With the PlayStation Meeting now one week away, excitement for the PS4′s announcement is at a fever pitch. Of course, some are still reluctant to believe that the next generation is already upon us, but the size of the meeting’s venue certainly points to the PlayStation 4′s big reveal.

In an invite to PSLS, Sony announced that the PlayStation Meeting will be held at The Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center Studios in New York. Unlike an ordinary press event, which only has 20 or so journalists in attendance, this is going to be a huge event akin to an E3 press conference – The Hammerstein Ballroom’s website states that the venue can accommodate 2,800 people Reception Style or 2,200 people Theater Style.

I'd like to see something truly innovative in a traditional controller but I'll be honest and admit I don't know exactly what that is.

I don't see the purpose for a touchpad but at least it seems relatively harmless in the grand scheme of things.

yeah, controllers for the past ~15 years haven't changed much.  Everything is an evolution of the dual shock, and the Saturn 3D pad for the analog triggers.  Wii remote and nunchuck are comfortable to use because they're detached, and the pointer is great for games where you're not moving the camera, but it's a step back or a side step more than an improvement.  And I do really like the idea behind the Wii U pad and wanted the other two to do something similar, only smarter, and with an actual vision.

I also like the Wii U pad and secretly wish the others would copy it. At least maybe as a high end option for the default controller. I would love that alot more than Kinect 2.0

The idea behind the gamepad is not a bad one per se, it's just that I view it like every other gimmick- I would rather that time, effort and money just be put into making a more powerful console that runs games better and more efficiently. 

I understand WHY the big 3 do these things, and even why it's a good idea for them to do so, but that doesn't change the fact that it's shitty for ME and what I want out of gaming.

The absolute best use for a weeeeeoooo gamepad I've seen offered is as a pip boy in a Fallout game.  Too bad we'll never know, because Bethesda doesn't want to put out games on shitty 2008ish hardware anymore, and really who could blame them.

That's one of my problems with the Wii U.  Nintendo simultaneously advertises playing games on the tablet AND new ways to play games when these are, for the most part, mutually exclusive ideas.  It allows for touch screen input in games, like how it might work on a Vita or iPad, but that too is limited.  To use a shit analogy, Nintendo's solution was to cut the cake in half and it led to an unsatisfactory conclusion.

If Sony or Microsoft were to do it, and it's looking like a 'no', I'd say drop the off-screen play.  I'm into the idea of off-screen play, but I'd rather they commit and fully develop one idea.

Wasn't it just a rework of the Gamebryo engine? I remember there being a big hoopla over the engine and then Bethesda just came out and said its the 2.0 version of the engine.

- They note that Microsoft has been less communicative with the editors than Sony, which would explain why we have less information about the next Xbox (this last part is my own guess)
- Out before December 2013 in the USA, announcement this semester
- You will be able to stream content from your console to another device, like Smartglass on Xbox 360, or the Wii U Controller. They refer to this as a "companion app"
- Always on, always connected. The system will download content which you will then be able to simply activate (read: buy)
- HD Kinect integrated, allowing the user to "wake up" the Xbox with a word or a specific gesture
- Microsoft wants to ban used games, but not 100% sure yet. No decision taken yet


Orbis rumors:
- Out in 2013 in the USA
- Like Durango, Orbis will allow you to stream content to another device, and Sony could even announce a partnership with Apple at E3 for this functionality to work with iPhones
- The PS4 controller will have a touchpad and a camera (their wording is a little weird here, maybe they mean the system will have a camera, not the controller...)
- Just like the Vita, there will be some "cross-buy" high-profile multiplatform games. You buy a PS3 game, you also get the PS4 version. This would also work with 360 games! The PS 4 will have some sort of motion control solution. A touchpad on the the controller, and if you think it won't be full of media functionality you are living in a dream world. So I'm not sure what a "true" gaming console is at this point.

It's pretty clear which system should appeal to certain people based on how things went down this gen. If ads bother you then don't buy microsoft products. It's going to have them. If you want more Japan centric titles then the PS 4 is probably going to be the system for you. Nothing new here.

There has become this weird forum divide especially over at places like GAF where some people think Sony is the savior of old style gaming and microsoft is the devil of new entertainment medium/gaming console.

Like any generalization there is of course some truth to this but its way overblown. Microsoft definitely pushes ahead in this stuff and sometimes into more annoying areas than Sony does but this idea that Sony isn't trying to do a lot of this stuff or is the standard bearer for a different vision is  just not the case. The world moves forward in ways you like and don't like sometimes. It's not 1995 anymore.

Yeah, I'm not a huge consumer of non-gaming media (well, aside from music, obv.) so the media capabilities of 360/PS3 mostly go unused. I'll watch the occasional BRD on my PS3 but that's about it. I don't like the messy layout of the 360 OS and how cluttered everything looks with all the ads, the XMB is infinitely "classier" looking and easier to find shit in.

I have a suspicion that MS has completely given up on Japan which would mean that the 720 won't offer me anything. PS4 and WiiU (which I already own) are gonna be my picks, and of course 3DS on portables. Possibly Vita if it gets firesaled.

I would agree with you based on how this gen went down. They will get the traditional stuff since those companies would be crazy to not put it out on the MS platform for America and Europe but I'd be shocked to see anything but a half-hearted attempted at Japan if that. It's just a waste of money for them.

The 360 got some extremely niche Japanese games though (most of which didn't even come to the west) which I highly doubt were moneyhatted by MS - games like Steins;Gate, the Cave shooters, assorted loli uguu visual novels, etc. I wonder what will happen to these?

yeah, microsoft courted japan.  or simped, whatever it is these days.  you had not-Dragon Quest and not-Final Fantasy, but it didn't work.  someone into sales could prove me wrong, but it also felt like Japan's importance had a significant drop this gen compared to the PS2 era.  so it's totally understandable if Microsoft took a 'fuck em' stance with the next xbox.

I am all for the adding of more multimedia functionality into both consoles.

Sony delivered the PS3 with the promise of a multimedia powerhouse and Microsoft proceeded to trump them in every possible way (including game quality)...which is hilarious because the high horse that so many xfeggits rode before this gen started about wanting a pure games machine and how Sony was using blu ray as a trojan horse into the living room (which they were).  Ironic how they have no problem whatsoever with it now.

They'll need to try a lot harder this time around. Xbox Live wasn't even available in parts of Europe during this generation and the availability of services like Netflix is still very limited. One of the reasons that Sony is still popular here is that they put more effort into localization for all the regions where people refuse to learn English.

MS is pretty much giving up on Europe if they use this media approach as I said before.

Netflix penetration in the EU is 0.2%.
Netlfix is only available in just over 10% of the EU (UK/Ireland).

Netlfix has 25 million subs in North America.
Netflix has 1 million subs in Europe.

And this is the biggest streaming service in Europe. Other media services are even smaller/worse. This is not a valid approach for this continent.

Yep. You can't really blame them when they issued Sega exclusives with the first XBox and went waaaaay out of their way to market to them with the 360 at first.

EDIT: Sometimes I wonder if the 360 has this loyal cult following in Japan. Considering how big american things usually are there when its not video games related.

Seems like there'd be a fair amount of them and a bunch of games to play, all for cheap.  There HAVE to be hardcore dudes who lament that Japan picked the PS3, as the 360 just had better everything for quite some time.   But I bet they're pretty happy on some level-- it's probably a lot like Dreamcast fire sales in the U.S. I got a system for $15 and a bunch of games for jack shit.  Once it all dried up, most of these games skyrocketed in value.

Rumors mentioned the triggers were getting fixed, and both Move controllers had normal triggers.

but yeah, everything else, except for that light at the top (used for ps eye tracking?), is what I wanted.  Vita style d-pad, analog sticks with grips, and what looks to be thicker and more ergonomic grips.  There's also that speaker or microphone, and looks like a headset jack on the bottom.

see, now I'm gonna be disappointed if it's not that.  this is why they have those E3 spoiler threads!
