Guys do not read the ign preview article for gtav lest you want to kill yourself. It's that bad and everything you're expecting: full on wank, corporate suck up-ism, and complete and utter fellatio in its text. You can virtually hear the author fapping on the other side of his monitor. AVOID. I'm going to avoid all GTAV previews and reviews from now on. Only my opinion matters at this point.

After GTAIV, I can't take any single review seriously, so I'm going to judge the game completely on my own. Thing is, the beginning of GTAIV is GREAT, and it gets worse...and worse...until you reach the final mission and you just want to snap that disc in half. Reports that a lot of the press didn't play the full game are rampant and I have no reason at all to take them seriously after GTAIV. So this time, for the first time ever, I'm going to rush through the story of a GTA game. GTA Online is practically forcing me to do so anyways. I think 2 weeks is enough time to beat the story.

So you guys can hold off for two weeks to see if the single player game is good. I'm sure most of you guys can wait anyways.

Agreed with Himu. The beginning of GTA4 is a legit 10/10.

Then the story crumbles to dust after the first act and you realize there really isn't anything fun to do in the city. Still, some of the multiplayer modes were ace.

Hell, you can say the same for MGS4; another game released a month after GTA4 that got stellar reviews. Only difference is that the story fell apart after the second act and I never bothered with the multiplayer because of Konami's distinguished mentally-challenged. The summer of '08 was such a magical time for games journalism.

Yeah, beginning of GTAIV was and still is amazing to me. After Roman's depot and apartment burn, it's downhill from there.

MGS4 is another front loaded game.

A big part of GTAIV's backlash came from the fact that after the first part of the game, there was a large revelation that the game was entirely devoid of content or variety, as the game continued to crumble piece after piece.

Yeah, there is a lot of care and devotion and HOPE when GTA IV's in "tutorial mode," in that initial run. The mood, the graphics, the tone... it's wonderful. And you can see on the map that you're just in one tiny corner of Liberty City, so you look out across the world and think, OH, MY GOD, THIS IS GOING TO BE STELLAR. THIS GAME... IT IS SO RICH AND REPLETE.

Right up until you land at the Broker apartment. Despite Broker looking even more interesting than any previous area, it's from that point forward where the story meanders, your cousins and girlfriends start calling you all the time to drive across the map, and the seams begin to show, and wear thin.

I don't think it got bad until Algonquin.

Broker - fantastic, still feel this way after my replay last year. Each and every character you work for has a specific arc and interesting plot development. GTA is at its best when the missions give a feeling an arc, are continuous and build up a grand story rather than do random missions for jokers. Broker is fantastic about this and the mission variety is the best in the game.

Bohan - not as good Broker but still decent. The missions still contain arcs but characters start to become flamboyant - such as Manny or Brucie - despite the overall tone of the game being more realistic than the past. They feel like they don't belong in the game. However the sections with Michelle remain fantastic and I like how Rockstar integrated her into the story.

Algonqui - the plot meanders, Niko lacks any sense of humanity, his character development halts to a stand still, mission variety is non existent, location variety during missions is non existent, the realization that the game is devoid of odd jobs and side activities like the past and how completely fucking empty the game world is. Those arcs I was talking about? Completely stop. There's hints of them in the McReary fratricide storyline and the Gracie kidnapping missions (which I love due to how episodic and interconnected each mission in that storyline is). You go from impactful missions that tell a larger story to...I dunno why I'm doing this.

Alderney - Jesus fucking Wept.

GTAIV is the complete opposite of San Andreas or even Vice City in this regard. In VC AND SA once past the initial hump the game completely opens up. You go from inside one city in Los Santos to traveling the countryside and exploring for explorations sake. IV never had such a moment.

I'm hoping with V that having three characters fixes this issue. Since you're three different characters in three different parts of the county, they have the opportunity to tell three smaller stories instead of one grand one. This could help in regards to editing We also get the variety in locales we didn't get with IV which also likely means more variety in missions. Also since you're three characters, reason suggests that instead of always working for dudes and doing random shit for assholes, most of the missions are self serving and the three characters are the ones mostly planning stuff. Since the game is about heists, there's very little reason for the game to devolve into the repetitive go to this random warehouse and kill these random mooks that we had to suffer with in IV.

The more I see of IV the more I think it was a 100 million dollar beta test for GTAV.

Also considering the press probably only got 10-20 hours into GTAIV it makes me more sympathetic towards the review scores. Because I really think the Broker part is that good.

I remember the moment when I decided I really hated GTA IV. I was on a tailing mission then fucking Roman calls me up. instinctively I press the sprint button but he picks up the phone and does that slow paced walk when he's on the phone and I failed the mission.

Fucking terribly designed, controlled and made game. Anyone who says they like that game is a huge fucking idiot.

I'm mixed on it. I like some of IV. I like the multi. I LOVE the expansions. I like the first part of the story, I like some of the missions. But it is ultimately a game full of flaws left and right enough to make me forget all of this.

And despite all of this I've clocked at least 150 hours in this incarnation of Liberty City between the expansions, the main game, replays, online, and desperate grasps get the appeal of the second half of the game.

No, no. This is different. He writes it as if it's a fucking novel.

Samples:

Quote
It was pure Hollywood. A random, breathtaking moment of awesome directly stemming from a decision I made. A purely emergent, life-and-death dance more exciting than every pre-constructed, quick-time event I’ve ever half-heartedly button-bashed my way through.

Make no mistake; Grand Theft Auto V is made of moments just like this.

And it feels incredible

Quote
To the right, over the ocean, the sun is setting. The sky glows orange as I near the first turn-off. Pulling into a more built-up area of town I’m reminded of the obsessive, incidental detail that amazed me during our first, hands-off demonstration. The cracked roads. The bespoke graffiti lining the walls. The unique shopfronts and billboards littering your line of sight. The city is colourful yet weathered. Living but lived-in. Like Liberty City before it, Los Santos is already making me feel as much like a tourist as a player.

Quote
Never mind November; I suspect the next generation will start when GTA V says it does.

My favorite:

Quote
Trevor and the bike sprang out from in front of the encroaching truck like a stabbed cat.

Like a stabbed cat? What does this even MEAN?

GTA V will have DLC to follow up on its success, akin to TLAD and TBOGT.

They'll also ship a sequel for RDR before VI.

The wait for GTA VI will be a looooong one.

No Houser said they aren't doing that type of doc anymore. They're going to do smaller sized dlc that's cheaper. The Episodes weren't a successful money venture in IV so they aren't doing it again.

Huh. That's... A little hard to believe.

I believe you that he said it, but it is hard to believe they weren't profitable, or where they blew it in making the DLC unprofitable.

The plan was essentially the same for RDR, in that it was supported with robust DLC which was later offered as standalone disc-based retail product. I wonder if that was also unprofitable.

I replayed SA in the past year on xbox and pc. I've beaten it twice.

The occasional feature from 2004 aside, it's still great. I suggest playing it on Xbox (360 bc allows 360 support. No black/white buttons so those buttons are on bumpers. You can also make shooting mapped to triggers. 360 bc version is THE superior console method) or pc. Problem with pc is that the steam version is patched out of widescreen because R* took out mod support and other shit, post-hot coffee. So you have to downgrade your file, which in some cases is outright illegal if you're privy on that thing. It's a bitch and a half.

But when you get it working, the pc version is easily the best version.

On SA itself: I think it's the best 3d GTA now. The scale and mission variety just can't be beat.

Just try to get to the Catalina missions before GTAV for a real treat and maybe a teaser for what's to come. Gosh the Catalina missions are still amazing to me, getting kicked out of Los Santos and wandering the countryside. The entire setup is still :lawd

I know GTAV isn't as big, and it could be as wack as GTA4, but I'm ready to take a chance again :derp

Especially GTA3. Ten collisions and the car's toast. Vice City bumped it to around 20, San Andreas is probably double that.

Something I really appreciated about GTA IV was that you could nick ledges, lampposts, and other cars without affecting your momentum all that much, which is a huge change from the PS2 games. The slightest clip could send your car vertical at the right speed.

I sure as hell remember the difference between the Ambulance missions in GTA III and Liberty City Stories, as it was immediately apparent. I'd never been able to finish them in GTA III, but before my PS2 copy of LCS arrived, I decided to get some practice in. I managed to get up to level 10 or 11 in III, but still not finish it.

When LCS arrived, I immediately went for it, and ended up clearing the mission on my first try.

The Ambulances were less wobbly and fragile, for sure.

Another annoying thing which they fixed in GTA IV was the terrain pop-in. I hated driving at high speed and then have my car just stopped, whammo, and then have the landscape fade in some wall or barricade which hadn't previously been there.

On the other hand, the physics are shit and slow as molasses so if your car is on fire and you do a jump escape, Niko will roll out and take forever to get back up. Or god forbid you're driving slowly and have to suffer through that slow ass animation for Niko to get the fuck out of the car.

I read about that yesterday.  Again, I want a greatly expanded GTA Online to be the goal for the next game.  As for other unrealistic expectations, a funhouse sized United States map, similar to The Crew, would be awesome.  Reuse GTA4's Liberty City and GTA5's map and build around them...use Red Dead Redemption's map for the middle states, and really, all that needs to be built is Vice City.

I don't see where they got the "GTAIV+RDR combined size", that's some Rockstar Special Brand bullshit. Now, Rockstar is typically pretty damn good at level design so it'll probably be fun to navigate regardless of the size, but that map is significantly smaller than I thought, given their comments. It's a missed opportunity that there isn't some sort of island separate from the mainland.
