And I completely fucking disagree. Way to just call me factually wrong, though. I was way, way more impressed by the non-battle scenes in this episode than the overall battle. Lena Headey deserves an Emmy.

So, wait, after Joffrey goes back to the red keep or crying to his room or whatever, Tyrion tells some fancy armored guy "You'll fight as the king's representative," or something.

Later, that same armored guy is the one who cut Tyrion's face, isn't he?

Yes, it was a member of the King's Guard (Ser Meryn). He was the knight who regularly beat Sansa, and Tyrion threatened a few episodes ago

Ah, so do you think he was operating on his own, getting revenge for being embarrassed, or has Cersei instructed him to bring down Tyrion if an opportunity presented itself?

Hmm there's some debate on who did the deed. In the book it's not Ser Meryn, it's another knight who I thought had not been included in the show (Ser Mandon Moore). But folks on GAF are saying Moore is the one who sliced Tyrion tonight; he was the knight who reported to Cersei the news of a group of ladies attempting to steal horses from the stable.

I'll have to watch again. I figured they were just changing things from the book, since Moore had not appeared in previous episodes whereas Meryn was already established as an asshole who hated Tyrion

Episode was pretty much all that and a bag of chips.

Also, I would put zephyrfate on ignore cause it's obvious he is just trolling at this point (plus admitted to watching Spartacus as something other than a guilty pleasure) but for some reason ignore seems to have disappeared.

Perfect episode.

Best episode in the series and after a season of the TV being almost nothing like the book its adapting, having an episode where EVERYONE IS IN CHARACTER EVERY SINGLE SCENE was just really really awesome.  They didn't waste a second, every minute of those 50ish minutes was packed with content and all the major events from the battle were actually used (though for budget reasons they played out in different locations).  Directing was great, and the gore was a bit over the top but Marshall is a horror director with a history of gore, so it worked.  Why Tyrion cuts the guys leg off it was  :lol

I think the only issue is that because it felt like an ep for book readers without dumbing shit down, I feel like most tv viewers will be confused as to exactly what was happening.  But then I figure next ep they'll sit viewers down and explain what happened so it'll work out.  I also think certain scenes that I'm glad they DID will not have the impact they should because their arcs weren't developed like HOUNDxSANSA.

But if you look at the ep in a vacuum, it was perfect and I only wish the rest of the show was as faithful to the source material as this ep was.

Uh, the last season of Spartacus was one of the best seasons of TV out there, so... it's pretty much just you trolling.

Yeah there was a lot of confusion at the end for non-book readers. I didn't realize that was the white knight and his crew with Tywin, because I hadn't seen him in awhile and it just wouldn't make sense for him to join up with his exbfs sworn enemies.

It will feel kind of weird going back to all the other plots for just one final episode after already having the big episode.

for non book readers, the notion of "sword enemies" is something that should be dropped. Houses can align and realign at the drop of the hate in this world and only a few specifically are truly loyal.

I think showing Littlefinger at Renly's camp was a perfect setup for Loras and crew showing up to save Kings Landing. They didn't specifically say they were going to switch camps but it's implied enough so that when it happens you can recall back to the scene and nod your head.

seriously it was shit, groan inducing. especially after season 1 where it seemed so well written now you have literally everything that is wrong with writing in teh episode. plot twists you can see a mile away, a killer all of a sudden being a good guy for no real reason, daddy coming in at the end and saving the day.

You're referring to The Hound? It's been rather obvious he's been...interested in Sansa since S1. The book makes it more blatant perhaps, but nothing he did in Sansa's room was out of character

as i said earlier, they setup the Tyrell/Lannister union pretty well earlier in the season after Renly dies. I mean they even spell it out that half of Renly's banners went with Stannis. The scene with Magaery and Littlefinger should have made you think what the other half was going to do.

also you dont know what deus ex machina means.

is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly solved with the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object.

That exactly describes what happened at the end of the episode. A bunch of characters you wouldn't know unless you read the book because they all look the same other than Tywin, who did show suddenly and abruptly to save the day.  And even if they did set it up they did come all of a sudden which is exactly what a deus ex is. you lose

but what happened wasn't a new event, character, ability or object.

The Tyrell army, who was formally with Renly, aligned with the Lannisters after the death of Renly (as foreshadowed earlier in the season) and reached Kings Landing in time to save the city.

When you think back to what you saw in the season it all makes sense.

Now if you didn't like the fact that it happened just when the battle was seemingly lost, then that's just dramatic storytelling 101.

I thought it was rather obvious why The Hound left the battlefield, and ultimately quit Joffery. He wasn't going out there again with fire everywhere

In terms of the end, I suppose one could argue it was a LOTR-esque "the eagles are coming" moment. The show didn't do a good idea of explaining how Tywin got to the city in time because that part has completely been changed from the book. I don't think deus ex machina applies here: Tywin arrives in time to save the city. It's not a plot that came out of nowhere - Tywin left Harenhel (which is close to King's Landing) in the previous episode, and the Tyrell forces most likely met him outside of King's Landing.

book explanation for those that want it:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Robb comes up with a plan to flank Tywin's forces between his northern army and an army led by his uncle Edmure (Catelyn's little brother). Edmure fucks up the trap by attacking Tywin before Robb's army can get to the battle. While Tywin loses the battle, he manages to escape and then hears that Stannis is mere days from King's Landing. He leaves the battlefield and marches for King's Landing immediately at break neck speed, and is ultimately met by the Tyrell forces along the way.

Basically if Robb's uncle didn't fuck it up, the north could have destroyed Tywin's forces while Stannis successfully sacked King's Landing.

that IS the problem that it happened to a unresolved problem all of a sudden, it is the definition of a deus ex

so you just dont like that the show revealed the Tyrell/Lannister alliance at a pivotal dramatic point in the episode and not the fact that they were aligned in the first place?

sounds like a minor squabble on your part. if you can't get over that then you probably should stop watching the show.

The battle occurs from Davos and Tyrion's POVs in the book, so you don't really see much Stannis. He was on the battlefield in the novel commanding his forces, but I can't imagine him going up a ladder first lol. That seems more like something Robert or Robb Stark would do. He's badass in the book, just in other ways

he was pretty baller though, I liked it. I doubt his men would have reacted well if he just told them "alright, go take the city while I give out commands yo." In the show, he had to make that decision or face mutiny

One note that I was sort of bummed wasn't in the episode. When Stannis sees the Tyrell forces, most importantly a man in Renly's armor, it would have been cool if he whispered "Renly...?" in utter disbelief. In the book, the Stannis forces are routed in part because they flee, thinking Renly has risen from the dead. It turns out to be Loras Tyrell's brother Garland in the armor, who is considered one of the three men in the realm capable of holding their own against Jaime Lannister in a fight. Of course in the show, it's Loras in the armor which is fine since Garland hasn't been introduced

I think it's more confusing in the show because there wasn't enough fire (yeah he saw a guy run at him on fire and a few people on fire around him, but in the book it seemed the entire area outside the gate was on fire.  Like you would walk out the gate and all you would see is raging fire everywhere.  So when The Hound saw all that and went into shock and took off, it made more sense.  Should've set more stuff on fire in the foreground in the show.  But then some of the actors might have gotten burnt while trying to fight around it.

It also has the problem of a lot of other subplots in the series where they didn't do a good job developing and establishing his great fear of fire that's still with him from when he was burned as a kid.

There will be major plot development/twists. Last season's finale kind of just was the aftermath of ep9 while setting up for the next season; the big event of course was the Dany stuff at the end. This time there's more stuff to resolve, some of which will be big. It's a 70 minute episode

The show has made some big diversions from the book in terms of absent characters/areas which won't be addressed until next season apparently. We'll see. There's one scene in particular for next week that I can't imagine them having the budget for, given how expensive Blackwater was - so there will be major changes I'm guessing.

during last night, someone waved a torch with fire on it. he flinched.

later on when he's sent to the front, he says don't shoot those fire arrows at me or i will hang you by your intestines.

half of his face is burned.

he sees some guy running at him with full force on fire.
