It can't be brought up enough that the WiiU totally fails the hype test set by the Wii in terms of casuals. The Wii controller was quite innovative and interesting, and it's hard to deny the appeal of stuff like WiiSports or WiiPlay for casuals. I can't see WiiU replicating the interest and hype the Wii received in mainstream outlets, from Oprah to news reports.

To make matters worse, Nintendo doesn't have a game to show off the controller's general appeal. Nintendo Land looks like a complete joke, and the name alone is a turn off

In order to differentiate the Wii U from the Wii, Nintendo will release a new NSMB game and a new Wii Fit game.

I have a Wii with NSMB, SMG, and SMG2.  In my opinion, these are the only three Wii games worth owning.
sin and punishment 2 should be in this pile. Same for House of the Dead, stuff like that.

NSMB doesn't strike me as a killer app though, at least not for the market Nintendo is aiming for. It'll sell well obviously but it's not the buzz inducing game they need. And Wii Fit isn't really a game tbh. The Wii was a hit in part because it was a great party console for many people; they weren't whipping out Wii Fit to play with friends.

There's a good amount of skinnable whimsy in there , boss. Perhaps they are holding out for the Wii U to make the definitive version with the vastly/infinitely more accurate single touch tech from the DS over this multitouch rubbish that's so bad that no one can play any games on it at all.

Nintendo is focusing way too much on tablet...tablet this, tablet that, tablet, tablet
It reminds of their initial 3DS strategy...3D,3D,3D,3D

It doesn't help that Nintendo released bunch of Wii "something" accessories so people naturally think:"Cool!I might buy this to use with my Wii...if I can find it"

Heh, I was being sarcastic.  The fact that NSMBU and Wii Fit U will look very similar like its Wii predecessors will make it hard to tell the difference or why they want to spend money on new hardware for games that look exactly the same.

To me, I think the heavy asset recycling of the Mii stuff and NSMB will bite Nintendo in the ass when it comes to justifying putting down money for a new console.  Why pay $300+ for a new console to play games that look exactly like what they played 3-4 years ago?

Fuck you if Geometry Wars Galaxies ain't on your list. :gun
...this reminds me that since the system is pretty much fucking dead at this point we should do a post-mortem thread and have some LIST WARS/arguing about what was worthwhile on the Gamecube 2.0.

I really hope the gamepad is backwards compatible with wii classic controller games solely for playing Geometry Wars Galaxies as a dual stick shooter without the octagonal gates.  The pointer control scheme almost worked except some dead zone issues make high score attacking almost impossible.

It really depends on what type of signal the wii u pad is sending and how games running in backwards compatibility mode interpret it.  For instance, I knew a wiimote with motionplus built in was coming, because for certain wii games if you had a nunchuck or classicon hooked that wasn't compatible hooked up the game would tell you to disconnect the device.  This wasn't the case with the wiimotionplus attachment which prompted no such ... prompt.

The Jaguar's two main processors weren't actually 64-bit, they were 32-bit. There was like one smaller processor that WAS 64-bit and it had a 64-bit bus so Atari claimed it was a 64-bit system. Nintendo obviously disagreed.

Pretty sure load times were the main reason (technical anyway) why Nintendo went with cartridges.

That swirling torrent of PS2 hype was so hilarious. I was playing my Dreamcast and having the time of my life when all my teenaged mouth breathing friends would rip on me because they will have a PS2 soon. PS2 launch day came and some time after most of them decided to get a PS2 in the same week, it turns out 95% of them got the bouncer with the console.

The bitter, bitter tears was glorious as they flocked to my place to play Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure and Power Stone :lol

the top and bottom of all of this is that Nintendo and their fans are completely deluded.

It's GREAT for Nintendo fans that they will get X360 levels - but... that's great for Nintendo only fans but that's it! Who else is going to give a flying shit?

IF (and it is a big if) Kinect did not exist and X360+Kinect levels was Nintendo's new joint then - fine - i would be "this is not for me" but i'd be able to see what they are aiming for ... but what the hell does Wii U bring? There's absolutely ZERO about the Wii U that will bring in non-fucktard ninthings.  NOTHING.

Also - again - if that 399Euro price tag turns out to have any truth about it? Wreath this sh1t.

That COD story is awesome, just shows how out of touch they are.

Quote
"You can imagine how a game like Call of Duty would work on the Wii U - the GamePad will allow you to declutter the TV and pull gaming items like maps down and not interrupt your interaction and enjoy the cinematic quality of the game on the TV.

No one wants to be constantly looking at a second screen while playing a twitch shooter. By definition you're interrupting your interaction by having to shift focus from one screen to another. And you can't capture that audience with terrible online architecture.

But Moffitt admitted the Wii U's controls were "confusing relative to the Wii".

It's like they're self aware now, but also aren't.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-06-21-wii-us-miiverse-wont-connect-with-other-social-networks

Quote
No integration with Facebook or Twitter, but Nintendo hopes games with be the theme that attracts users

The company has finally embraced a clearer online strategy with its new console - Miiverse is integrated directly into the Wii U's system menu and games, allowing users to interact through text and video although it will be moderated with up to 30 minutes delay.

...

Instead, Nintendo will offer basic functions of social services that Fischer admits are not revolutionary but he believes have so far been missing from the console gaming environment.

"On the Wii U we do have additional reasons for connecting, we talked about things like the video chat system, nothing revolutionary but it's going to be convenient, it's going to be easy.

"And the Miiverse is the one actually that I believe has a very unique feature which is we put ourselves in the situation of making sure the people you can communicate with they are somehow already in a kind of community. The community will be the Wii U owners, who will have this common interest for video games and our expectation about that is it's going to be a way to enhance the idea of sharing information on the video game."

...

"One thing that is very important to us is that somehow you could pick up information from people you trust, maybe on games that you wouldn't consider naturally. Because Miiverse will show you what are the topics or the games played at the moment within the community. And then you may have one interesting comment that will trigger your curiosity and then maybe you will get more information on that game and then at the end what is important to make sure people have different game play experiences. So considering a game that you wouldn't consider it's like enlarging your scope in terms of gaming, and that's the key point for us," he concluded.

They can't be this naive.

At least they explained why their online system is so poor

Quote
Rival console networks have at least allowed users to download specific social networking apps, but Fischer said Nintendo's policy is not to offer a service that is already available on multiple devices.

So nobody has to go looking for it:
Quote
It seems to be quite obvious to me.

The minimum bit is the lower end of its range of capabilities. ie to begin with, it is capable of running CryEngine 3 as good as or better than 360, and its upper limits are somewhere above what PS3/360 can achieve.

ie just looking at xbox/360 and ps2/3 and wii/u
