How about just waiting until the official announcement instead of being used as puppets based on the weekly rumour.

Is MS really does block used games, they're fucked.
You think so? I feel like the average consumer would just buy it and be like :wtf later.

The lack of used games clearly arent the sales deterrent people think they are, look at the PC market.

:manny

Uh.  PC games sell because they're cheap really quickly.  You seriously think that's gonna be the case on the NextBox?  GTFO.

I think he means steam is popular despite the lack of used games. He has a point. But PC has never really been much of an infrastructure for the used game market so his point is moot. However the console market? I've always lent out games to borrow and rented console games now and then. By contrast I've never done the same on PC.

No store has let you return or buy used PC games except mom and pop shops for a minute. Stores don't do that with consoles. So you'd be fucking up 30+ years of something people have never had to worry about in a console system. Bringing up PC in regards to used game sales is like bringing up a gaffer losing their virginity. Both are rare and it isn't like stores sell or buy the product anyways.

PC versions of console games go cheap quickly because often they're a free "bonus" to the console development. Most publishers just take the Xbox 360 version and outsource a quick port for what's basically free money.

That wouldn't be the case on a console, so prices won't drop as quickly.

MS should leave DRM up to the publishers.

When is that big reveal supposed to be again? They pushed it back to May?

Quote
Fable developer Lionhead has a new boss.

John Needham is the new head of the Guidford-based studio, owner Microsoft announced.

Needham used to be CEO of City of Heroes maker Cryptic Studios and Marvel Heroes maker Gazillion Entertainment. He's also worked at Sony Online Entertainment. All three studios make MMOs.

"John's deep understanding of all aspects of the gaming industry, from subscription-based, massively multi-player to client-based console and free-to-play online, PC and mobile experiences, will be a huge benefit to Lionhead and European Studio operations more widely," Microsoft said.

Needham reports to Phil Harrison, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business for the EMEA territory (that includes us).

"This is a historic time in our industry and I'm excited, and honoured, to be joining Lionhead and Microsoft Studios," Needham said.

"Our vision is focused on building innovative gaming services and AAA experiences at Lionhead, and the rest of Microsoft Studios, which take advantage of Microsoft's incredible hardware and software platforms. Personally, I can't wait to get started."

Harrison added: "It's my pleasure to welcome John Needham to Microsoft Studios and Lionhead. He brings a wealth of proven executive leadership experience in the online gaming space to the company and I know he will confidently lead Lionhead towards an ambitious online future."

All this talk of Lionhead's online future makes sense in the context of recent reports about its next game.

In May 2012 Eurogamer brought you the news that Lionhead was making an MMO-like role-playing game for the next Xbox.

According to job advertisements, the new game has single-player and multiplayer elements with four-player co-op, and is a new IP.

"This is to assist in the development of a major brand new IP that is being targeted for the future generation of platforms and will be an RPG based game with a radical new take on how co-operative and multiplayer gameplay feeds into the experience, while blending online and single-player into one complete experience," read the advertisement.

The development team size was said to be 150+.

ok, so we've annihilated MS.

which things do you think will turn out to be over-promised on the PS4?   I think they said something about the system recording all gameplay, which you cut from with the share button?  Did I hear that correctly?  Cause that would be my vote for something probably not exactly working the way it was presented.

Don't they have a software emulator for the PS3? If Gaikai doesn't live up to its promise (which I don't expect it will, or can) they could always fall back on client side emulation, right?

Oh, I got that part. The problem with the Vita/PS3 emulators is that they are written for a different CPU architecture. It's possible to port them, but it requires some work. I expect Sony to focus on Gaikai BC near launch and then go back to traditional emulators when they realize it's the better solution.

If it ever works right come launch, that is. Gaikai seems like a much bigger headache to me since there are issues outside their control, the biggest of which is infrastructure.

yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's just for PSN versions for PS1/2 games.  I'd like to see a PSP emulator, too.  iirc the Vita emulates PSP games and there's no reason the PS4 shouldn't be able to.

And yeah, I question how much of what Sony showed will be there at launch.  Betting that none of the Vita functionality will be working at first.

If they want to stay in the handheld business then it makes sense for them to keep the PSP games as handheld exclusives. It increases the incentive for people to pick up a Vita.

Gaikai is useless.

it might be for a while, but it was a pretty forward thinking acquisition.  they probably did a cost/benefit on how much it would cost to acquire a failing company that already did basic R+D vs. their own R+D and got in early.

that shit will work perfectly in country's with real internet though and fios/google fiber areas of the states.

Nah, the PS3 looked awesome at its first reveal.  Way more awesome than the PS4, imo.  It didn't start looking insane until the precise moment Kaz said five hundred and ninety-nine US dollars.

And I still think Sony is holding back some bad news on the used game front.  Way too early for Sonytards to be guffawing at Xbots over that one.

you thought that presentation was good up until the price?   Should probably go rewatch that and re-experience the boredom and barely believable claims (1080p 60fps lol)

literally the best thing going for it was speculation that all the major Japanese PS2 franchises would stay exclusive to the PS3 and that the next FF and Metal Gear were gonna come out pretty soon and be sex on a disc.

PS3 (pre-E3 2006) was built on good will / hype from the PS2 and lies.  And lies.  And lies.  And lies.  And lies.  And lies.  And lies.  Hindsight and all, but the PS4 reveal is looking closer to the 360's.  People were pretty underwhelmed with perfect dark footage, like they are with killzone 4.

and as the grooch said, if these xbox3 rumors turn out true, it doesn't absolve the ps4 of anything.  Always online and blocking used sales is possible on the PS3, just without whatever streamlined infrastructure or system-wide implementation these coming consoles might use.  If there is an advantage to the PS4, it's that not all games will be affected, but if we're talking the next big EA or Ubisoft game, I can't see a scenario where it's not happening on the PS4 as well.

The PS3 reveal wasn't the one that contained the price.  And sure, it was boring to watch the whole presentation, like these things always are, and they went back on a lot of stuff later (they always do), but at the time, sans price, knowing how closely they had made good on the ridiculous promises of the PS2?  Sure, I was stoked, and quite sure they would handily win the gen.

The PS4 reveal, on the other hand, while not bad, was kind of boring.  Here's an updated box, here's updated sequels to games no one cares about, here's a bunch of social network shit.

I see now.  hey, maybe the boringness was because they stuck closer to the truth this time?  We'll see the result this year, thankfully.  if it all falls apart PS3 style, it'll be funny.

Man, do you remember what the I/O panel looked like on the PS3 the first time they showed it? Dual HDMI-out :drool I'm with you, PS3 hype was soaring before reality set in with that price announcement at E3. I wonder if Sony can close the deal this time.

Something I keep wondering as we get closer to Microsoft's conference is why is it that so many people want to see them fail? They lost this generation despite 360's popularity in the west. Why root for their continued loss? Wouldn't it make more sense for Microsoft to take the lessons they learned from this gen and come into next gen from a different angle? I dunno, Microsoft is in a position to really prove themselves and that alone makes me more interested in what they might do, regardless of whether their target audience is "hardcore gamers".

there are enough arbitrary criteria out there for every system to fail, so i imagine that is very gratifying. Then again, most products of any type 'fail' but occasional hits like the PS2 or Windows 95 or the Wii keep the boats afloat

rumors for both say that's how it'll be, only with more happening behind the scenes.  at least, I want to believe these companies are somewhat capable and are designing these consoles around these new ideas.  probably not.  but maybe dlc can be on qr codes scanned in through mandatory kinect and sonynatal!

Another rumor

Quote
Maybe since Pastebin counts as a legitimate source for Durango rumors now, I guess I might as well shoot down some of the ridiculousness out there, even if my credibility doesn't count for squat here. For what it's worth, I worked for a recently shuttered developer, working on the early stages of a next-gen PS4/Vita/Durango/PC downloadable project that will never see the light of day.

But with no way of proving that without risking my name and ability to get another job in this industry, it's probably irrelevant. You can choose whether or not to believe any of the following. But I will say this... Anyone notice how VGleaks posted a "rumor" about the Xbox 360 mini, that claimed that by attaching it to Durango, it would enable backwards compatibility? Anyone notice how they followed that up with a posting from Pastebin, claiming that the Durango itself would have backwards compatibility?

Don't fool yourselves. It's because both are wildly inaccurate, which should be obvious, considering their contradictory nature.

The truth is somewhere in between and a lot close to what the "bigger" sites out there are reporting.

First of all, the "mini" is real, although that name is nothing I've ever heard. It's a just a slimmed down 360, minus the disc drive, and nothing more. There is no point in Microsoft splintering the market by including something in the mini that the vanilla 360 doesn't have. The "mini" will release sometimes this fall, alongside a price drop and redesign on standard 360s. The mini will be replacing the hard drive-free 360, so as to avoid market confusion with too many varying SKUs with differing capabilities/features. The "mini" will supposedly have a few new features the CURRENT 360s don't have, but those features will be delivered via a dashboard update that applies to ALL 360s, not just the mini SKU. One of these features, is background downloading of games. Similar to Sony, Microsoft is pushing for games that download in segments, to get a user playing as soon as possible. Instead of being limited to the next-gen Xbox, where it's a requirement, it's being encouraged (but not mandated) for the current systems. Things like better download list management are also included, making it easier to compare what is and isn't currently installed on the system.

As for Durango, much of what Kotaku has reported lately is accurate. It requires a constant connection to play Durango games in an effort to cut down on piracy, and eliminate used games. The internet connection is not required for anything but Durango-specific games. Basic features, including 360 games, work with or without it. Yes, it is backwards compatible out of the box.

Known already, is that games are installed to the HDD. Plenty of sites have reported it, because it's true. As a result of this, and the always-on requirement, games can now be played without the disc in the drive. There is another reason behind that. Games can now be downloaded from XBLM for free, in addition to being installed from disc, once the retail disc is activated on your account. The disc is basically just for installation and activation purposes. In addition to that, developers are being told that a month of Xbox Live Gold is automatically applied to a user's account, once any new game is installed. This is essentially Microsoft's answer to calls for a free Xbox Live service while softening the blow of eliminating the used market. If you buy a lot of games, Xbox Live basically becomes free. Live subscriptions will remain available separately as well though.

Everything I'm aware of has pointed to that being the finalized approach Microsoft has taken. As of about a month ago, it was all accurate, although, bear in mind, things could have changed since then.

A few other things of note:

1. The 360-related hardware included in Durango which drives backwards compatibility is not available to developers. It's re-purposed for the OS while a Durango game is running, leaving the majority of Durango's power in the hands of developers. Essentially, anything that can be done in the dashboard of the current 360 can be done while playing a Durango game. While in backwards compatibility mode, functions are limited to those of the 360 in-game dashboard. It's supposed to provide an environment identical to that of the 360, for compatibility reasons, although some non-game Durango-specific features, like an in-game browser, can run on top of that.

2. The controller is fairly similar to the 360 controller. The d-pad is improved (although I can't notice much of a difference myself since I never needed to use the 360 d-pad much to begin with). It's a bit less bulky as well. It's a bit closer to the PS4's controller in size, but is still very close to the design of the 360 controller. Personally, I think it's their best controller yet.

3. Achievements are making a return, obviously, but with some tweaks. Games now come with two distinct scores. Arcade games are now set at 500, with 500 additional points for DLC, while full games remain at 1000, with an additional 1000 for DLC. Now a user's score list is now represented by two base scores for each game, on for the main game, and the other for DLC, as opposed to having them combined as they currently are.

Dumb. "Hai brehs, check out my DLC score!!" ...no one will say ever.  ::)

Edit: N/M, after reading it again, it sounds like it just tells you how many points you have on the main game and how many you have on the DLC when you look at specific games.

That's pretty brilliant if true

The brilliant thing would be

Internet required

New games--activation only, can be played offline
Used games--constant internet connection required

Kinda like when you want to use your account on different  360.

ya.  Always on scares me though.  If a game stops because my internet goes out momentarily I'm not buying this thing.

It's no secret that publishers hate used games more than piracy.

Maxy in the anger stage of grief. :P

Just for extra trolling MS isn't going to reveal whether the next box is "always online" or not.
