Not sure why people are surprised about mandatory Kinect.MS is not going to put Kinect in every box and make it optional to use.

Agreed. If its in the box you can guarantee its almost certainly mandatory for a lot of aspects.

the only thing that would make this better is having to read the disc key code out loud to activate your games

"Xbox, game activation. 768, capital A, capital B, capital D, lower case G, 333, capital V, capital Z, 785."

"768, capital A, capital D, capital B, lower case V, 333, capital Z, capital V, 785 is not a valid game activation code. Please read a valid game activation code."

"God damnit. 768, capital Aaaaa, capital Bbbbbb, capital Ddddd, lower case Ggggg, 333, capital Vvvvv, capital Zzzzz, 785."

"Goddamnit768, capital A, capital D, capital B, lower case V, 333, capital Z, capital V, 785 is not a valid game activation code. Please read a valid game activation code."

Well, at the very least, the new Xbox is looking pretty unlikely for Oscar's trashcan.  If all these rumours pan out, I've got pretty much no interest in it, and my son certainly isn't going to ask for one.  I'll probably end up with a PS4 in the long run for Yakuza, and I bet my son is still gonna want a WiiU come Xmas.

I thought we were talking about next gen systems in here :smug

“Yes, we started with video games, but we have been on a journey to make Xbox the center of every household’s entertainment,” says Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business.

2012 also marked the Xbox’s biggest year for entertainment and games usage. Users enjoyed more than 18 billion hours of entertainment in 2012, with entertainment app usage growing 57 percent year over year globally. Last year in the United States, Xbox LIVE Gold members averaged 87 hours per month on Xbox, an increase of 10 percent year over year

Xbox has had success with live events such as the Elections 2012 Hub on Xbox LIVE, which aired the presidential debates with an added interactive polling capability. Viewers submitted 3 million answers to on-screen questions during the live telecast of one of the debates. More recently, Xbox aired an interactive red carpet experience for this year’s Grammy Awards and will be doing the same for the 85th Academy Awards.

During 2013, Microsoft is planning to launch more than 40 new voice-controlled, customized TV and entertainment apps on Xbox.

“We want to partner with the industry to bring entertainment into a new era,” she says. “It’s an era when interactive entertainment becomes the greatest form of all entertainment – and we couldn’t be more excited to play a part in it.”

Once turned on, each Durango console will display a RROD. In order to re-enable the console, gamers must dance and gyrate convincingly enough to impress the newly christened Kinect 2.0: Uncle K.

Unless the actual unveil is drastically different from what we've been led to believe, right now I think I have zero interest in the new Microsoft platform. I now have a decent PC and a Wii U. I think I'm going to wait and see how February 20 and E3 pan out. If Sony impresses me, I might set aside some cash for a PS4. If not, I'll probably go ahead and upgrade my PC. That old quad core AMD processor from Aught Nine ain't what she used to be. So I'm looking to get an Intel CPU/new mobo/RAM within the next year or two.

To me it sounds like they could be next gen's complacently successful company.  What are they going to do when all the content delivery services (that they make you pay $50 to access before the individual service sub fees) come installed as apps in TV + DVR + BR playermenu systems?

People bought 360s because MS put effort into delivering the shit out of some games when the PS3 wasn't.   That strategy can work again, but the moneyhats can't go towards deals with media companies and Nike Kinect Fitness Bullshit That Doesn't Work And You Won't Even Use It Anyways 2

I think there's a real possibility they could just swipe Playstation Plus wholesale and add it to Live Gold, which is currently relatively worthless compared to Plus and it's only going to lose more value over time.

I'll wait for the actual announcements, actual features, and actual games before deciding. So far nothing I didn't expect has happened yet.

The Xbox has the edge for me as usual since I had one last gen but if the price is stupid or they don't show anything that looks interesting I'll wait or look into the PS 4. Still interesting the see the PS 4 info later this month just to get a flavor for what next gen might hold.

if kinect didn't suck I'd be interested in it...it's always been conceptually interesting to me and, again, if it worked, simple head tracking in any first person game is a good addition without sacrificing your dignity.

I mean, people were into that steel battalion game before they played it!

guessing the mandatory part is more for the interface than its places in games.  either siri voice commands or mimicking touch screen-isms with spasms.

and if we're basing stuff on rumors only, sony's stuff is sounding more interesting.  but these are just rumors.

Basically, I'm not interested in a console as anything other than A DEDICATED GAME MACHINE.  What's frightening is that the weeeeoooooo may actually fit that bill better than either of the other two, which seem to be going the "media center/appeal to casual wankery" route that I find actively offensive and off-putting.  Too bad the weeeeooooo is gimped powerwise and doomed.

I don't like Kinect. Never have. I understand why it exists which is different than it being something that I would ever use. Wish it wasn't in the next xbox but every platform nowadays needs some gimmick to try to bring in the sweaty masses. The only part of Kinect that has ever been remotely useful logic wise for me is voice commands. I'm fine with voice commands for lots of uses and I think that's actually a good thing. I don't need a dumb ass camera though to do silly hand gestures or play motion control games.

My take is this. You have 4 platforms that offer pretty different world views of what gaming should be with the 3 consoles and the PC. I'm not sure why people get all upset about certain platforms not being catered to them 100% when you have a pretty wide open market. Not aimed at you but just a general comment. The market will sort of work out who has the best set of actual features that people want.

But the days of a console just being a souped up super Nintendo are pretty much over. Netflix made that pretty clear.

Kinect isn't worth paying for (although my kid has played a fair amount of the shit you'd expect) but I don't see how it ruins the experience for anyone. Your PC also does a bunch of shit you don't need it to do, and likely comes bundled with a bunch of software you likely uninstall or ignore (oh shut up Andrex). What's the big fuckin' deal. Ignore it and be glad those things and the people who buy them are subsidizing YOUR purchase

I see both sides (as usual :P)

Seriously though.

Kinect for the hardcore crowd represents everything that is wrong with gaming. It's one thing when it was a separate add on thing last gen. You may not have liked it, but it wasn't like you had to go buy it or anything. Now it feels like its being shoved down your throat. And however much it costs, I wish that money went towards something I could actually find useful. I get it. That is the perspective a certain segment of the hard-core community will come in with.

Or course the other side of me realizes it's just not enough to capture the hardcore forum types. You need something that can appeal to casuals, kids, families, etc. All that shit they will stick in the promotional videos even though all I want to do is kill aliens and level up.

I'm not one of those people who rages about a console being more than a console. I think you can add stuff. Separate stuff that I enjoy. I like the app approach MS has taken. I like Netflix, I like ESPN, etc. It's going to be more about picking and choosing things I actually want outside of gaming when it comes to services like that. I don't like Kinect because MS has never given me a reason to like it. We will see if they can do it this go around.

I'm not saying anyone here is going to love or even not-hate Kinect of course....I'm just saying that given the way most of you creamed over Watch Dogs (which was just the barest hint of next-gen), you'll likely get over the inclusion of Kinect and whatever Sony does. Post-Wii, consoles are gonna have some daft kind of motion-sensing bullshit until that trend can be confirmed dead. It's not even worth arguing about, it's just inevitable. I got over that about 4 years ago. If you think Kinect adds too much to the price, you will likely hold off until the price comes down to whatever you imagine a Kinect-less console is worth.

I dunno, Sixaxis was in PS3, it supposedly cost me extra money in some way 'cause R&D went into it and it had gyros...i don't care. I never used it, it didn't bother me in the slightest and I stopped thinking about it years ago. I'm totally sure there will be an option to disable all the Kinect stuff if you want to (if there is one thing a Microsoft OS does, it's provide lots of meaningless options)

I think microsoft is seriously overestimating how much people want a media machine.

If you already have something that streams netflix (basicly any device now) you dont need something else.

Not to mention none of this is even slightly relevant outside of the us.

I doubt kinect 2 will win europe and japan over.

Their biggest market is the US by a long shot so there is always that. Not to mention, I think MS (and sony and Nintendo) is simply looking for the next big thing. Whatever that is. No one knows what that is so you throw a bunch of shit at the wall and hope you get it. They may not get it at all. Certainly possible. But what I will say is that simply catering to the hardcore types won't get it either. You already have them. Consoles need something extra to attract people outside of the core. So when forum people rage about certain things, I understand it, but I also take it in the context of their being a larger picture. I think the hardcore have a pretty poor track record when predicting what will ultimately crossover to the very mainstream portions of the market. Doesn't mean you have to like that shit though. I totally get that part.  :)

Durango game installations will also be mandatory, as games can't directly access data from the disc.
Quote
The next-generation Xbox—the one that will follow the still-popular Xbox 360—will run multiple games at once, require game installations

This is pretty interesting because it kinda implies disc activation's.Retail games are the problem,to seamlessly switch between games disc would have to be tied to a console(user account). Otherwise you could install the game and then just sell the disc.

My little ramble,

Always online requirement
1.You activate the disc and the game becomes yours in digital space(delete and download as many times as you want)
2.You can sell the disc but new user will have to pay activation fee

Always on is not a requirement(two cases)
1.Same as above
2.User can play the game offline but as soon he connects to Live, system will ask for activation code or else

1.Same as above
2.User can play the game offline but he is denied of any online functions that the game has including patches...unless he pays activation fee

I guess it all depends on how many people plan to never connect to Live or don't care about patching and online stuff.

Spin that record, maxy. Spin it around.

3rd place awaits for MS next-gen.
I have nothing against that if sfeggits start funding my favorite games.

I think microsoft is seriously overestimating how much people want a media machine.

If you already have something that streams netflix (basicly any device now) you dont need something else.

Not to mention none of this is even slightly relevant outside of the us.

I doubt kinect 2 will win europe and japan over.

Think smartphones vs dedicated handhelds. It's not about what you have but what you don't have. You can also think of it as releasing 360 game that looks like n64 game, bar is a lot higher these days for better or worse.

I think there on the right track with making a games console and integrated media machine. As for Netflix  it does depend what I stream it on. At home I have my PS3, 2 Xboxes,2 ipods,iPad, 4 laptops a PC and an iMac desktop machine with a very sexy screen.

I can watch Netflix on any of those screens but unless I'm sitting on the toilet, I prefer to use the 360 or PS3 versions as they're on the biggest and best screens in the house that are also hooked up to my surround sound system, no point watching HD movies if you're going to have shitty sound to go with it.

MS obviously have the stats to back up their thinking.

Japan seems like a non starter but Europe is ripe for expansion if they target certain countries first.

Im sorry there are tv's with this media funcionality now.

Also if you know the EU market it is by no means ready for expansion. The legal issues surrounding licenses will prevent this for a long time. The market is fragmented as hell.

If this is the nextbox trump card then it will crash and burn in the EU hard. Things like torrents are mega huge (almost every Western European country even has a pirate party that is for piracy, Im talking Sweden, Holland etc.) in every country here and people just stream those to tv or burn them and then play em.

Yeah:

Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Halo, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Gears of War, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Halo, FIFA, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, Netflix

*yawn*
Not sure if you are just trolling or some inner raging sfag has awakened but I would suggest that you take a look at sales charts/XBL charts/Netflix usage among platforms.

Edit: actually, the HDMI out has me a bit skeptical

Patent reveals 4G Vita, some places have details.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=47613598&postcount=1

  •     A new 4G model of the PlayStation Vita will be replacing the 3G model sometime this year. According to the source, this will be the so-called “price drop” that has been rumored for the Vita as the new model will retain the $299 price point for an upgraded system.
  •    The Wi-Fi version will still be available on the market for $249
  • To go along with the 4G model, a significant firmware update will go live bringing in a lot of requested features including new ways to organize apps in folders.
  •   The new model may be unveiled along with the rumored PS4 this month at PlayStation’s February 20th event or at E3, but will not hit the market until later in the year.
  •    A price cut on memory cards will be made. No details on prices.

Ok, the first bullet point is so classically Sony that I already find this entire list credible.  Nobody fucking bought the 3G model and it wasn't because they find 3G slow and were hoping for 4G...nobody wants a fucking data plan for their gaming handheld!  It wouldn't be a problem, but it's priced exactly the same.  If it was $249 4G, $199 Wifi, this 4G crap would just seem a little silly, but there would at least be a drop.

but the rest of it all sounds good and should help the system.  Memory card price cut being the words everyone has been waiting for about the Vita.  Hopefully the cuts are great, but I have a feeling they'll just get bumped down a $10 notch or something.

As I said before, the Xbox is going to be a social media device first, a media set top box second, and a games machine third.

Everyone here is desperate to siphon off Apple consumers so they're trying to thrash around in the blue ocean to try to find something that will stick with the masses.  It's Microsoft throwing as much shit on the wall in hopes that at least a couple things will stick.  That means we're going to see a lot of derpy shit from them in the coming months.

After the reception of W8 I think MS will have a hard time convincing people in Europe to switch to them for any kind of content providing.

It's just really weird to see them drop out of the Europe arena after they tried so hard before.

I really don't get it.

Maybe they have some ace up their sleeve and they have struck a deal no one could do before to provide movies across the continent.

Used 3G Vitas are going for less than the Wifi Vitas here for some reason.  You can get one for like $160 right now.  I sure hope Sony's not fooling themselves about that 4G Vita having any effect at all.  On the plus side, it might push down used prices for the 3G even more.  If it gets to $120, I'll grab one. :drool
:omg
Lowest used price here is about $300 for 3G,no memory card no nothing(new one is $470).

Pretty disappointed if true. I was hoping Sony would announce a vita xl with full ps4 controls that lets you stream ps4 games to the new vita (like the wii u gamepad) in addition to all normal vita stuff. I might be the only one hoping for this though  :'(

The browser on the vita is really terrible and playing games would eat up your data pretty fast. I can’t imagine anyone seriously wants 4G

Xfegs must be pretty down in the dumps after all the recent leaks about PS4's powerful power and Durango's anti-consumer and dare I say anti-GAMING features.

I don't know why either of those things would be upsetting or surprising to either the xfags or sfags.  Sony is, first a foremost, a hardware company.  Why is it a shock that they're going to make a powerful system that probably won't break down for the next 6-10 years?  Microsoft is, first and foremost, a software company.  So why would it be surprising that they're going to focus on the "whole experience" and not put as much effort into the hardware specs?

I do like a couple of things I am hearing about the next gen consoles

if they have baked-in screenshots and video recording, that means more funny Saint's Row type videos from guys like Hitler Stole My Potato, and that's nice

i know i am probably in the minority, but i think they could do some cool shit with tablets like Xbox Glass and whatever Sony does (always-on full maps, inventory, etc)

...

that's about it, for now

really, though, my decision has kinda been made for me, and 2014 will probably be even worse with the coming mandatory extra monthly bill, so no outrage here - i'm just in it for the laughs for the foreseeable future

Seriously you Sony fanboys are LIVID. Worse than nintards at this point. PS3 loses to the Xbox and you guys are fucking bitter about it.

I thought PS3 overtook the 360 in sales a few months ago?
