I think this game nails the atmosphere in the exact same way that RDR did. I did a complete circuit around the map last night, and wound up driving back into town from the desert as the sun was setting. Just the weather effects combined with the atmospherics and colors were spot on perfect. And dat music

Driving in the rain, the water effects on your tires  :whew

In a lot of ways it reminds me of modern day Red Dead more than a follow-up to GTA4 (as dumb as that sounds).

some random bits I haven't seen others mention:
-The seamless transition from gameplay to cutscene back to gameplay is great.  You're used to arriving at a mission market, fade to black, cutscene, fade to black, back to gameplay.  In GTAV you sometimes don't notice that cutscene has ended and you're in control again (that a good thing).
-RPG abilities, uh, you can max out your gun skill in ~5 minutes at the gun range.  The other abilities aren't as quick, but it doesn't come off like you'll need to grind or anything.
-Random crimes and events happen like in RDR, and so far it's more varied than in RDR.  I've stopped mugging, smacked around paparazzi, saw a gang vs police shootout, etc.  All in all it makes the world feel active.
-Way too much of the writing is soap box preaching.  Way too much.  That said, the characters and stuff are better than GTA4 already.
-Retractable roofs  :omg

I feel like there isnt that much random events. The 100% checklist only has like 20 "random events" listed. Maybe that just means you have to complete 20.

I've

- Stopped a couple muggings (ran the bitch over)
- Saved a guy from a truck who was trapped in debris, had to bulldoze it out of the way

I thought that 20 were the strangers ("?") missions.

another neat detail to the game is that your bank account tracks all your (legit) deposits and withdrawals.  mine said +$250 from the arab cars salesman, -$20 for beard, -$15 for gun range.  and the different characters use different banks, have different cellphones, different accounts on the stock market (haven't and won't bother messing with this), etc.

How much soap box writing we talking about here? Is it worse than IV's crap with Niko coming to America and realizing Roman lives in a shit hole? So they talk about TEH AMERICAN DREAM?

Michael likes to talk about how ITS JUST NOT WORTH IT, GET A DEGREE, YOU CAN DO MORE DAMAGE THAT WAY

And Simeon likes to call everyone a racist

It's about on par with IV and RDR IMO.  The writers think they need to give us some sort of lesson in sociology every time you enter a vehicle with someone else.

RDR was really cute about this shit. Like how they bitch about the FEDERAL GUVMENT getting in their territory. :lol RDR is way worse on the soapbox front than GTAIV, but I try to not let it be a big issue to me because it kind of makes sense within the context of the time period and setting. Doesn't make it any less :lol though.

I don't mind it in either of the games because I came to terms a long time ago with the fact that writing in video games is craptacular at best.  If they don't bother you, V won't bother you either.

to use one specific example, a mild spoiler from a stranger mission

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Franklin runs into a paparazzi hoping to catch some rapper's buttlust, and he immediately goes off "leave these celebrities alone, homie! why it matter if he sucks dick, homie!  get a life, homie!" and then you do a mission for him and Franklin's like "HOPE I DON'T SEE YOUR ASS AGAIN, homie."
[close]

I don't mind it that much because, again, the game is actually fun to play.

same thing happened to me.  when Franklin started wheezing I stole a motorcycle and ran him down.  I returned the victim's wallet but kept the bike  :pimp

another time I ran into two dudes mugging a store clerk; they asked me to find them a ride.  punched one in the head and the other guy shot me dead  :pimp

my Franklin looks like Stringer Bell's lighter skinned brother.  Michael has a crazy Mel Gibson beard option I'm eying.

The lyrics of that song are taken from Leigh Alexander's GTAV review.

Honestly, the review/song are more a stab at the way video game journalists have completely turned off their critical thinking skills to fall all over themselves to slob on Rockstar's knob and hand out 10/10s. But it is also GTAV is stupid a little bit.

Honestly, I'm not even sure why anyone would be surprised? And looking at a few of the reviews, only IGN, Gametrailers, and Adam Sessler really slob on it. Eurogamer, Destructoid, and a few others are quite objective in their reviewing.

Also, for a game with "Auto" right there in the title, they have never managed to get a grasp on making the driving worth a fuck.

Try changing camera height from 'low' to 'high' in the options.  Sounds minor, but it helps by improving your visibility.  I started driving better once I switched.

If anyone else is playing on PS3, you can change aim/shoot from L2/R2 to L1/R1.  I thought I'd have to use the mushy triggers like in GTA4.

So is this shitty like 4 or actually good like 4's DLC?

Having not played more than a couple hours and leaving no time for reflection, I will say that it's worlds better than anything GTA4.

I was hoping that the game would treat females better in the scope of the game, and I was seeing some good things in the early bits of the game....

then Michael had to race a batshit crazy jogger, Franklin had to take some paparazzi pics of a starlet getting it in the butthole thus leading to a high speed chase that she initiated, and michael's wife is a cheating spouse.

All hope diminished, but meh, c'est la vie in GTA-world.

Forget it, Jake. It's San Andreas.

Hopefully they aren't like in RDR where they're repeated over and over. They should only appear a few times - if only once - throughout so many hours. Otherwise, it exposes the game world as artificial. RDR's world felt full of life until you saw the same random events repeatedly.
