Yeah I just read the article. That is pretty dumb if true if that's the only way to do it. I might as well just keep my 360 in the same area which is not what I want to do.

I would pay extra for one model that just had Backward compatibility all in one unit. I don't want two devices.

The benefit could/seems to be one hdmi cable, one power brick, one controller, etc. which isn't that bad of a compromise.

BC on next gen consoles sounds like a mess.  Even the Wii U that's the most straight forward requires additional hardware.

Yeah I just don't like the idea of buying two separate devices to get the functionality I would like out of one potentially. We'll see I guess. I'm sure retail will bundle them or something. I need to see what it looks like and how much it all costs.

Xbox Mini

The “Xbox Mini” is not a 360 add-on, it is a stand alone product that contains Xbox 360 functions for gaming, and alone it is meant to compete with Apple TV. Since it is likely it will not have a disc drive, it is being designed with “always online” in mind, and with internet being required for Live functions. Xbox 360 Games can be played on it by purchasing Games on Demand on Xbox Live (for new purchases) or if already purchased, simply download it. This also applies to music and movies. To further clarify, the Durango will also have these (TV) functions, just with next-genration gaming hardware instead of Xbox 360 at a higher price.

When used with Durango, it offers connectivity with it for backwards compatibility with both disc based and On Demand games, and it’s no more different than what Sony will be doing with Gaikai for playing PS3 games on PS4, only with Xbox it will be done locally and not through the cloud. You can control the Xbox Mini under a single interface and not have to worry about switching between devices in a single display input.

These connectivity functions cannot work with existing Xbox 360 units due to the difference in external interface. The Xbox Mini was designed for this along side Durango.

I really like the idea of addon BC, it's the most reasonable option Sony/MS have for BC since proper emulation of their old hardware isn't an option. I was wondering about the plausibility of having a small box with the key components of the old console which connects to the new ones and hey, here MS have done it.

If it's done gracefully integrating old content into the new UI (as the leak says) then it's worth it vs keeping the old console. If it just booted into X360 MODE like WiiU and Wii that wouldn't be so great. Far better option than Gaikai, the amount of digital content I have on PS3 I would buy an addition to PS4 to integrate all that in a heartbeat

I would think that a lowly employee is representing his own views (though, in this case, no doubt he was actually typing what he though MS wanted him to) and is not speaking for a $200 billion dollar corporation--which is a separate entity from its fucking shareholders or directors, never mind some creative director. Hsu's view, tempered, may be fine for those--like officers, directors, or politicians*--who posses control to create and enforce policy or those who are specifically hired to represent their employer--spokesmen or marketing people--but otherwise it's bullshit and gives employers far more power than they should posses over their employees.

*I'm aware that these three groups are generally not considered "employees."

He was acknowledging the reporting/attitude towards the idea of the "unrevealed feature," which is already used by various PC games. It's not like he wrote, "hey can't wait for the next XBOX; I foresee that it will be ALWAYS ON when I get home." He disclosed his opinion on the feature.

I feel bad for Adam Orth, but what he did was really, really dumb.  And if it turns out the Durango doesn't require online?  Even more dumb.  It's like, hey, Adam, see how when game journos contact MS about something unconfirmed the answer is always "Microsoft does not comment on rumours or speculation"?  You need to keep that in mind if you want to have a public twitter that proudly displays that you work at Microsoft, no matter where you are on the totem pole. 

In the happy world of sunshine, I wish he could have kept his job, but in reality, if I'm his boss at Microsoft, I'd be pretty eager to get rid of him even outside the PR ramifications of distancing the company from him.

We're told Ryse is designed to be Microsoft's new Gears of War / Halo mega launch title. It's set in the roman empire period and uses deep Kinect integration to allow players to slash and kick at enemies. We understand that Ryse will take advantage of the new body tracking improvements in the next Kinect sensor. Ryse is part of four major launch titles for the next-generation Xbox. Sources tell us that a new Forza title with "super life-like" graphics will also be made available at launch, alongside a zombie game and a family game set on an island with Pixar movie-style graphics. We're told that the family game will utilize Kinect to scan a body and generate a virtual character in the game.
