From my post in What Are You Playing:
Quote
The event's eponymous Playlist is giving out double experience points, but it's four weird little new Jobs: Capture with Taxis, an LTS session in the same area which has really weak LoS issues, a difficult parachute race, and then a Citroen race which emphasizes its lack of acceleration and handling.

Meh.

So... yeah, there /are/ good times to be had, but there's nothing really new in this update and the event itself is pretty stingy, awarding only double RP for the Playlist, and deathmatch killstreaks and head shots. The 3 new Gang Attacks are giving 4X moneys but that's... I guess it's about $8K but they're only at predetermined times.

<coolstorybro>
I had a pretty great run which epitomized the best parts of the GTA Online Free Mode. Simeon had sent a list of the cars he wanted, and I immediately saw one of them, a Patriot, out in Blaine on the north of the map. I grab it and begin the long trek toward the docks on the southeast part of the map, and en route Simeon's special green vehicle pops up on the map, but I figure the Patriot-in-the-hand is worth two-in-the-bush, so I keep going.

When I get to the roadways leading to the docks, I blow past a Pay-N-Spray where someone has stopped with the special green car. I don't slow down, don't want to risk anyone else who might be after the green car taking a poke at me and losing the Patriot. I get all the way down to Simeon's drop point, turn in my car, and I see the green car is taking the LONG way around, the GPS way of getting to Simeon's drop point; he's just waiting there, not doing anything.

I call Lester, get him to give me a minute "off the radar." I step out, zoom in with my sniper scope, and realize the guy is just sitting there in his car. SPLOOSH. I run up, grab the car, and drop it off at Simeon's, and complete the transaction. I assume the previous guy in the car isn't happy about this.

When I come out of the docks garage, the guy is running to get to safe cover to take me out, so I drop him. I am giggling like crazy as I jump in the car he'd brought, and tail it out of there. I see he's trying to catch up with me, so I pull into an Ammunation like I'm going shopping, but leave my car in the narrow gate, and drop a Sticky Bomb on it. As the guy tries to navigate the partially blocked gate, I trigger the Sticky. BOOOOOM-BOOOOOOOOOOOM, as my borrowed car and his car go up in succession. I assume this dude's probably on the verge of having a stroke.

The guy pursued me for several more punishings; I think the final score was 10-1. He got me once while I was laughing so hard that I accidentally hit my Guide Button and lost control for a few seconds.

It's been a while since I've laughed that hard during a video game.

The big red circle is the diameter of the active Gang Attack area; you enter it to initiate the Gang Attack. Sometimes they're on a different elevation level, above or below you -- that's usually the cause if it doesn't start. Once inside, the small, hollow, deep red circles are bad guys who kindly request that you shoot them.

http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/52270/The-GTA-Online-Independence-Day-Special-Available-Starting

Buncha new crap; all jingoistically focused, as is apt for an "In partnership with Ammu-Nation" package. There's an event associated with this limited-time package, but it doesn't appear to feature increased RP.

Of note:
Quote
This special seasonal content will be available to redeem in-game until Mid-July (we will announce a specific redemption expiration date soon). The automatic update for the Independence Day Special also includes additional game tuning updates and other adjustments, including the new On Call Matchmaking function. This new option allows players to accept a Job invite and continue playing in Freemode until that Job fills up, reducing time spent idle while waiting for a Job to start. For the complete list of all the fixes and tuning updates, visit the Rockstar Support site.

It's also worth noting that the DLC's new "firework rocket launcher" is available to EVERYONE, but unlike the regular launcher, does limited damage. I shot a regular car with it, it rocked the car with impressive knockback and started a fire around it, but the car didn't appear otherwise damaged. I also used it during a Gang Attack to little effect. So far, the scariest thing about it is that you look like you're carrying a Rocket Launcher.

Edit: I was wrong! There's a dedicated Playlist.

I don't mind that at all, but I don't like that there's no weapon pickup if the Player is not sufficiently leveled for it.

In RDR, it was pretty elegant: Weapons unlocked based on Player Level, so Players could start with their highest-level weapon upon entering Free Roam. At any time if a new weapon was picked up, the Player could use it for the duration of the session. So jumping in and doing a couple Gang Hideouts where weapons would drop would get the higher-level weapon pretty quickly. Even Deathmatch sessions would provide weapons pretty quickly.

In GTAO it is pretty messed up that I can drop a weapon in a session for a team-mate, they can pick it up but only gain ammo for the weapon, if they're not high enough level to use it. I lose access to the weapon, they don't get access to the weapon, and I have to repurchase it at an Ammu-Nation to get it back.

All of the added weapons from updates and events are not level locked though (at least I dont think they are) so you can build a decent arsenal off the bat now. The Special Carbine, Bullpup Rifle and Heavy Pistol are all pretty deadly. All the good shotguns are level locked however. Himu all the update weapons are found on the right hand wall while shopping at Ammu-Nation if you've missed them, its probably not that obvious that theyre there.

The new musket is pretty great, technically a "shotgun" however it allows ranged one shot kills with a very slow reload. Reminds me of the Buffalo Rifle in RDR.

Yeah that was a great feature of RDR. When I logged in for the day if I was low leveled (ie. when you pass into legend) I would first do the gang hideouts which yielded the Mauser Pistol and Buffalo Rifle.

:bow Mauser Pistol :bow2

:piss Volcanic Pistol :piss2

Anyway, yeah, I wonder why they pulled it out. It's clear that weapon pick-up and ammo pick-up were in the GTAO game design from the outset; the fact that Players can intentionally drop weapons which cannot be picked up by the intended beneficiary tells me it was pulled late from the game.

I suspect it was to prevent people from spamming "gimme Rocket Launcher" requests across in-game chat.  Or maybe to prevent packs of griefers from assaulting higher-level players just to get the weapon, then spawn-killing each other to duplicate it?

...But they could just limit its effectiveness by locking ammunition purchase to Player level, so they'd only ever get a single clip by this method.

Color me curious.

Well, I try to keep an open mind, and I'll give games a second chance now and again. I didn't care for inFamous the first time I tried it, but when I got it for free during the PSN hacking debacle I downloaded it and ended up really enjoying it. I enjoyed some of the MP in GTA V, and it looks like they've made enough changes that I might end up liking the SP if I give it another shot in FPS view.

Gave this a try for a little while today. FPS mode takes a little getting used to. It's not as smooth as a traditional FPS game like Far Cry, and there's no ADS (think more like Halo for aiming). Luckily there are all kinds of control tweaks available, and you can set sensitivity, etc. however you want. I have a mix of FPS view on foot, TPS when I go into cover, and camera set back when I get behind the wheel. Gotta hand that to them, they made the camera/controls  very tweakable. You can even set your FOV in FPS mode.

You know how histrionic news-types would call GTA games "murder simulators?" Well, GTAV FPS mode is a straight-up murder simulator :lol

I'm not as blown away over the graphical upgrades as some have been, but it runs really smoothly no matter what you're doing. I'm most impressed with online performance, that runs silky-smooth and the graphics remain really crisp.

I don't think the FPS controls suck, they just require some adjustment in the settings to suit your particular taste. They don't work as well on default or  "straight out of the box" as something like Halo or Far Cry does.

Fps controls not being good really sucks

Gta would really benefit from snappy responsive controls and gameplay, this has been the achilles heel of the series since the beginning and every time im amazed that they manage to create something that feels off.

I think the FPS controls work pretty well.

GTA is not a fast paced FPS game their is a certain flow to the game that helps it and cover is important when getting into any sort of gunfight.

I also think people haven't taken in game stats into account, Michael is good with weapons. Franklin and Trevor by default are just OK, take them to the gun range and get their stats up.
