Complacent Nintendo is something we saw with Iwata but Nintendo leadership since seems to be more cognizant of the traps of thinking Wii Fit and Wii Music is enough.

I'm still convinced that if 1-2 Switch wasn't forgotten while BOTW, SMO and Splatoon 2 did gangbusters we'd see more of the dumb shit. Ringfit ended up a success it seems but Labo not really doing much made them realize "these people actually want videogames and not to check their BMI's daily, huh"
They fixed it by having dedicated teams for their not-game shit. The problem with the Wii era especially was that they had the core teams work on it and cancelled or changed the direction of titles late in development that did not fit that casual profile (Project HAMMER, Kid Icarus Wii, Pilotwings Wii) to bolster their casual line-up. So you got dumb shit like Link's Crossbow Training because that was some asset flip they could do without putting the production of the next Zelda title in jeopardy or in the case like Project HAMMER it didn't work as a casual title and was cancelled. Some developers didn't like this sudden shift to making a quick buck with waggle and left causing more problems.
Nintendo quickly changed their approach leading to a stacked line-up of Donkey Kong, Metroid: Other M and more, but by then the damage had already been done.

It's kinda funny that MS proceeded to do the same thing for their Kinect line-up. Put a real sequel to Fable on the backburner, gutted Rare and cancelled Perfect Dark, Kameo, Crackdown and PGR sequels.
In the case of Microsoft though the damage went further as it burned their second and third party relationships with the likes of Itagaki and left a gaping hole in their first party line-up for a decade.

I'll be honest, I got to play Project HAMMER at E3 2006 during the whole Wii unveil and it seemed like your generic C+-tier action game at that stage. I understand people were desperate for "hardcore" games during the whole post-2008 lull for the platform, but if the game actually came out I assure you it would've been forgotten pretty quickly.

I'll also be honest and say I had a blast with Link's Crossbow Training as a quick casual lightgun score-attack game.

Switch right now is that awesome cross-section between Nintendo first-party exclusives, indies galore, Japanese 3rd parties (with some exclusives of their own), and "gamier" western games. It's got the most fleshed out console lineup of a Nintendo console since the SNES. Every genre is represented in force, even ones not normally associated with Nintendo like western RPG (which hasn't really existed on Nintendo since SNES to my knowledge) and open world.

Chillingly accurate except I think you got Budokai and Tenkaichi confused; Wii and PS2 got Tenkaichi 3 and the Wii version was pretty good (I feel like the game overall was a step down from Tenkaichi 2, a Wii launch title/port.)

also iirc uncharted 4 is one of the best selling games on ps4 and did huge numbers

That 2nd week drop is straight from the sales tracker though, so it's accurate information.
It's towards the higher end of the average 2nd week drop especially for huge titles though, nothing exactly surprising.

Nintendo posts five-fold profit jump as Animal Crossing sales top 22 million

:miyamoto :preach :money :rash :success :dice :trumps :birb

Quote
Nintendo has proved a winner of the pandemic as stuck-at-home gamers flock to titles like “Animal Crossing”, which sold 10.6 million units in the first quarter, bringing its total sales to 22.4 million since launching in March.

Quote
Nintendo sold 5.7 million Switch units in the first quarter, composed of 3 million of its hybrid home/portable Switch console plus 2.6 million units of the portable-only Switch Lite, which went on sale last September.
Quote
“The numbers are even more impressive when you consider that throughout the entire quarter, the Switch was hard to get in all major markets,” said Serkan Toto, founder of game industry consultancy Kantan Games.

https://www.gamesradar.com/animal-crossing-new-horizons-is-the-series-best-selling-entry-with-26-million-copies-shifted/

New Horizons (26 mil) has more than doubled New Leaf's total sales (12.8 mil.) And New Leaf was the previous high watermark for the series.

It took New Leaf seven years to hit that number. It's been basically seven months since New Horizons released.

ACNH is on course to beat MK8 Deluxe to become the best-selling Switch game.

Imagine back in 2001/2002 when the first Animal Crossing was being translated for America, you told Treehouse that one day an Animal Crossing game would (likely) become the best-selling game on its console... they probably wouldn't believe you. No one really expected the first game to do all that well in America (but it ended up surprising, and convincing the higher-ups to invest more in the series.)

Nintendo sold over 730k Switches in October.  :whoo

US or WW?

Edit- Just US, holy shit.

Quote
With growth of 136% when compared to the same month in 2019, the Nintendo Switch family of systems saw its strongest October sales yet, with more than 735,000 units sold between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite in the U.S. According to numbers provided by NPD, the October 2020 sales of Nintendo Switch are the second-highest October sales of any video game console in history, only outdone by the 807,000 units sold of the Wii system in October 2008.

October continues a record-setting streak for Nintendo Switch as the best-selling video game console for 23 consecutive months – the most months in a row for any video game console since NPD started tracking sales numbers. To date, Nintendo Switch has sold more than 22.5 million units in the U.S., according to NPD. And according to internal Nintendo data, Nintendo Switch has sold-in more than 63 million units worldwide.

Nintendo can hardly keep up with demand as is, but I imagine the Switch Lite and Switch would shoot into the stratosphere if they dropped prices of the existing models and introduced a new Switch 4k or Pro at $349 - $399.

$199 Switch
$299 Switch Pro

I need a Reggie version of :trumps

Anyways yeah, whenever the Lite in particular drops to the DS's launch price ($149), that's the big sweet spot.

If there's enough stock, I could see Switch Pro picking up sales if Series X and PS5 can't metaphorically stay on shelves.

If Switch Pro is real I'm drooling at the thought of a 60fps performance mode for Animal Crossing. :drool

The previous two console AC's were 60fps while the handheld entries were 30fps, until NH. Switch Pro + 60fps AC would rectify this.

I'm not expecting much, because I'm honestly pretty content with my current Switch (it could honestly be the last video game system I ever buy and I wouldn't care as long as software/online support is still there.)

Hyrule Warriors Age Of Calamity sold three million+ copies already.  Best launch sales for a musou game ever.

Koei Tecmo reveals (via Famitsu) that this sales total already makes Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity the best-selling Warriors game of all time, outselling lifetime totals achieved by the likes of Dynasty Warriors, Dragon Quest Warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors, and the previous Hyrule Warriors games in a matter of days.
