episode!!

spoiler (click to show/hide)
they did a real good job of showing Tyrion's plotting. It was something i remember having a hard time following in the book.
i didn't like the Shae/Sansa scene
Man that scene with Theon burning the letter? that was great.
I liked all the stuff with Renly. I finally know how to pronounce Brienne. However FUCK how they pronounce Margaery. I pronounce it Mar-gary. Not Mar-jary. Also found it weird that they're adding more to her character. I guess it's because they will likely be removing characters later on and she will fill that gap.
love how they are capping the episode with Arya!
[close]

what i like most about this is that they're are managing to move through the story pretty quickly yet it feels like the pace is slow. scenes never feel rushed as well.

Yeah tonight's episode was awesome.  The last Arya portion was :o

And yeah, aren't they technically already through like half of the book?  Kinda want them to start with some SoS stuff.

Yeah the entire Greyjoy family and Iron Islands stuff is the most intriguing to me at this juncture.  All the Greyjoy actors are great.

Episode was ok, the actress they got for Brienne is perfectly cast.

Highlights per the usual were anything Tyrion related.

Yeeeeeeah.  Apparently she got "discovered" in Europe, did some mainstream movie over there, and won an award for it.  Whereupon it was discovered that she used to, uh, yeah.

Yea, cheggit had a great torrent with all her hardcore scenes compiled. The Great Hard Drive Crash of 2011 was a sad day for me, especially because that site has since shut down.

The fight choreography is greatly improved in this season. From the Hound's battle in ep1 to the melee and final skirmish (well, "battle" according to Hot Pie), the movement looks far more fluid than the rather slow fighting shown throughout S1 (especially the Ned v Jamie battle). The Night's Watch ambush actually reminded me of the mountain ambush in S1 to some degrees; I thought that was the best fight scene in the first season, and tonight was like an even better version. Yoren was kicking major ass

Pretty much nails it. The sex/nudity is pretty childish, and insulting in the sense that clearly the writers don't trust viewers with any information unless someone is having sex or naked in the scene.

and it's working!
Quote
The third episode of fantasy drama Game of Thrones’ sophomore season held its ground, holding steady with 3.8 million total viewers at 9 p.m. and adding 776,000 additional viewers with an encore broadcast at 11 p.m.

Sunday’s numbers were on par with last week’s impressive 97 percent retention rate from the Season 2 bow of the series, which has already been renewed for a third season.

As a book reader, this season is letting me down.

:/

Tell me about it.  I really did not like this episode.  I cannot believe some of the changes and how they are fucking things up.  I feel like each ep is taking more and more liberties this season and I'm worried about how different the series will end up in plot than the books by the end.

Reading book 2 I really really liked Renly/Stannis so everything Renly/Stannis related has been a disappointment: (spoilers for this season if you haven't read the book)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
-The scene where Stannis/Renly meet in the fields is one of the best scenes in the book.  The tone in the TV version is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.  In the Book Renly is jolly and isn't really taking it seriously.  Like they're going to be play fighting and no one is actually going to die.  He's still acting like a brother playing kings and robbers and not like a king.  Meanwhile Stannis is totally rigid and wise and the way they play off each other is incredibly good in the book.  Then the scene at the end where Renly reaches for something and Stannis is about to draw his sword thinking Renly is going for a weapon and Renly throws him an apple as a friendly brotherly gesture and gives a little quirp about it.  This is important because later on there's a scene with Stannis where he's holding the apple, staring at it, and it shows how conflicted he is and saddened by the loss of his brother that he really deep down didn't want killed because he was still blood related.  Not only in the TV version is Renly kind of serious and a jerk, but THEY LEFT OUT THE APPLE SCENE OMFG#$@%%@%.  I feel like the writers of the TV version just DON'T GET Renly's character.  He's a jolly charismatic fellow, but very green and foolish in war.  There's this fun likeable aspect of him that I feel is missing in this version.
-Also wtf is up with everyone in westeros knowing Renly is gay.
-Robb scene.  This is awkward because everything they do with Robb is basically fan fiction and could end up badly.  Is the medic girl supposed to be the same one from later in the series?  If so, that sort of fucks up the story of how he met her
-Arya stuff.  I'm a little vague on this, but weren't they supposed to have escaped at the Yoren part and snuck along the river and saw the dead bodies hanging and torturing from across the river.  Then Gendry gets caught and she goes to rescue him and gets caught too?  After screwing up the burning castle fight last ep, it definitely seems like they're going to truncate her adventure because it's really long in the book.
-Everything Storm's End is getting weird.  They've never mentioned Storms End in the show, they haven't shown the castle.  The whole SHADOW BABY thing is supposed to be after Renly's death and AFTER the guardian of the castle defies Stannis and THEN shadow baby.  There's also the whole subplot of how Stannis was always supposed to have Storms End but he didn't get it so he feels strongly about taking Storms End.  Also the subplot about the boy being raised at Storms End.  By doing the Shadow Baby now it seems...like they're going to have it kill Renly and then just skip Storms End entirely as Stannis takes Renly's army in.  Which is cutting really good material.
[close]

What I liked about this ep was:
-Qarth stuff was pretty good
-Tyrion is good as always
-I can kind of forgive the added scene with littlefinger x margery (again, spoilers for the season)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
because it sets up the later deal with highgarden;  though the Renly scene was whatever
[close]

I wouldn't mind them adding so much new material if they weren't cutting so much book material at the same time.  The new scenes just feeling like wasting time when they have so much book stuff to cover.  S1 seemed far more accurate.

Also kind of an aside, but Davos has like 4 sons in the book.  Now he only has 1?  What?  Why even make that change.

Well from the line(from Yoren?) about crossbows taking too long to load combined with all the emphasis on Joffery and his crossbow fiddling, I kind of suspect he'll get sliced while trying to crank up his little toy.

I liked the episode a lot more on the second viewing. My initial reaction was mainly due to a couple scenes: the "Talisa"/Robb one, and the abrupt confrontation between Renly and Stannis. I'll wait and see how the Robb stuff plays out before complaining any more. In terms of the Renly/Stannis scene, it happened out of nowhere which was odd; the arrival of Stannis was a rather big deal in the book, and while I'm fine with the scenery changes it just came off weird. And the interaction...eh. I was hoping for the peach (or apple) scene to be included, it's such a great moment. Some people have complained about Renly but I like the performance here. He comes off as quite the charismatic fool.

I loved everything that involved Tyrion; Dinklage is really owning every scene this season. And Joffery...wow. I can't be the only person who expected something...else to happen when he handed Ros that rod; glad I was wrong lol

All the Arya stuff was great. I love The Tickler, great performance. I also like the change with Tywin at Harenhel instead of you-know-who.

Not a fan of any of the Quarth stuff at all. The city looks great, but that scene felt like some cheesy Sci-Fi channel special. It makes sense that Dany would be rather awkward when confronted by high class nobles, but the scene just came off rather choppy due to Clarke's delivery, and the Xaro intervention was just weird to me, bah.

Um because why waste money hiring 4 actors when you can just hire one? It makes perfect sense, and tbh his sons don't do much in the book. Compacting them into one character is easier. I like the actor who's playing him as well.

The show is an adaptation. A direct 1:1 copy would not work on television, just as a 1:1 copy of LOTR wouldn't work on film. As such I'm fine with changes and can easily separate the show from the book. I only ask that the general spirit of the characters, and story, be handled faithfully. I'm not a fan of what the show has done to Littlefinger for instance, but that's really the only character problem I have. In terms of tonight's ep, I didn't like what they did with Robb and "Talisa" at all. It's not hard to guess where it's going, but even still...bleh.

Some folks are upset Stannis isn't as stern in the show. Eh personally I like this Stannis. I could see Stannis having a somewhat warm, friendly conversation with Davos; it's not like they were drinking and banging whores.

complaints

from reading a lot of your complaints, you seen to just not went them to change anything at all, ever.

the changes all make sense in the context of turning a 1000+page book into a 10 episode series. things were going to have to change, everyone knew that.

you might as well stop watching because as this show keeps going forward it's only going to get more and more different.

I don't like this at all, in the books Arya only glimpsed Lord Tywin from afar and when the time came to claim her deaths she only choose the people that where directly affecting her, it will be hard for me to buy that she won't name his brother's most dangerous adversary while she interacts with him everyday.

I also have the same problem as Beb with the added scenes, 99% of them are garbage and I would rather they would have spent those minutes they wasted with yet another Ros scene( I guess she gives great head) into making the parley scene...good.

And this Asha fucking SUCKS! I can't believe they turned one of my favorite characters into an ugly unfunny tomboy.
