to be fair you could replace 360 with ps2 and you would have the same arguement.

What are the latest rumors for when Microsoft shows off its hardware? GDC is in mid-March and I know Gears 2 was announced there, and maybe we'll see some of the first third party games.  Can't imagine the Sony show will have much if any of a third party presence.

Bungie's Destiny (mmo sci-fi shooter published by activision) is a time exclusive for Microsoft systems, I think.  I'm forgetting the details but that right there is a boon for Microsoft.

As for whoever wins, the sensible people will flock to whichever console is better.  I'd imagine some of the 360 audience would choose Nintendo, if you could imagine a world where the Wii U didn't exist and Nintendo put out a better system than Sony or Microsoft.  Besides, the kids who are pining for sony's comeback would be happy with whatever they put out anyway; just look at how the kids in nintendo's corner embraced the wii u.

According to the VZBV, they are seeking to take this as far as the Supreme Court in order to protect and strengthen the consumer rights within the digital distribution medium on a few conditions 1.) They feel it's unfair that some products launch at full price but the consumer is unable to easily or conveniently refund or resell the product like any other consumer good on the market, such as a board game. 2.) The purposed technical hurdles put in place by digital distributors to prevent or prohibit the resale of digital software works against consumer interest for the long term and sustained growth of digital distribution (think 20 years from now where consumers will be tied by the balls by any and every major corporation who decides to jump into the digital game space with their own set of restrictions and purchasing conditions).

The European Court of Justice ruled last year that digital content falls under the "First-Sale Doctrine".

GTA:IV has sold 25 million copies and is still an important game to draw people in. GTAV is one of the most anticipated games of this year. If that's losing "relevance" I'm sure other devs who's games sell less than 2 million lifetime sales want it.

As for CoD I think you underestimate the pull of that game and it's particular addictiveness. The interesting thing I find about CoD is you still have people playing all the older games as well as the new ones I know people who still play MW2 and the first BO online on 360. Having a next gen CoD launch is a chance to pull all those players back together in one place.

My point wasn't that GTA bombed this gen, but that it was dethroned by CoD. Of course GTA sells massive numbers, as CoD will continue to. But I think there will be another "THE" game next gen that take's CoD's place.

During the PS2 era it was "GTA" this, "GTA" that. Whole sandbox franchises were born out of GTA's wake. That stopped happening this gen, as FPS's are the genre du jour. Coincidentally, the genre CoD is in.

To be fair Read Dead Redemption was huge as well, massive. So id say that no GTA/Rockstar hasnt lost relevance as far as system sellers go and weaboo u wont ever be a serious console without it.

Funny you mention the binary opinions of gamers because Andrex' is exactly that failing to see Rockstar is still top dog in the big picture with their distinct flavour. This is what they tried to do last gen but failed with bully and manhunt.

Red Dead is at what 10 million? Even duds like max payne and la noire push millions.

This is a whole different ballgame. If anything the thing COD exemplifies is a shift to online mp, and it struck the right chords there with amazing mp (hence mw1 is one of my top games ever).

Gta didnt cause a shift in games then and it doesnt now, but it keeps selling the same, hence its relevance is pretty much the same as it was.

Though I'm sure someone else would've created an open world game, but the open-world genre is pretty substantial-- Just Cause, Crackdown, Infamous, Saint's Row, Sleeping Dogs, Batman Arkham City, lots more.  They all do some things better and worse than GTA.  A lot of how these games are described in relation to GTA.  So even if it's bad, like all these games giving you more freedom than GTA, it's still the benchmark of the genre.  You could describe Batman Arkham City most quickly by saying "like GTA but--" and then you list what AA does uniquely. 


and also creating a genre makes a game more relevant than a game that changes a genre, particularly when the creator is still putting out the games that sell the most and are rated the highest in the genre.

Maybe he is taking optimization (faerie dust+secret sauce) into consideration. I am very much aware that these new consoles will likely not be quite as powerful as a current mid-range PC, but I'm just saying this statement isn't as crazy as people are making it to be.

Yes, in fact, I said that the new processors would be "capable" of rendering at 240 frames per second. I didn't say "FPS", know what a frame is, and know that most movies are shot in 24 frames per second.

It is unlikely that anything will be made in higher resolution than 2 megapixel or run at faster than 60 frames per second, which is pretty realistic, but the new consoles are being built to last past the end of the 1080p display cycle. If we go to 4K display, which I believe is 8 megapixel, they may not have to run faster than 60 frames per second (and the size of game files clearly becomes an issue, regardless), but I believe that the processors can handle rendering faster than 60 frames per second.

You're free to disagree with me, perhaps we'll find out in a few weeks when Sony announces a new console. Although I agree that the viewing experience will not be materially improved at 240 frames per second, I'm pretty sure what I said is right, and that the new consoles will be capable of rendering at that speed.

For what it's worth, I don't think anyone wants to play a game with 5000 independently controlled characters on screen, but I'm pretty sure the new processors will allow some number like that as well. It wouldn't make sense to build that into the game, but I was asked what the difference in processing power would be, and I replied "probably around four times as fast in terms of data as the current generation consoles." When the follow up was "what does 'four times as fast' mean?'", I replied with the faster frame rate or greater number of characters quote.

I'm still amazed that so many GAF members have to be assholes when commenting on things I say.
