Disappointing if true. I was hoping at least 660Ti level. I guess you can't expect much from a $300 console.

Consoles really have 2x the performance of a PC with similar specs?

So, what would be the equivalent pc accounting for the additional overhead on a windows systems? Is it possible to compare a pc and durango with this leaked specs (if they're true after all)?

IIRC CliffyB said you need 2x the power on the PC taking the overhead into conisderation, so give or take a 2.5 TFLOP GPU.

GTX 670 has 2.4 TFLOPS.
GTX 680 has 3.0 TFLOPS.

Game, set, match dirty poor consoles.

Seems like it'll be cheaper to just buy a GTX 680 than to invest in a next gen console + games + accessories.

and you get more tflops

I'm getting confused by all the tflops talk. Seems like some older cards like a 5870 already had tflops of around 2.7 tflops. Are those flops numbers only comparable if the featuresets of the cards are similar?

Cell = 230 GFlops
RSX = 400 GFlops(around 360GFlops if clock is 500)
Sony PR PS3 number = 2 TFlops

Xenos = 240 GFlops
Xenon = around 100 GFlops
MS PR 360 number = 1 TFlop

What is better?

Well, the cell processor also has 8 cores, but I'll be running DmC at twice the framerate with perfect image quality on a i5-2500k (quad) vs. the PS3 version.  The GPU and RAM in a home built PC are not just better, but they are also 7 years newer at this point, which is a huge advantage.  This outweighs the need for anything crazy like a 8 core processor-- there aren't many of them out and it's just an unnecessary amount of power for gaming (unless you're running a game on a PS3 and need to use all that cell power to avoid overloading the crappy little GPU it has.)

680s are obviously great cards and would scale up for longer than most other cards.

Your processor and GPU choice can't really be sized up yet, but hardware has outpaced the graphical and processing needs of most games.  There's no way to predict what the 720/PS4 will do from day 1, but I can't imagine it'll be a night and day difference between them and a good $1000 rig (for the ram, GPU, CPU, and mobo) you can currently buy.  The rig might even win.  Basically, the more expensive and stronger GPU + CPU you get, the longer your PC will scale up, but there's no way to say for how long exactly...probably a long time, as long as you don't cheap out.

hardware wise, you could definitely build something that'll outpace Durango for a long time.

but console feature wise and game wise, it'd be smart to wait a few months to see what MS has to offer.

it's four netbook CPUs. in performance terms, any mid range i5 will fuck its mother as it watches and make it paint the fence to say thank you.

i'll echo the "never go cheap on a PC" sentiment. i know certain quarters are all about econo builds, but have a little self respect. a few extra bones spread around getting higher quality parts of similar performance (a case not made of cardboard and a GPU which doesn't give you tinnitus) can dramatically improve your sex life.

if we're lucky cruncheon will take some julian assange turn and circulate a "build this if you don't want to get fucked by next gen" pastebin between dipping it dry in sorta willing swedish politics students.

Another rumor

http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/49454/xbox-720-called-xbox-x-surface

Quote
The Xbox 720 will not be called that when it is finally announced. Instead, Microsoft will be reverting to the name of its first games console released 11 years ago, Xbox.

In addition, it will be seen as a hub to a number of devices to carry an "X" branding, one of which will be the much-rumoured 7-inch gaming tablet, which Pocket-lint has learnt will be called X-Surface, not Xbox Surface as previously thought.

The X-Surface will not be a Windows 8 or Windows RT device, we have been told by a tipster very close to the project who, naturally, wishes to remain anonymous. Instead, it will be a standalone portable gaming system. On launch, we are informed, it will be able to access the games, music and video hubs of the new Xbox, but will not have any apps of its own. It will not have a desktop as part of its operating system, rather be entirely focused on playing full console-quality games.

Although there are no technical specifications touted, we have also been told that the X-Surface tablet has much improved hardware over a Surface RT. With the source claiming that he/she "witnessed Unreal Engine 3 demos running at a solid 60fps".

There are also unconfirmed rumours that the X-Surface will have a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless protocol for compatibility with Xbox 360 controllers and, it is said, future control devices.

As for the "Xbox" itself, the tipster has confirmed some of the specifications previously leaked. "The majority of information leaked recently by many sources is true," Pocket-lint was told.

Microsoft is working with AMD on the central and graphics processors. The CPU will be 8-core, as previously rumoured, although each core will be running at 1.9GHz instead of the 1.6GHz reported. The rumours on the graphics trip were true, being an 800MHz GPU. "One benchmark used internally has been a custom build Watch Dogs E3 demo which runs at 55-60fps with only five cores at 100 per cent," we were told.

We've seen Ubisoft's Watch Dogs demo running on a super powered PC at E3 2012, so if this is true, the Xbox's graphical prowess will be most impressive.

One incorrect former rumour about the new Xbox that has been quashed by the tipster is that one of the cores will be dedicated to running the operating system. The OS will have a similar look to Windows 8, with moveable tiles, but won't be literally using that software. It will also require two-cores to run, as it will remain active in the background in order to provide full multitasking functionality. "Very much akin to Nintendo's offerings on 3DS and Wii U - but on a far larger scale," explained the source.

A couple of the features of multitasking explained to us include video calling in games (with users able to determine which corner of the screen to place the feed), and the ability to take screengrabs to save to hard drive or SkyDrive.

The source hasn't had access to the new Xbox controller, but says that button placement must be the same considering a normal Xbox 360 controller has been used in development. It will look different however, we have been told, as two design teams have been working on the controller alone.
