Just generally curious. Is there enough extra capability going from DirectX 9 to 11.1 to sustain 6-8 yrs of new graphics engines? I am a complete ignoramus about what my GPU is doing these days but the impression I have is that PC games are using the capabilities afforded by DX11 in the most superficial of ways (cheap tessellation mostly). So I would expect the next-gen console games in 2-3 yrs to look way different from (and considerably more sophisticated than) current PC DX11 games. Vague I know but is this reasonable?

Pretty much.  DX11 is on my 3 year old pc.  I dont know that the .1 does though.

And some seem to have a real hatred of MS. I've noticed nearly all the very worst Sony fanboys on Gaf are from Europe.

Things are changing. Although MS though really needs to make more effort next gen in Europe especially if they expect people to pay for it. Live is very barebones in terms of language support, content and apps owing mostly to certain parts of Europe having really shit content providers and many of the companies like Netflix very slow or unwilling to roll out in many parts of Europe.

Things move kinda slow here but new iphone generations are probably headed into that direction.Other thing is that there was never much(if any) love towards American technology.Japanese quality,German quality...just those two things

Microsoft's treatment of Europe was pretty shitty initially, and looked even worse as Sony Europe treated them as their own territory were well looked after. To their credit Microsoft realised that and tried to be more like Sony Europe than Nintendo of Europe.

As for playstation,it made (console)gaming popular here and it was piratable two times in a row,lots of goodwill there.

U.S. was Nintendo country.  There was a period where SNES vs. Genesis was a close fight, but towards the end, SNES games just kept staying awesome while the Genesis became a tower of shit and the company as a whole never recovered.   Master System didn't have much of a scene in the U.S. I knew one guy who had one.

Those games were huge here as well!  I befriended a kid in 6th grade after hearing from someone else that he got a genesis with phantasy star 2, Golden axe, Strider, and others!  Strider was the most insane game I'd seen to date and is still a huge highlight for that generation.   I wonder why it never got a SNES port.  I would've liked a Strider sequel for SNES in the vein of the NES version, but less shitty, less bugs, etc.  There's potential for a good Zelda II-style action rpg in the nes strider.

MS has mades great strides in Europe (mostly UK) but their approach is so anglo-saxon that I don't know if they can really penetrate other markets as well.

Don't forget PLAYSTATION is a Champions League sponsor, and Europe is football country (well even US is that now since FIFA is a top 10 2012 selling game) but Champions League can be said in one breath with Playstation and Heineken, which in 80% of Europe is enough.

I had a C64 before I got a NES, and while it had a fair number of cool games, I felt like the kid who had GoBots instead of Transformers.

The C64 was released 4 years before the NES in Europe. Not a fair comparison.

I was completely mouth inhaling hedgehog fur for most of my youth, had a master system, mega drive, saturn then begrudgingly got a PSX, ended up playing it more than my Saturn (volume of good games, not that I liked it better) and a similar situation happened with Dreamcast. This gen I bought a 360 first, it pissed me off, then a Wii, it pissed me off, then a PS3 and it just worked for me. In between I played commodore 64, 128 games, old DOS games, was primarily a PC gamer in the 90's and all sorts of other bizarre gaming adventures. I think just about the only consoles I never owned (NES era+) was the PC-FX, Turbografx, Pippen, Wonderswan and some more obscure bullshit.

I think if your introduction to gaming was more complex stuff like C64/Amiga/PC/Amstrad and things like 3D graphics in Alone in the Dark, or hard games like CIV it's kind of natural this will determine your taste in gaming.

I guess it depends if you look at it anachronistically which games are still relevant/being milked out now. And as you say CONSOLES. C64/Amiga etc. were more then that.

The fact that Chrono Trigger was on the SNES doesn't make Sensible Soccer just as iconic/classic. In fact Im pretty much sure anyone from that time in Europe will only remember Sensible Soccer.

By the way NES, SNES and N64 all sold under 9 million units in Europe. MS tied with the NES here and the Mega Drive outsold the SNES. The PS1 and PS2 outsold the N64 and GCN by like 5 to 1.

I have no doubt then when all is said and done the PS3 will have outsold the Wii here too.

Nintendo just doesn't have it in Europe.
