on the zombie apocalypse genre. There hasn't really been one. I trust Naughty Dog's ability to tell a story, I want to know if they can tell a serious story and not the camp stuff we see in Uncharted.

I don't really care much for the story as much as I would for an experiencing somewhat mimicking survival.  I mean, it isn't survival if you're expected to get through it.  If ND tried something interesting with the gameplay, where there wasn't a goal other than survival, maybe had procedural elements, and story was entirely dependent on actions and how characters react, then yeah, it could be great.

I'd be disappointed if it was just "we have to find x to solve y" and it was about a journey.  well not really because that could be cool too.  I just think a game that really embraces survival could be great.  It probably won't be this game, because if the girl or guy die it would be game over and you'll never deal with the consequences.  even simple things, like without a partner you can't carry as many supplies, some places couldn't be accessed alone, some other survivors react differently, etc.  I'm rambling now.

MGS, Alan Wake, Bioshock short clip, ME3 short clip, Last Of Us is a new IP by Naughty Dog that could be cool even if t uses Zombies, Epic's new game is zombie tower defense, Tony Hawk HD remake which is awesome, Hitman!, and that's about it

stubbs the zombie for xbox was pretty cool.  you played a zombie and it was set in the 1950s, but was a comedy game.   kinda like destroy all humans (I think that was the name...the pandemic one where you played an alien)

edit: holy shit there were 4 destroy all humans game? the fuck

it would be cool if it wasn't a scripted sequence.  it's a trope of zombie fiction that's not really handled in games.  the mundane can be vaguely interesting if finding tampons was a dynamic objective.  you have to find the store, plan around the zombies, other survivors, or any environmental hazards.  you're not sure if the survivors are hostile, so you have the choice to start a dialog, or engage them in combat, or use stealth to sneak in unnoticed.  and instead making it unscripted means it's not some scene like "UR BLEEDING R U BIT... oooo :-X," you could be working to get past a blockade, and suddenly "objective: she's periodin" pops up and you gotta adapt.

I'd be down for move support if it had an expanded MGS3 healing system with Trauma Center wii controls.  Waggle to tampon.

Epic's Minecraft/Team Fortress/Zombie/Tower Defence looks shameless but I was rolling my eyes pretty damn hard at the 'has to be a cheap downloadable' comments.  The barest whiff of non-realism and the mouthbreathers decide it can't be full-priced retail.

If the Epic game is actually derivative of proven mechanics and has a good L4Dish procedural thing going then I can see their game being cool. At least the trailer promises a game instead of a po-faced NARRATIVE EXPERIENCE like Aeroshock/Zombie Dog.

Bloody heck that 'Last Of Them' thread has gone interstellar distinguished mentally-challenged fellow the Gif boys are getting lots of use out of them. and the OMG NAUGHTY GODS posting is just  :yuck

I like ND but they deal in spectacle. I don't think they have it in them to have game with little combat and more exploration ala first Tomb Raider i mean how scary was that game when you went ages without coming across any other life. I want every encounter to actually be scary when we come across 'infected' or hostile humans although i do have to ask why if humans are dying out people would happily kill other humans, surely surviving together is more wiser but whatever...

That's because humans are usually worse than the zombies.

Look at a movie like 28 Days Later, or read a novel like The Stand. Humans will eventually make the situation worse than it actually is...

If it weren't for a society and its rules, humans wouldn't be nothing more than just filthy savages.

You're  probably right.

Have a look at how some of us behave when their are half price consumer items on sale. Ready to trample over one another to get the cheap goods. If something cataclysmic did happen on this planet i'd say most people would be killers by the end of the first week.  :(

at the risk of sounding like NAUGHTY GODS :derp

i was legitimately impressed with the Road-esque tone (though the girl is empowered vs. the boy in the road), the fungus zombie, teh graphics, and well, it was all just pretty intriguing, unlike most trailers for all games.  just gotta see that gameplay.  for all we know it's an arena twin stick shooter

more info came out about the Last of US.  firstly, they say it's not going to about the zombies, but the relationship between Juno and the guy.  Which sounds like they're going to stray from a 'finding a cure' plot.

also, Gustavo Santaolalla is doing the music

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-12-13-the-last-of-us-scored-by-oscar-winner-gustavo-santaolalla

(wondering if this should just be changed to a Last of Us thread, or just make a separate thread)

Quote
Like the Uncharted games, The Last of Us has a third-person perspective, in which you see the character on-screen, but it has a more realistic, cinematic look. "We're trying to move the medium of video games into an area elevated in the same manner of respect of film," Balestra says. "We want to redefine what our medium is even called. 'Video game' is not an accurate name anymore. It is not necessarily a game with rules and a winner and a loser. It's an experience."

That quote sounds bad but reading it optimistically, maybe he means it doesn't have a linear progression, like beginning to end, but a prolonged experience.  The story comes from the gameplay, in that your interactions with the other character drives it forward.  Making a game that tells a story unique to video games, instead of aping cinema.  And because it's about survival, you can't win or lose, because dying or living on are both equally valid 'endings' to your experience; dying isn't game over with continues but a diegetic concept.  Emergent, non euclidean, procedural, other buzz words.  The Last of Us will be a BBC in gaming's sea of limp white penisi.  By denying this game its due credit, you're basically justifying slavery of your prefrontal cortex.

the thing that's annoying about that quote is that it's still obviously going to be a game.  He's just talking about covering up the game aspects, but he's using the douchiest language possible.  One way to do this is with autoplatforming.  But you can't gloss over the fact that zombies eating your head = death and reload screen.  by "cinematic," they mean ellen page will yell "Leon Noooooooo!" when you die and probably over 9000 hours of cutscenes/QTE sequences.

yep, there's just no way to "un-game" a section where you have control, except to make it arbitrarily finicky and against the logic of the  person in control.  Except, you know, to make it a movie.

hey waitaminute...why don't these fucks just make "gritty, mature" Pixar movies?!   (also, loved Jeff Keighley's generic use of gritty and mature to describe this game.)  Come to think of it "Why don't devs of cinematic games just make animated movies?" might be a fun topic on gaf...one of you unbanned folks should do that (curseofthegods)  be sure to say it's in response to Naughty Dog's quotes for extra joy.
