I could still end up buying a console, I would just play less games then I guess. Just stick to a Fifa and some other staples 1/2 games a year.

Well, this sucks. I'm a pretty GameFly user so this would cut into my game playing and eventual buying, unless Microsoft and I guess Sony, actually had sales frequently and games dropped price at a good clip.

But you can't re-sell Steam and iOS games, so what difference does it make?  It's the same thing.

Steam games and iOS games are cheap. It's a lot easier to swallow never being able to lend out, sell, or trade a game when it's $5, less so when it's $40-60.

I'll just go ahead and say that if I have to start being super-selective about games I won't be buying any console. Not worth investing $400 in something I'm only going to buy 3-4 $60 games for over the course of its lifespan. I mean, it's fine if they want to do this, I'm just not going to buy into it. I already have a crazy Steam library to work through.

The actual act of building a PC is pretty easy. The hardest part as a novice is picking the parts. And in that regard, the usual process is that you put together a list of components, which is typically the following:

1.) Case
2.) Power Supply
3.) CPU
4.) Motherboard
5.) GPU
6.) Hard Drive
7.) Optical Drive
8.) RAM

Other optional things you may need to consider depending on what you already have include a monitor and an operating system. But assembling all of this crap took considerably less time than deciding on what to buy. And the process is usually just that you put together a shopping cart of an order you're about to pull the trigger on, and the tech people tell you where you've gone wrong ("you're CPU is crap compared to your GPU," or "The Power Supply is over/under powered for your graphics card.") I don't think it's that simple that people will just follow suit eventually. The day 1 user is also the user that uses trade in programs the most and therefore has less money to invest in new stuff. The guy that mostly buys used might not even exist and those people still make some kind of money for the industry under the current circumstances. It would change the current economy of game business (at least if used game sales and trade ins are actually as big as the industry makes us believe) and is a huge bet that might go either way for the industry. It will probably even further accelerate the trend of this generation that only big and some indie games make money and all the middle tier stuff falls by the wayside.

The thing is that the market that buys every new release also trades in their 3 month old release. When they find out they can't do that anymore then their consuming habits will have to change. That may be enough to overcome the peer pressure angle.

I buy mostly new games, never trade them in. It hardly seems worth it for the cash you get from Japan stores. I guess i'd be happy with some kind of long-ish term digital rental service. It can take me ages to finish a game (or play enough to decide i'm finished...) so I'd be happy to pay say $20 for a month and wave bye-bye afterward. No physical copies to store, no trips to horrible game stores. I could live with that fine. Convenience uber alles. I'd probably end up spending about $80 a month that way, which would be a fucking GREAT deal for the content providers.

I don't like the used games thing. I've said it in many posts before. I think its the future for all consoles whether its this gen, or next gen, or whatever comes after consoles. I don't like buying used physical property and then being told how I can use that physical property. It's anti-consumer.

I'm still going to buy a next gen console. Along with a decent PC that I already have. Won't buy multiple consoles though. I don't like it but I still like playing  games. So I'll just be more choosey about what I play on the next consoles. What I want to see is all the excuses that crop up when revenue doesn't bounce back as much as they think it will.

PS4 is sounding pretty hawt. Pretty sure I'll be jumping at launch on this one again  :'( One big bonus I can see MS having over Sony is BC. Will either have it? No cell means there at least won't be full retail BC but what about PSN titles? Will BC only apply to PSN/XBL titles only? Seems like a big spot to fuck up in, and I can't imagine MS messing this one up. Sony on the other hand

No used games is fine if the price is right, but it won't be. And it's not like there are a plethora of console exclusives anymore, you need to have your title on as many platforms as possible.

Another PlayStation 4 report is in from Nikkei.

According to the Japanese outlet, the network function of PlayStation 4 will be expanded, including a new social feature where you can exchange opinions among your friends while playing games.

The system is said to utilize Gaikai cloud technology, which Sony purchased for $380 million in the summer of last year.

Echoing previous reports, the outlet claims the Sony developed “Cell” chip loaded onto the PlayStation 3 will not be included in PlayStation 4, and that it’ll arrive by the holidays.

PlayStation 4 is expected to be revealed during PlayStation Meeting 2013 in New York City on February 20. Its controller will supposedly have a touch pad.

I can't imagine buying both this year.  When I look back on this generation, there are too few exclusives on both sides to justify it.  And when I look back to the PS2-era, I didn't miss out on anything by buying my Xbox years after launch.

and the rumor of no cell in the ps4 is worrying.  backwards compatibility is important enough that I'm willing to pay a good amount extra for the 'premium' hardware or power base.
