I want less shitty driving than GTA IV, free-aim shooting (mandatory, not optional, so gameplay is tuned around it), the return of Ammu-Nation, and stuff to do outside story mission, AND I DON'T MEAN SHOOTING PIGEONS.

Is that too much to ask?

Nope.

And the gameplay trailer seemed to show things to do aside from pigeons.

Honestly, i'm not sure why anyone would be worried about this games gameplay at this point.

You should be worrying about the story and writing and its Houserisms.

I think it's a more a question of whether the actual meat and potatoes of the gameplay has evolved at all.  I mean, Batman: AA style combat is pretty much becoming a standard model across genres.  It would be kind of disappointing if GTAV kept the same system it's had since 3.  Not that it wouldn't be a fun experience regardless.

an issue with Batman/Sleeping Dogs/AssCreed fighting is that they're all about fighting crowds and I don't know that would be orchestrated in a GTA game.  but yeah, for all its improvements, the fighting in RDR kinda sucks.  In recent memory I think Mafia 2 does a solid job at making simple one-on-one fighting satisfying.

edit: apparently if you ditch (or destroy?) a customized vehicle, you can go to an impound to buy it back.  not quite saint's row simple, but it' an improvement.

Why would anyone want Batman AA combat in GTA? Batman AA combat is about making Batman feel like a badass as he fights 8-10 people at once. GTA melee is usually against 1-2 people tops.

I don't know about that –– they could take elements of the AA system, like the block, counter, and evade moves.  Obviously your not going to be destroying 20+ henchman in GTA, but the beauty of Batman's fighting system is that its dynamic and fun no matter the number of enemies -- be it 1 or 100.

They don't need Batman AA combat. All they need to do is implement the combat from The Warriors into GTA. The fact they didn't with IV was distinguished mentally-challenged.

The Warriors isn't a bad idea.

GTA melee actually does feature blocks and counters, though they are difficult to use and, outside the Fight Club, additionally hampered by the default camera.

The thing for me about Batman and Sleepeh Dawgs was it was ALL ABOUT the melee. GTA is about guns, consistently. Batman doesn't use guns, even as he has to face them.  SD had a great solution for limiting guns, but that would be hard to limit similarly in GTA while maintaining that game's feel.

Yeah, I was shocked GTAIV didn't use The Warriors combat as a template for GTAIV's melee considering they usually incorporate ideas from other rockstar games into GTA. Made no sense then, makes no sense now. Especially since The Warriors combat is so fucking killer.

I was talking to himu about this yesterday. All I wanted to keep was some of the progression of the single player game in the multiplayer, so you're buying properties, doing missions, etc. in an open world populated with other people. What they showed was exactly that. I'm even more surprised by the fact that they've thrown a map creator in there.

Really can't wait for the PC version.

Even those familiar investments, like purchasing an apartment, have been reworked and expanded for GTA Online. Say you're hanging out in your high-rise apartment enjoying the view down below. You spot a flurry of red and blue lights in the distance and decide to see what's going on.t So you switch on your TV, tune into the news, and suddenly you're watching your friend fleeing from the police in real-time thanks o the news helicopter flying directly above him. Beyond little touches like this, you can use your apartment for more practical uses, as well--like getting your friends together to go over the details of a heist in your planning room or keeping a watchful eye on your 10-car garage using a closed-circuit security camera feed. Hell, you can even take a shower to wash off the blood after a particularly brutal mission.

 :ohhh

Quote
Things are sure to get even more interesting sometime after launch when the stock market is implemented: Instead of protecting cars, you'll be able to engage in a bit of lighthearted market manipulation by investing your money in a car manufacturer and running around town destroying every one of those models you come across. Suddenly that company is going to be pumping out a whole lot of new cars. Nice time to be a stockholder, eh?

 :ohhh :ohhh

oh man, you can get robbed of your earnings if you don't deposit your money after a mission/heist.

I'm kinda mixed on the online stuff. On one hand it feels like they've taken a lot of inspiration from RDR which is very good. On the other hand I kinda wish the experience was like a true larger scale player experience like an APB but not crappy kind of thing. I hope the experience doesn't end up feeling barren like the online stuff was in GTA 4 with the occasional heist to mix things up. 16 to 20 players in a world the size of GTA is not very many.

Unless people were just fooling around (and that's mostly what GTA 4 ended up as in most modes and cases) I thought GTA 4 was absolutely barren when it came to players. That's honestly why I stopped playing it.

Now if the experience is more about co-op event type stuff that number is fine. But player versus player type activities with that number is like trying to play Battlefield with a low number of players on a massive map. It wasn't fun for me at all in GTA 4.

Probably so but...

The reason why RDR worked in multiplayer was not only because they had lots of activities, there was something that was just really fun and unique about wandering around the land and interacting with your friends and shit in that game. I can't put my finger on exactly why. I thought the same would extend to GTA 4 but just rolling around with friends in a city scape got boring a lot more quickly for some reason. So I'm either hoping the shit load of activities will change that feeling or the pvp content can be slightly more contained so it doesn't feel like 16 disconnected people in a massive world.
