PS4 GPU isn't as even as fast as one 680 GTX

even with OS overhead eliminated, it's impossible to make up that big of a performance difference

running the best looking games today at 1080p/60fps maxed out or near max is no joke even on the fastest single GPU on the market

so basically, throw out 1080p and 60fps out the window

lots of shit would be running at sub 1080p or sub 60fps just like last-gen

Youre such a graphics courtesan

Hahahaha, are they really letting NEVERSOFT develop Modern Warfare 4?

It's fake. And last I heard the next cod was being done by sledgehammer/infinity.

It will be the first cod I skip since World at War.

At this point it pretty much feels like all the Activision devs they have left basically are support devs for COD except high moon and the ones who work on skylanders stuff.

I'm curious if it's possible to build a PC at the same price as a PS4 or Xbox 3 at launch with similar performance. We don't know the prices yet but I'm thinking $500 would be a good estimate to shoot for. Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm thinking the Gigabyte 660 Ti OC would be a decent bet for a GPU, although if the budget is $500 I'd probably have to drop down to a plain GTX 660. I'm not sure on AMD cards but they might be a better bet in terms of price/performance, OCing, and similarity to the PS4/Xbox 3 GPUs.

GAF thread will get you covered. I made mine about a year ago using the tables they had but I went with AMD.

Bad decision compared to Intel's offerings but I wanted to try AMD at least once in my lifetime and I don't regret it honestly, pretty good rig.

I think you will need to spend about 50% more for the same components and 100% more for the same performance. The PCGamer comparison that was posted on GAF was beyond ridiculous.

You don't think the GTX 660 they suggested would be good enough? Take a look at the ASUS GeForce GTX 660 OC DirectCU, which is $199.99 after rebate. Look at the OC benchmarks in this review. They OCed it and got 1080p 60+ fps on Battlefield 3 at ultra settings and 4x AA. Is that not good enough?

The GPU is good enough, but if you add in the other components and don't exclude the case, PSU, blu-ray drive, OS, controller, and the cameras you'll quickly end up above $500.

AMD GPU is a better bargain than Nvidia although I haven't bought AMD since the 5870

Nvidia just has better support and more consistent performance.  It's not a huge difference but it's nice having the extra bells and whistles like Physx or higher quality AA.

For CPU, Intel is the clear choice.  The little money you'd save on AMD is not worth the dip in performance.  Intel kicks AMD's butt across all price points.

Isn't it fairer though if we include the potential subscriber fees which supposedly are going to be essential?  That's gonna be $200 even if you only own the console for about 3 years.

At $700 you'd get something that will be better, if only because you'll get 60fps almost standard. If you can get to a 7850 you're set.

Here's what I put together after a bit of messing around:

GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 660 OC DirectCU 1020MHZ 2GB 6.0GHZ GDDR5 $199.99 after rebate
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640 $76.98
Mobo: ASUS M5A78L-M LX Plus mATX AM3+ DDR3 AMD 760G $54.99
RAM: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9B Vengeance Blue 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 $49.99
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 600W Power Supply $39.99 after rebate
HD: Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 7200.12 1TB SATA 32MB Cache $67.99
Case: Zalman Z9 Plus ATX Mid Tower Case Black, several case fans included $34.99 after rebate
Mouse/Keyboard: Logitech MK120 Desktop Keyboard and Mouse Combo USB $14.99
Blu-Ray Drive: LITE-ON Black 4X BD-ROM 8X DVD-ROM 32X CD-ROM SATA Internal 4X Blu-ray Reader $25.99
Webcam: HP HD-3110 Autofocus 720p 30FPS Widescreen Webcam $11.99
OS: Linux trololol (psst.. you can still run Windows like everyone else does, I won't tell anyone) $0.00

Total: $577.89

This is over the budget of $500, but it's a good system for the price. The CPU and GPU are very overclock friendly, and the PSU can handle it.

Downgrading to 4GB DDR3 RAM and a 500GB HD is about $45 cheaper, and getting rid of the blu-ray drive and webcam is $38 cheaper. The "cheaper" total is $494.91, under $500 for the same gaming performance provided the 4GB DDR3 doesn't come back to haunt you.

For an AMD GPU I'd look at trying to get a 7870 on sale for around $210-230.

Memory has always been a bottle neck when it comes to gaming. It's certainly not the only important component, but for the PS3 it was the limiting factor in many cases and one of the reasons the system got inferior ports.

Hopefully we'll see more stable framerates and less screen tearing next-gen, but most genres will still be 30 FPS on consoles.

It's promising that Sony has been working closely with developers on the PS4, which is probably the main reason why they went with 8GB.

It's going to be either 720p 60fps or 1080p 30fps for the majority of games. I'd love 60fps but I'm not optimistic given how many 360 and PS3 games run at 30.

I'm pretty sure all games will be 1080p regardless of framerate. Moving games to the PS4 is fine with me if that means better image quality or more features. Why would wanting improved games make you a corporate shill? Isn't that something all gamers would like to have?

The irony of this RAM-mania is that even high end PC games running at 1080p only take up about 1.5gb of GDDR5 RAM. The only way you'll go over 2gb is if you run 1440p+ or run multiple monitors. Similarly, most PC games are still 32 bit and thus can't use much more than 1.3gb of DDR3 RAM, yet they still manage to run just fine. Only a handful of PC games like Crysis 2 and 3 have 64 bit executables.

With that in mind, I doubt going from 4gb to 8gb is going to improve framerates. It might improve pop-in, load times, texture quality, and give Sony more room for OS footprint, though.

I don't think you dudes understood my post. Sony fanbois are somehow thinking Killzone 4 is 30 fps because it was not made with 8GB DDR5 RAM in mind. In their fucked up Sony brains doubling the RAM automatically, in every game announced, doubles the framerate.

Yup, as I predicted, 8GB DDR5 = SPUs of the PS3.  sony fans cried endlessly last gen over how developers aren't fully utilizing the SPUs of the PS3 because otherwise CGI graphics at 1080p/60fps would have been possible.

Sfags are insane now holy shit. Yes, sony are going after "true" gamers with a c tier first person shooter, a Myst clone where you do Bioware door hacking puzzles to traverse an island, a new infamous game, a car game that seems to focus on everything but the gampelay, and four games that are going to be on every platform under the sun (Deep Down, Destiny, Diablo III which most of us have already invested hundreds of hours in almost a year ago, and Watch Dogs).

Thanks for looking out for us gamers Sony! These games are completely risky and treading the new ground.

Where the fuck is James Cameron? The bar needs to be raised again.

PS4's GPU is based on a Radeon 7850-7870 iirc, so it's not hard to believe MS went for something slightly more powerful. I still think they'll both look pretty much the same in the end. It's going to come down to exclusive games and features (or lack thereof). I doubt I'll be buying the next Xbox if it forces you to be online to use the console.

All the fanboy clamor is a massive waste of time and energy.

So for the initial reveal games, it will be games that have been made using 8GB DDR3 (Durango dev kits) vs games that had been made using 1.5GB GDDR5 for the PS4 (Orbis initial dev kits). Pretty interesting. Theoretically then, the Nextbox games should have more graphical flair.

This is correct. The alpha build of KZ4 was made with 4GB in mind, fast ram and very impressive.
