From what I remember of the rumors, MS went with DDR3 plus some esRAM and "move engines" that are supposed to assist with the bandwidth constraints.

If MS's solution costs less while providing "good enough" RAM width to run the console, rather than the pricey overkill of GDDR5, they could spend more of their budget on a better CPU/GPU and come out ahead in performance. That's assuming they didn't already blow their budget on cramming a Kinect 2 into every box. With that said, I still won't buy an Xbox 3 if it forces you to be online or forces Kinect.

I think Sony went with GDDR5 because they think that GPU compute stuff will take over the world.In other words the system is extremely GPU oriented(high bandwidth,high latency).
GDDR5 has about 400 cycle latency,DDR3 can be as low as 40 cycles.High latency is not a big problem for GPUs because of the nature of their work but on the other hand CPU absolutely hates high latency(again nature of the work).

Add this to the whole picture,one of the Orbis Vgleaks

50% higher latency would mean 600 cycles for PS4 memory.

Rango on the other hand seems to be complete opposite.

My humble opinion about more RAM

8GB RAM,

1.Easier to add features,but on the other that means higher CPU/GPU,streaming system,etc load...take the strongest PC CPU add 6 Titans,add infinite amount of RAM and start adding more and more features...you will bring the machine to its knees at some point.PS4 has 8 tablet CPU cores,btw(about 3mm^2 per core)
2.Easier to port.
3.More RAM for streaming cache is good but the problem is that you can't put the whole game in 8GB(ideal situation) so in the end you will be limited by streaming system performance.Another situation is to squeeze in whole level inside but then user will have to make sandwiches until 8GB fills up.
