Without spoiling what's coming next in the show, what exactly are the book purists complaining about?

The one thing I know is
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Arya killed the torturer guy.

You know, I could list 60+ scenes that were changed for the worse this season and yet I don't think that one you mentioned matters at all.  I have no idea why book fans cared about that change.

Because the scene involving those two later on is easily the best Arya moment in the books, and would be an Emmy-worthy scene for Maisie Williams.

There was more focus on Stannis when he had no men or ships. Now he has 200 ships and they're like "lol Stannis, who?" smh

Probably because that so far in the TV series, Stannis isn't as interesting as his brother was.

True, I'm not saying he needs more scenes. Just that it's odd that no one in King's Landing, or Tywin, seems to be saying preparing

I used to just imagine that scene playing out in the HBO series, with Maisie Williams saying those lines.

My imaginary version of that scene was enough to give me chills. And it will NEVER happen. Jesus, that's almost as depressing as tonight's Lakers loss.

They could still do the same exact same scene with a different person.

Tickler was just some common grunt on her list of death wishes which has several.  The dialogue will be slightly different, but you can still do a very similar scene.

He wasn't just a common grunt, she was repeating his words back to him, words that she had heard over and over and over again as he tortured people with them day after day and she was subjected to it. It's her ultimate moment of catharsis and what makes her character. It's never going to happen, and I HIGHLY doubt they'll find a suitable replacement.

smh.

I don't like what they are doing with Tywin, the producers seem to have forgotten that this is the same man that ordered the dead of two babies (one still on his mother's tit) to please his new king, sent three monsters to burn down the riverlands and is responsible for thousands of deads on that region, cause the extinction of two houses and since they call it extinction I assume he killed the children too.

Now he is telling personal stories to a highborn northern girl and even smiling for her, smfh.

Eh, even in the books I thought Tywin was a decent guy.  He does what needs to be done in order to keep people respecting and fearing the Lannister family name.  In the books he has scenes that show humanity, and he has scenes that show him making cruel, but intelligent, leadership decisions.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The backstory that his brother gives to Tyrion in ASOS about how Tywin's father was a joke and everyone stole from the Lannisters and made a laugh of them and how there was a lot of pressure on Tywin to turn it around and rebuild his family legacy, gives a lot of empathy for his character.

I think the TV version of him is toned down a little, but the actor does a good job so I'm ok with that.

He's smart and cunning and does what needs to be done to win.

I don't think that makes him a horrible person.  He's not a good guy, but I can understand where he's coming from.  He's in that middle grey area between good & bad like many of the characters in the series.  He makes for a good antagonist for that reason.

"...we had come late to Robert's cause. it was necessary to demonstrate our loyalty. When I laid those bodies before the throne no man could doubt that we had forsaken House Targaryen forever. And Robert's relief was palpable. As stupid as he was he even knew Rhaegar's children had to die if his throne was ever to be secure. Yet he saw himself as a hero and heroes do not kill children".

There's no excuse for killing children or exterminating houses - or burning harvests. And yet Tywin struck me more as a ruthless battle commander than some evil dog. He does what it takes to win wars, which is why he has never lost. He's not concerned with honor, moreso with respect and fear (which go hand in hand to him)

The show Tywin is basically the book Tywin to me. Perhaps more...happy but outside of that it's perfect.

I'm such a fan of this show!!!

Having read all of the books so far, I'd say the producers made a good job out of this.

Sure, some changes are a bit...UNACCEPTABLE...but I still love the show. Escpeailly the different POV's. It makes the material a bit refreshing.

Rather somber episode, which makes sense. Calm before the storm, to put it lightly. I can't say I liked the Robb stuff, and a lot of the dialogue was rather clunky and heavy handed tonight. Especially that cheesy final scene. Overall it was a good episode, but one of the weaker ones this season.

Also as many predicted, Ros turned out to be the prostitute Cersei captured/had beaten. Yet that scene was so brief and anti-climatic that I can't help but laugh at the entire farce. This character has taken up considerable screen time for two seasons, only to build up to that? She looked like she had been slapped a couple times. Someone really needs to ask the writers what the point of all that was, because I can't possibly imagine anyone feeling any connection to that "character."

Which is a pity because it's not like she's a supremely complicated character. I mean, yeah, non-book-readers think she's great and a badass, but outside of words she's nothing to show for it. By now, she would have been established as both a badass with words AND with weapons.

Disclaimer: I think this season has been good overall as television, and like it more than S1

It wouldn't even have to be an extended chase scene. Basically it's stuff like this that makes me question the writers. This is a case where you have to ask "is the new material an improvement over the book, is the book scene too expensive to shoot, etc." I won't spoiler tag this, I'd love to get non book reader's opinions

What we got: Jon walking around with Ygritte for two episodes. I love Ygritte, she had some great lines and I loved seeing her tease Jon. After an unlikely escape, Jon re-captures her and attempts to track his comrades but is led into a trap.

What we could have gotten: Jon capturing Ygritte and bringing her to the Halfhand/NW ranger camp. After determining she will offer no value, Halfhand tells Jon to "do with her what you must." Jon eventually lets her escape, and shortly afterward an eagle starts following the rangers. Initially it seems like a small wildling scouting party is hunting them, but quickly they realize it's a much larger group. One by one, rangers start dying or disappearing. Eventually they're led into a trap

Basically the show has put Jon, Dany, and Robb in a giant holding pattern. Jon walking around with Ygritte, Robb hanging out in camp doing nothing, and Dany waltzing around Qarth doing nothing - even after her dragons are stolen and her people are killed. That has given the writers the chance to create scenes that aren't in the book, and just about all of them have been average or bad. Like Robb's abrupt romance last night, or everything with Xaro/Qarth (although I liked the warlock killing the Thirteen).

I think maybe they cut Arya's story because they were iffy about having a young girl be involved in violence (given or taken).  A lot of the violence in the show and fucked up scenes have been toned down to more acceptable mainstream moral levels.

Even Renly was stabbed in the chest instead of his throat being cut and blood spraying out everywhere.

I haven't read the books.  To me it just feels like very little is happening over a long period of time.

I enjoy certain scenes with Arya and Tywin, Arya and The Man, handsome dwarf, Stannis and not so-Jean Reno, and other stuff.  What I'm missing is the big picture.  I can't describe it well.  It's not like I'm not enjoying it since I'm still watching it.

I will say that I've more desire to read the second book than I had for the first book and season.

The books, fourth and fifth aside, have a lot going on continuously but they almost always start out at a slow pace and then ramp up. The show is hurt by having only 10 episodes per season.

Here's the deal:  If you read book 2, you'll get a better story with better characters and better dialogues, but then you will need to read book 3 (since S3 won't be in continuity with Book 2 and some of these plotlines/characters will be book exclusive) and then you'll hate S3 next year when you watch it.

If you want to keep enjoying the show, don't read the books.

P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Davos looks like Jean Reno.

10 eps is doable.  10eps with limited budget that forces them to focus on a few scenes per ep and avoid anything that would cost them money, is what makes them change everything.

fwiw, I enjoy watching the eps and it's very fun to see the show brought to life with these actors.

I just think S2 is a really really bad adaptation of a great book, whereas S1 seemed more or less to be the book brought to life (missing 1 or 2 scenes).

I will say that the past few episodes' pacing has felt "off" for lack of a better term.  I still don't fault the show runners too much, because you have a bunch of characters that you're trying to move along and have shit happen with, but Dany's dragons were stolen TWO EPISODES ago and sill no resolution is kinda dumb.

Well, because they're saving House of the Undying (where the dragons are currently) for the final ep.  I think they pushed it back to the final ep because it's a cool scene with some build up for the next few seasons that will work as a closer and leave viewers wanting the next season.

Agreed, it's cheesy as hell. Not only were her dragons stolen, but like half of her people were murdered in cold blood. And her response has literally been to

1. Brood in her room
2. Demand Jorah fix the situation
3. Walk around the city with little protection

So looking at the next ep preview and reading about how the battle won't be the battle that's in the book because (paraphrasing) "A battle like that would be hard to do in even a 200 million budget movie ( ::) )".

Since there was no chain in the show, and boats cost money even with CG, I'm guessing

Everything shown thus far from the battle looks amazing, I'm pumped. Neil Marshall is directing it, who has filmed great battle scenes with limited budgets before. The showrunners even got a 15% budget increase to help film the scenes.

So yes, it's going to be awesome. It's not going to be LOTR, but I don't see how anyone expected it would be

I don't think I've seen a more impressive piece of CG effects from a TV show in... ever. They nailed the explosion so hard.

That was a great episode, I just wish I never watched Season 2 of Spartacus and that final episode, it just kinda set this impossible standard in my head.

The non-battle scenes were out-of-the-park though.

Holy fuck @ that episode. Not just the best episode of Game Of Thrones, that was one of the best episodes of television. I've been hard on this show at times, but that was simply stunning.

I also loved how every time a character was about to start telling a story, they were interrupted. It was almost like Martin trolling lol

Wait are you arguing the battle in Spartacus' S2 finale was bigger than tonight's? It wasn't even close in terms of money, extras, or direction. Game Of Thrones just took a giant dump on every (non miniseries) television battle ever

Who was singing "Rains of Castamere" at the end?  Gave me fucking chill bumps after that awesome fucking episode.

[edit]

Apparently it was The National that sang it.

Spartacus still has GoT beat in terms of cinematography and effective use of space, so yes, no matter how much money and extras they threw at the Blackwater battle, I still think Wrath of the Gods had it beat. Yes. Definitely.

Incomprehensible, I'm sorry. Neil Marshal did an amazing job, the camera was great tonight. Not even the greatest director in the world could make the 20-60 men in the Spartacus finale look larger/more imposing than the literally hundreds of extras in tonight's episode.

Use of space? Cinematography? It's like we watched a different episode. You are literally factually wrong bro. The only thing I've seen that tops that battle was in Band Of Brothers (miniseries, far more money). I've criticized this season a lot, but that episode was nearly perfect. The only bad thing was the lack of Sansa's song
