Much better ep than last time, although I keep thinking that the Danny/Qarth stuff should be the B plot, not the stuff they end with.

Awesome seeing the Winterfell team leaving though. Got hyped by that. Glad Osha is still loyal to Bran, they have a great dynamic.

I think all the stuff with Dany has been kinda lame. Not because it's different from the books but because it's just silly. The stuff with her this season is better on paper than it is live action.

Yeah. They've made Xaro out to be a much bigger character when really he's completely boring compared to the rest of Qarth and he was kinda gay in the novels so, again, do not understand.

A lot of the changes they're making have me thinking they're aiming for condensing a bunch of stuff for the coming seasons, which makes no sense if they're going to keep following the books at all as Martin will REALLY never finish 6 by the time they're ready to do it if that's the case.

How can anyone whose read the books be fine with Theon's arc.  It's so butchered up, it's a surprise it's even comprehensible.  I doubt there's one person watching the TV show who feels sorry for Theon because they've failed to develop him at all in the show.

Book 7 and the final season will come out at the same time, probably.

by the time they finish Season 4 (ASOS), book 6 might be out.  And then by the time they do Season 5 (AFFC), Season 6 (ADWD), Season 7 (Book 6 part 1?), Season 8 (Book 6 part 2?), book 7 could be out and then Season 9/10 could cover it and finish around the same time.  If he can do book 6 & 7 in about 4 years each, the above schedule should work and from what I've read the only reason Books 4/5 took so long was that they were the boring parts of the story so he was bored writing them and it took longer.  Book 6/7 should be faster plus the TV show being a huge hit will probably motivate him (HBO's money pushing) to move a little faster to finish up 6/7 to time it with the show.

WTF  Book 2 is (BOOK SPOILERS)

spoiler (click to show/hide)
ALL ABOUT THEON BEING THE VICTIM.

He wants to be Robb's buddy, he wants to be part of the Starks and do the right thing and he goes to his Dad with a plan and they turn it all against him and he realizes he is FUCKED and he tries to make the best of it, tries to take Winterfell but be a good fair king and make his father proud while not hurting the people in the north that he cares about more than he has to and he gets FUCKED by Bolton's Bastard and loses everything.  His story is incredibly depressing and Martin makes him into a total grey area character who is neither good, nor bad.  He's just a fool, an idealistic fool and a dreamer with aspirations too grand and unrealistic and it gets him destroyed.  The whole book 2 creates this feeling with his character that you KNOW he's going to get fucked and you feel bad for what's going on and how his life was turned upside down.

You don't get any of that in the TV version.  He's just a prick and a joke character whose going to get owned.

I never gave a shit about Theon until he got imprisoned by Bolton's bastard and flayed and shit.  Ultimately, he is a selfish prick idiot and all of his unfortunate choices were still HIS CHOICES.

Then again, it's been probably close to 8 years or so since I've read the 2nd book, but I don't remember Theon being a main focus of it whatsoever.  He's always been a supporting character in my opinion, and barely more well developed and tolerable than Sansa.

I thought the episode was good, but there were more than a few questionable writing decisions imo - some of which are book related, some of which aren't. The abrupt Winterfell sacking was rather puzzling to me, first off. I had thought Theon would have a few men start sieging Torrhen Square while he walked into Winterfell easily. The episode throws you immediately into the situation with no set up, and it felt rather odd/rushed. Still, overall I thought it was a good scene. And the beheading, damn. I'm fine with the change, it worked well.

The beyond-the-Wall scenes were good, I just felt odd about the Ygritte changes. Sure the ambush was awesome, I like the actress, the Halfhand is great etc. But [ACOK]
spoiler (click to show/hide)
What's the point in having Jon run off with Ygritte? Also from a writing perspective, it makes no sense that the Halfhand would simply leave Jon alone with her and not even watch from afar, or note how long the whole thing took. And another thing...the whole "Jon sleeping with his head on a rock in below zero temperatures" thing was just weird, but that's kind of nitpicky. So I'm guessing Jon will be captured by Wildlings, they'll throw him in a cell with the Halfhand, and he'll demand Jon kill him in order to infiltrate them. I guess I'm cool with that.
[close]

The scene that really bothered me was the Arya one with Hagar/Loche. It felt completely unnecessary and trivializes the nature of her relationship with Hagar. And how unrealistic is it that a commanding officer would have to chase a servant through camp and not a single soldier would stop her? Once again, weird writing decisions.

And of course Dany...eh? It certainly makes sense that someone would attempt to steal her dragons, so I can't really complain about that; in fact I always wondered why that didn't happen as I read ACOK. I'm super bummed about Irri dying, come the fuck on. And also, I'm tired of Xaro's story. We get it, it doesn't need to be repeated in every episode.

Solid ep. I loved the King's Landing stuff, even the Shae appearance. The Hound being a boss, Tyrion slapping the shit out of Joffery, that peasant zombie attack lmao, good shit

I'm honestly not upset about the way the show is making itself different from the books.  They're both still going in the same direction, they're just taking different ways to get there.

And really, if the show was EXACTLY like the novels, we'd still be sorting through boring shit from the first book.  It gives me a reason to watch and still be interested.

I'm still a fan just as much as you guys (I'm going to play the game, FFS), but you all would be bitching just as hard if the show and the books were identical.  And you probably would lose interest.

Just be happy, try to enjoy what they're doing with it, don't think too much about it, and if that doesn't work: THINK OF ALL THE MAGNIFICENT TIT-TAYS WE HAVE SEEN BECAUSE OF THIS SHOW.
WTF
