Sure, but it's easier to swallow BUGS-R-US and ANNA REX when it takes place in a world where the game looks like this:

And not like this:

Which graphical style does juvenile crap like Bugs-R-US and Anna Rex fit? Which one makes it look like it's trying too hard because it takes place in a more graphically realistic setting? This is why RDR owns. None of that bullshit.

I was about to disagree with the disparity between visuals and tone, but find I have to agree. One of the biggest surprises for me in GTA IV was the difference I felt when hitting pedestrians with my car. Last-gen, on collision the pedestrians would immediately go into their prone/knocked down pose and soar through the air to land on the ground in it. With GTA IV, clipping them would cause a more realistic reaction, they'd fold over your hood, slide off, crumple to the ground... I felt horrible! It was too realistic for me.

The disparity between visuals and tone is why I think Gay Tony is an abomination and worse than IV.

It has the silly stupid juvenile shit like TW@ but also has realistic graphics and physics, BUT the story is cartoony as fuck. So the visuals REALLY don't mesh with what's going on screen in that game.

It's like Rockstar has two visions for these games now: a "comedic" satire of American life and a serious "gritty" take with a realistic art style. Neither of these mesh nor compliment each other. It's like they're doing one because it's traditionally tied to their franchise even if it doesn't fit their vision anymore. This clash makes playing the games less fun because it takes you out of the game.

In an example, Lucasarts rehires Ron Gilbert to make a new Monkey Island.

The game still has the same old Monkey Island humor and charm and writing.

But instead of looking like this:

It looks like this:

As a very visual person, this just fucks with me.

We've been discussing it the entire thread so clearly people do care and this factors into why GTAIV wasn't very good: the writing.

It's not just on the billboards. It's in the shops you shop at, the ads you listen to on the radio, and even in the game dialogue. ??? The writing simply does not fit the setting, tonality, or even graphical style. You have an entire mission dedicated to pretending to be gay on a site just so you can kill a flamboyant gay man in a diner. I don't even have to mention the Florian missions. Holy shit. Rockstar advertised GTSIV as a major crime story, its graphics reflect this, but the actual writing is the most cartoony, canned bullshit imaginable. Putrid, awful shit.

To be fair, I doubt GTAV will be as bad as GTAIV.

Rockstar has learned a lot since IV, in their writing and gameplay. What with Chinatown Wars, Lost and the Damned, Red Dead Redemption, and more. They've especially learned a lot about their engine RAGE.

I think there's reason to be excited, but it could just as easily be a disappointment. I'm waiting for the GI preview before I have an opinion, but I just wanna say that art is absolutely delicious.
