Beat the story... kinda flat to be honest. I felt like I didnt really accomplish anything.

I've stalled out around mission 25 or so, the one with the submersible. The game is kind of dragging for me, too much driving between (and during) missions.

Driving is the best part of the game to be honest.

You really don't have enough health to cause serious mayhem on foot like in the previous GTAs, the shooting feels more dated with each new installment, the character movement mechanics are god awful and the heists are disappointingly sparse. Oh and everyone in the story is a giant asshole. Funny that the most likeable of the bunch is a teddy bear rapist.

Still, pretty good game. The (minor) disappointment set in 40 hours in compared to 20 for GTA 4. (and it def wasn't minor)

Not particularly. None of the characters - particularly antagonists - are very convincing. There is no "issue" to solve or hole to dig out. I dunno. Lot of empty calories...

This game.

Seriously, I am having way too much fun. I grew up in Los Angeles, and they got the lighting just right. Between that and the architecture, the experience is transportative.

I still feel a little too much of that GTA IV feeling in the "I'ma win an OSCAR" attempt at serious pathos, and then Trevor comes in and it feels like GTA III-era hijinx all over again. There's a weird thing which happens when I am playing Trevor, and I just don't give a shit what happens to anyone around me. Some dickhead gymbro bugged me on the Venice analog, and I LT-focused on him. He immediately reacted like, "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO STEP TO ME, BRO?" and then I hit attack once, Trevor headbutted him, and the dudebro was laid the fuck out.

Win. Just, so much win. And I wouldn't have tried that playing Michael or Franklin.

I'm really enjoying this.

Online, I've not managed much. There are a bunch of chatty Kathys on most days, filling the air like a CB radio tuned to Channel Dimwit. I hope to have Stoney's synergy experience at some point. Right now people are just crying havoc, and letting slip the dogs of wah-wah.

Some neat easter eggs that are only available if you have 100% completion:

- UFO over Mount Chiliad (this is what that mural is referring to)

- Bigfoot

Other easter eggs:

- Thelma and Louise ending

- Sea Monster Skeleton

- Frozen Alien in the Prologue

- Ghost in the mountains

- Underwater UFO

- UFO in the sky

It's a really engaging fun time with the online stuff when you are playing with a group of friends. You can do just about everything in the multiplayer that you can do in the single player just with a group of friends (outside of the heists which will come later). In fact there are some additional activities.

I missed the whole Red Dead Redemption online thing because I didn't have a group of friends who had that game to play with. But I understand it now. Whatever they introduce down the line as far as DLC for it, I'll buy.

Online, I've not managed much. There are a bunch of chatty Kathys on most days, filling the air like a CB radio tuned to Channel Dimwit. I hope to have Stoney's synergy experience at some point. Right now people are just crying havoc, and letting slip the dogs of wah-wah.

There definitely are a lot of assholes. I mean when I join random rooms I get bounties put on me alot and the average person online tends to be a dickhead. But so many people have the game on my friends list that generally its just us in a private room doing stuff.

I'll put it this way. I still have about 10 missions left in the single player campaign. And I really like the campaign. But every time I get on now I kinda prefer to play the online stuff to level my guy up, get money, and play with friends.

Early in the game as Franklin I hung out with Michael's kid. I think we went to a strip club or something. The next time I had a tow truck mission with Tonya she implied that it was all around the streets that I was a rent boy and had relations with the kid.

I thought it was a clever touch to have dialogue for something so insignificant as that.

There are lots of little stuff like that in the game which is rather nice.

Yeah, driving as Trevor, I hit a mountain lion and he has some choice dialog.

Played a few hours of GTA Online today. Got hung on loading screens twice, but once I joined a couple Friends in a playlist, everything worked smooth as I could have hoped for. It was a seriously great time.

Freaked out one friend by telling him exactly what he was doing before he even knew that I'd joined his session. "How do you see me?" :lol the option of spectating while you wait is pretty brilliant. Have other games done this?

im about 80% in the game.

its a lot of fun.  starting with gta iv, i haven't really felt like going around and just doing random shit (gta iv kinda forced you to do that stuff anyway) like i always have with the GTA games.  I guess they edged far enough away from goofiness for me to have fun just killing reams of policemen and going on high speed chases and shit.

the rampages are a nice throwback to that sort of thing, though, although there's only 5 of them :P

anyway, i assume GTA Online rewards you more for that sort of thing than the singleplayer stuff, so i guess i'll mostly be doing that once i get around to beating the game and the server issues level out.

my favorite extra mode was vigilante and it seems like they don't let you do that anymore -- its more about the "random events" that occur every now and then which is sort of sad, since i liked being able to have a "most wanted" list or whatever that IV had.

The rampages turn into a horde mode online  that can be played co-op with up to 4 players. They are good for grinding money and gun skill.

I also noticed that the stock exchange is down or off or whatever for GTA Online. Too much mayhem to track stock behavior reasonably?

I got kinda bored with GTA Online. I see the appeal and like the idea, but I feel like you have to avoid people because NO MATTER WHAT whoever sees you will immediately start pulling a glock on you. The game is HORRIBLE at explaining stuff as well.

It looks like you can do most achievements in private rooms at least, so it shouldnt be hard to boost most of the achievements.

Yeah it unlocks more activities as you level. Even the missions take on a different dynamic with 4 players as you can almost plan them heist style and have people take different roles. Especially once you done them once and know what to expect. Proper difficult heists where people have real roles would be pretty awesome.

Maybe they unlock as you get further in? I mean, the heists were a big part of the hype for GTAO, and there are playlists supported; it seems like they could do a limited-path or linear playlist with each stage of the heist.

I'm in the story with Trevor now, and... well, he has a different style of planning heists than Michael, fer shure.

One of the things which I'm surprised to enjoy so much about the game is the three characters. It is quite fun to notice the different way I'm playing when switching to each character.

When I play Trevor, I frequently find myself driving more aggressively, not giving a crap about consequences, and generally letting my id run wild.

When I play Michael, I worry more about losing whatever I've got.

When I play as Franklin, I get nervous when I'm in a nice neighborhood.

Also, not sure what happened, but each of my characters appears to have lost ALL their weapons. This was either after the heist, or after the Title Update. I also had read an exploit to visit Ammu-Nation and upgrade weapons during a mission, then fail the mission, leaving characters with the upgrades AND restoring the money they'd spent on them.

I'd not planned to exploit that, but I did find that I had started a mission with half-health and NO ARMOR, so I stopped by an Ammu-Nation, and IT WAS CLOSED. I'm seriously hoping that this is a one-mission thing. In GTA3 and such, there were so many times a visit to Ammu-Nation saved my butt and let me finish the mission.

The heists for the online portion are coming later. They aren't in the game yet. Rockstar mentioned it in some of the pre-release press.

Here's a fun bug. I decided to go ahead and finish up the campaign. So I load up the game and it immediately jumps me ahead to the next mission and the completion cutscene of it. One I hadn't done yet. Fortunately I had saves right before that so I just went back to do it but I was curious so I saved immediately after that mission to test it out and when I went into online and back into singleplayer. It again skipped me ahead to the ending cutscene of the next mission. So yeah there's that. No big deal as long as I keep back-up saves but still pretty buggy.

TL DR: GTA Online is fucking up the autosaves but not the manual saves at least for me.

Day 2 of GTAO confirms that the actual content itself is very weak. The missions are wack, the races are wack. But you gotta grind that shit to get the XP, to unlock more stuff to do.

Every time I play with friends I have to struggle on what to do. Since each "server" has like 10 people in it, and they are spaced way far apart, it's just like... yeah.

It's definitely a better realized online compared to GTA4's turd online.

Story felt like it really didn't have any stakes.

Like, the fact that I'm right by the ending totally blindsided me. The entire story amounted to 3 guys bitching at each other for 40 hours. Masculinity a key part of the story indeed.

I'm fine with three men bitching at each other for 40 hours. My favorite Elmore Leonard novels are about people bitching at each other. Some of the best zombie movies are about people bitching at each other, even as there are less of them left to bitch.

I played more GTAO today, went from level 6 or 7 to almost 12 in one sitting. I'm hooked. Hopefully I don't lose all my weapons again. Especially single-player weapons, as I went on a mission with Trevor, only to find my Weapon Wheel had the following choices:
  • Fist
And no armor, either, though that was my bad, not a glitch.
 :-\

Simeon wants certain vehicles delivered. I think I'll call him for those in private/invite-only Free Roam sessions. So far, my first attempt to get the car to the dealer was interrupted by a player who just blew up the damned car under me while I was just outside the Pay-N-Spray.

The next time, I didn't realize the entire server gets notified about the car, so when I got nearby, and saw another distinguished criminal fellow in the car, driving merrily along, I felt compelled to relieve him of it.

In a surprise twist, the other guy was waiting for me at the dock. We fought over delivering the car for about 20 minutes. It was pretty epic. I think the guy hates me. In the end, he drove the car into the ocean and quit out. :lol

Had one more endless hang on a shooting range load screen. Other than that, tonight was smooth as silk.

Rockstar has updated advice for anyone who's logged on to find their character missing in GTA Online: Do not create a new character.

The company has instructed players who find an empty character slot to return to story mode and then re-enter GTA Online through the pause menu, but only when the Rockstar Cloud Servers are working. If you encounter a message saying the servers are unavailable, keep trying until they're working. Do not continue online with saving disabled, as this may overwrite your character.

"If you have previously created a character but see an empty character selection screen when entering GTA Online, please back out to GTAV Story Mode and try re-entering GTA Online through the pause menu (repeat or wait until Rockstar cloud servers are back up). Did this repeatedly, to no avail.  I'll try again in a second.  I made a new character in my second character slot, as to avoid overwriting anything that might be able to be saved.  Looks like that was a good call.  Though, it never told me the cloud servers are unavailable.  And it's been like that for a few days.  So it's rather odd.  I should probably put in a ticket or something...

Yeah, maybe that's what happened to my weapons? Deleted by GTAO interference?

Man, believe me,  I was pretty upset.  But I'm already back up to level 17, and have the same apartment and more cars now, so I'm okay with it.  Not overjoyed, but I'll live.  I mean, it's just a game.  And it's a fun one at that.  So I'm okay with a minor setback.  A friend of mine showed me a great way to make really fast money, so if anyone on XBL is interested, just hit me up.  Up to 4 players at a time, $9k/1kRP payout for 4 minutes work at the longest, 1:30 if you get it down to a science.  Gamertag is the same as my forum name.  No idea if they'll patch it out anytime soon, so I've been running it like crazy.  I'll probably be on for a while later tonight, though I'm about to pop on and just mess around.

After 8 hours I'm done with this, might go back to it again someday, hate the characters, feels like a poor adaptation of shows like californication, breaking bad. They've tried way too hard and failed at capturing the cultural zeitgeist for me, is there a funny conversation happening as I drive to this place? I don't know coz all they are doing is bitching at eachother and I tune out. BORING.

Also the online never worked for me. It would hang on the tutorial mission every time, tried deleting patches, clearing caches, deleting characters but no dice.

As far as gameplay goes, meh. And I don't got time for messing with sandbox games these days. Shit is too tiring, gimme a fast travel that isn't a taxi plz

Another title update

Quote
A new title update to address the reported issues of game progress loss in GTA Online as well as other technical fixes, tweaks and enhancements is now available for PlayStation 3, and we expect it to be available by tomorrow at the latest for Xbox 360. This title update will resolve the cause of players losing their gameplay progress except for some specific instances where players purchase a vehicle and the save does not occur due to a cloud save failure. A fix for that particular issue is being worked on and we will provide an update as soon as we know when this will be resolved.

Fixes in this title update include:

Fixes multiple issues causing character deletion or other loss of progress
Fixes issues causing infinite loading, infinite sky cams, and missing interface options between jobs
Fixes an issue causing the "replay" option to be locked out on certain jobs
Fixes an issue where a player would become stuck in the mod garage when respraying a Sanchez motor bike
Fixes an issue where the Player became stuck inside Los Santos Customs during Online tutorial flow.
Fixes an issue causing the loss of guns and ammo
Fixes issues causing GTA races ending early because of players spawning too far ahead
Fixes issues in Last Team Standing where sessions would not progress past the lobby
Fixes issues with network errors when joining Last Team Standing using Quick Job
Added clarifications around when a player is using a temporary character in GTA Online during Rockstar Cloud server outages
Adjusts the monetary penalty for being killed in a One on One match

We apologize for the problems some players have been experiencing with lost characters or game progress due to this issue – please stay tuned for updates as we continue to investigate this.

In the meantime, please always remember to save your game before leaving GTA Online, otherwise you may lose any progress since your last save – this can be done by exiting back to Single Player through the pause menu. Finished the single player last night.

So this is probably my favorite big mega budget game since Skyrim. And in fact reminds me a lot of Skyrim even though its a different genre of game because they are both games of excess. As I mentioned earlier, its a validation of what big budget gaming can achieve. The world is diverse. There is a ton of content. My play time clocked in at around 60 hours. And it was legitimately fun to do a ton of it much as was the case with Red Dead Redemption. This is one of those cases where the $60 dollars I spent gave me a lot more value than I ever expected and that's not even taking into account the online portion of the game. The driving is imo terrific. The best I've ever played in an open world game that wasn't a racing game. The cars feel diverse but not easy peasy like the cars in other world games. It's a game I will play again at some point in the future and that's very rare for me especially with such a big game.

As far as the negatives. The shooting is still not where it should be for the series. For such a big series I expect more than competent. The AI shooting doesn't help because its simply spray at you and overwhelm with numbers. The cover system is too fiddly and often puts you on the wrong piece of cover. It was disappointing to see such a large leap in the driving but not as great a leap in the shooting department which is equally important. Like nearly everyone mentioned there aren't enough heists. This is mainly disappointing because of how great they are. It leaves you wanting more of them. The whole planning a heist and having different options on scores is huge. That's the direction the entire series needs to take. More feeling like a real professional criminal with real setups and picking crews and less just random dumb crimes. I liked the characters and individually there are good beats but overall the progression of the story is meh. Unlike GTA 4 or RDR it doesn't feel like you are necessarily building up to a great moment or facing a great adversary. It's more the adventures and relationships of these three characters which is fine and a valid approach but theme wise it never approaches the highs of the other two games I just mentioned.

Despite that stuff it never ultimately took away from me enjoying the hell of what I was playing though and being really immersed. As far as where it stands. I still think RDR still holds the crown for my favorite open world game this gen because I think it gets the gameplay and the story stuff and the immersion stuff slightly more correct as package than GTA 5 but its not like GTA 5 is insanely behind it and in fact I probably think GTA 5 is slightly better in the gameplay department but slightly worse in the immersion/story aspects. Very good game. And a package that truly shows what a long dev time, fueled by massive money can and should produce instead of what Assassin's creed or Bioshock infinite did.

Given some of the recent technical issues during these first days of GTA Online, and now that things are starting to look much smoother (touch wood!), we are planning to provide a special stimulus package for all who have played or will play Grand Theft Auto Online this month. We will be dropping a cool half a million GTA$ in the GTA Online bank accounts of all players this month, starting as early as next week.

unfffff

Also, there's a new mission to exploit "Mixed up with coke", $18k payout and 3k+RP.  Requires level 30+.  Get in on it before it gets patched!

Beat this. Overall, I left with a positive impression.

Story problems aside, I wish they were more creative and varied with the missions, as well as having more than 5 hesits (optional or otherwise). My goodness, I couldn't handle that credit sequence. Usually I make it a point to sit through them but holy shit.

There's only 5 heists?

And you don't even form a crew for two of them.

Edit: Actually, six. There's another heist like mission that the game doesn't count as one as well.

Finished it. Pretty baller ass game. They basically addressed the biggest problems I had with GTA4 which were:

- Bad vehicles controls
- No god damn checkpoints
- Not enough shit to do

And added a metric fuckton of content and more insane little touches than I can name (I was getting my hair cut and the lady was like "AW MAN HOW IS IT OCTOBER ALREADY").

I still skipped the credits. Nar nar nar

I keep looking at that image and assuming it's meant to be funny. Is Michael part of the joke?

I was jonesing to play this for the last five days. Ended up waking up at 5AM today, so I got some shooting-and-driving time in before my family woke up.

Interesting things about the latest patch:
  • It loads into Story Mode, even if you tell it to go to GTAO; then it transfers to the Online Character via the sky-cam.
  • Then it dropped me into an en media res scene, like it does with Trevor, Michael, and Franklin. My character was just AI-driving the car, but still. It was kind of neat-o.
  • At least in the session I was in, Bounties are the cool new thing to do. It appears to be a form of pranking or griefing. I got bountied after leaving a Job set to "Hard" after we failed it three times, and it was clear no-one was up to actually finishing it.
  • Ammu-Nation guns on the racks are all visible until entering the purchase mode. It looks better than bare walls.
  • They still haven't fixed a bug where worldwide game chat will auto-duck the in-game audio, even if I'm using an empty Party chat to avoid hearing other jockos.

It dawned on me that I had a bounty placed on me for "You jacked my car and now I'm going to jack you" by an unnamed entity -- I wonder if that was an NPC placing the bounty, as I had just jacked a car but it wasn't a player's car -- or if it is just one of the choices players can make when placing a bounty...

That's all NPC.

Thanks for confirming. Is it all new with the latest patch, or was I just missing it all before?
