What I've played is a phenomenal upgrade over GTAIV. It is night and day.

1. Controls - Vehicle controls have weight, but aren't slippery. Characters have weight, but don't feel like they weight 500 pounds. Aiming is great, cover is great. I can actually have fun playing the game now instead of fighting it. Refreshing!

2. Driving - In the last point, I said driving is better, but the initial Franklin mission just seals it. Cars in GTAIV had no sense of speed. In GTASA, when you got fast, it'd blur and shit. But in IV, I never felt even the fastest cars were really that fast. But this car you drive in V with Franklin is off the charts. Can't wait to see what I can get out of it.

3. Presentation - Great presentation. I remember people talking about frame rate drops in the initial mission. Have no idea what they're talking about. The transition from cutscene to gameplay is always impressive and smooth. Other games always have it so that the camera swings around the room and makes it so OBVIOUS that you're about to start playing gameplay. But GTAV will have a cutscene, and then the cutscene just ENDS and you're automatically playing. It's so cinematic and really impressive. Switching characters with just a simple button press is also impressive.

So far, it's addressed the main concerns towards GTAIV: it's not fun to play because the controls are god awful and feel like shit. Mission variety, locale variety, and side job variety has yet to be seen, but what I've played is pretty impressive.

edit: The paparazzi mission :lol I'm so glad GTA got its humor back. :lol

I haven't laughed this much at a GTA since Vice City. :obama Good stuff so far. The tv is excellent. That Cops show is :dead

Does the game lose its pace and go off rails like IV?

Pacing takes a hit half way through or so when it doesn't feel like the story is really going anywhere. But the game is fun as shit so who gives a fuck about the story?

Well, I wasn't talking about story, but also gameplay. Half way, GTAIV has the same missions over and over.

Every vehicle I've driven so far controls differently from the one before it. :bow

yeah, I came down on the game when I started playing the story missions.  Exploring, doing stranger missions, etc. were the highlights of the game for me.

about the story (late game spoilers)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the biggest tease is that there's the prison on the map, and you learn that Brad is in prison, and you think "there's totally a mission where you break him out!" I expected Brad to be the main antagonist.  Trevor alludes to Brad being as fuck up as himself.  Then there's the twist (sort of...Michael knew the truth).

The story feels like it stalls after a certain point, then it ends.

It's still a lot better than 4. Some of the Strangers and Freaks storylines are better than the main game tbqh.

The stranger mission where you shoot up aliens while on pcp :lol

This race is tough. Get something at high speed and get thrown from your car and you die. Hit ANYTHING, and you're going to lose your place. The driving is more user-friendly, but much harder to master than GTAIV due to the player ability. Using the ability is crucial to racing and you kind of have to use all the game offers you to win it. Maybe it's because of my car but that was the hardest race I've had in a GTA game. Jesus Christ.

Done enough story missions for now. Time to give it the test. I'm going to just explore the game world for maybe the next 5-10 hours in game clock. So far it's delivering. There's actually people doing things in this game unlike GTAIV (see: an entire amusement park abandoned, beaches abandoned even though it's Coney Island which is busy as fuck if you've ever been there, same type of npcs no matter what area;etc). Right now I'm just trying to figure out how to get out Los Santos so I can fill out my map.

I'm talking about GTAIV. It has all of these semi-interesting places, which aren't fully realized because there's no one fucking there and it's generic and lifeless as shit. You'll have the amusement park at the beach in Broker. No one is there, it's abandoned. Lame. You've got the actual beach, and no one is there in bikinis, drinking beer, or anything. This is supposed to be the GTAIV equivalent of Coney Island, right? Coney is busy as shit and a popular tourist sight. But in GTAIV, it's just boring. GTAV has managed to add life to its world by managing npc types, putting in scripted events, and making things more interactive. I just talked to some guy on pier about God and shit. What the fuck.

The main point being that GTAIV doesn't feel in any way like a fully realized world. It's boring. GTAV so far is the opposite of boring and is an exercise in the meticulous details of Los Angeles life. I haven't been to LA since I was a teenager, and this is enough to make me feel semi-homesick (not from LA but went there for a lot of summers as a kid). I don't feel the same way with GTAIV and NYC.

That dude is awful chatty.

Bike looks nice. It it is really $10k, I know what Franklin is getting for an early Christmas.

Played a bunch more Story and Online today. It is fairly seamless.

Still not happy about initial car choices. I decided to use the 2nd character slot, and it made me go through the tutorial stuff again.  The Buffalo and FQ2 were literally the only vehicles around. Then a Maserati-like convertible showed up, and I dropped everything to get it. Even this midrange vehicle is locked out - "This is a premium vehicle and already being tracked." :maf

It is great that there are so many currencies and tiered rewards, but locking out these cars and other Players' cars is quite a limitation.

Someone remotely blew up a car that I'd 'jacked. So.. If that's a thing, there is an abuse prevention in place.

I dunno, maybe I'm just unaccustomed to feeling strapped for cash in a GTA game...

What's weird is, most of the characters look the same. There is very little differentiation in facial features, and the broad strokes of character are in race and hairstyle. So... an accurate representation of Los Angeles.

I did like the idea a bunch as well, but the UI is clumsy, and the results are a little underwhelming. I would pay for DLC which allows play as Berry the Clean-Cut Hemp Advocate, Jessie Who Has Daddy Issues, or Fabien LaRouche the Yoga Instructor. "Did someone say 'Yoga'?" Namaste. :bow2

Online and a mute protagonist continue to inspire me. My goodness, this is a heap of fun.

What's the best way to make money? I've got less than I'd like, even playing up to level 13 or 14 or so, haven't even bought the cheap-o apartment yet.

Playing missions seems to be the best cash infusion for the time involved, but I want more stuff in Free Mode. So far, it seems like there's:
  • sell cars to Los Santos Customs
  • find Simeon's cars while roaming, sell at docks
  • rob stores (meh)
  • hunt The Deadliest Game (find Wanted Players)

Anything else?

I hadn't gotten mine last night.

So far I've made money online by robbing stores and doing missions with higher level people.  The missions when you start out are a joke.  Rob stores instead.  2k a pop and easy as hell to get away.  You can get 30k in 20 minutes.

Jesus, this game is monstrous. This morning before I left I decided to do a 30 minute travel session to get to the Vinewood sign. It took me thirty minutes to finally find it. There's so many pathways upon pathways, roads within roads on the hills. Take one road and you'll wind up in a place you didn't intend. And this is just one part of Los Santos. They may not have lied when they said it's bigger than IV, RDR, and SA combined.

I never bothered consulting the map that came with GTAIV once. I had no reason to. But I'm consulting the map for V a lot. It reminds me of GTASA in that regard. The fact that the entire map is hidden under fog adds to the element of exploration. Exploring is a huge thing for me when it comes to sandbox games like GTA and GTAV is delivering. Adventuring should feel like an adventure. I should feel lost, I should feel like I have to consult something to find where I want to go. I should feel like the city is a labyrinth and I have no idea how to get out. This game utterly delivers on this claim.

Yeah, I'm still not bored of V's world yet, much in the same way I wasn't with RDR.

For IV, I just used the taxi's not long after unlocking new islands since there really wasn't anything interesting for me to see.

The wanted level system in this game is kinda weird. A one star seems to take longer to shake than a two star wanted level. I'm also mixed on the fact that a one star goes up to two if the cops see you again after losing them.

Also, I have to reevaluate my opinion on going on kill sprees. Yeah, running around and shooting down people is gonna get you killed a lot faster than previous GTAs, but the wealth of options you have while in a vehicle dwarfs other GTA's and makes the chases that much more fun. So yeah, I saw a large group of people amassed in a small alley like area, so I sticky bombed the ground and blew them all up. The cops came after me, so I stole a shitty slow lowrider and dipped. During the chase, I used Franklin's slow down ability to aim and shoot at the cops chasing me as well as blowing up two popo cruisers at once by using a sticky. Eventually, I was shot down on a hill after I made my last stand since my car was too damaged, but I got two choppers with me.

Just started this last night. So far game is: :lawd

As others have said the size, and amount of detail put into the game world is nothing short of staggering. During an early mission you break into someones house and see someone playing videogames. I spent like 2 minutes just watching the game the NPC was playing. It was mesmerizing.

I can see myself playing this for a loooooong time.

I love the presentation a lot. Like the mission you're talking about, when you're driving as Franklin in the SUV and suddenly Michael has a gun to your head? The transition was fantastic. Rockstar did a great job with the games aesthetic and sense of flow. It's very consistent and always stylish.

The game drives this further by making the world feel alive. In sandbox games, or games PERIOD, the npcs typically just stand there, and say random shit when you approach them. In GTAV, you go into Franklin's house and then you have his aunt watching tv on the couch, and you can join her like it ain't no thang. Or she'll be trying to do crunches. Other times, the house is empty. It feels like she has her own life with her own values. The house deco and the cutscene dialogue reinforce this. Rockstar have managed to make Los Santos feel like an actual place, which is rare for games. The reviews were not in any way hyperbolic about this. Sometimes it's limiting, like, I haven't seen anyone in Michael's house yet, but it helps that when you switch to him, he's dropping his wife off at a store for her to buy more useless shit, or he's off somewhere looking sad just as an excuse to get away from the house.

This makes me really attached to all of the characters so far. Even that chick Tonya who I've met only once. They managed to actually make me care about her and her crackhead husband in pretty much an instant. It helps that the characters don't disappear after a mission briefing or cutscene. For instance, after the Tonya tow truck mission, she goes off and talks to someone on the phone. She doesn't disappear, it doesn't end with a cutscene. Or when Franklin has to go to the hills to get the suv, and Simeon is still talking to the guy he's trying to sell that car even after the cutscene.

I have a tremendous tit boner when it comes to meticulous details in a game. It's why I love Shenmue so much. Game worlds should feel like an actual place where the characters have lives. Haven't been this impressed with a game world since Shenmue.

Come to GTAIV. Where is Roman when not on missions? You go to the apartment and where is he? Does he only exist in cutscenes and when you ask him to hang out? Apparently! What does he even like to do beyond staring at tits and gambling? I don't know. Compare to Michael's son. He has an actual identity: he likes weed, plays games, is a slacker, can't handle exercise, and is short sighted. I know all of this about him with barely any hours on the clock. I know more about this kid in five hours than I did the entire cast of GTAIV. But GTAIV isn't alone in this, it's a problem with games, period. Things like this make them feel so artificial and shallow. GTAV may not be as detailed as Shenmue - the characters don't have set schedules, for instance - but it's pretty much the next best thing. And for that...

No. The app is crap. The Chop games are poorly designed and implemented. The Social Club access is more easily performed through a standard mobile browser. The car stuff will allow you to mod your vehicle while away from the game, and set up a custom license plate. Mine's "KRONOVOR"

Oh. To fix matchmaking you leave the session? I see.
I'm not sure what you're referring to. Anytime you're playing in any Mode, you're in a group of up to 16 people, including Free Mode. When you join a Job (Mission, Race, Deathmatch), that's a group as well, but after the win/end condition for the Job has been met, the Lobby prior to the next Job allows the host to invite more players. This can be from the host's previous Job session, anyone in Free Mode, Friends, Crew Members, and a couple more I cannot remember.

Meanwhile, I think if you use your phone to Quick Job, the matchmaking searches all currently open, matching type  Jobs, and plonks you in there.

I've only had trouble starting a new Job as Host, on Free Mode servers where other players are disinterested in structured play. Without previous sessions on which to draw, the choices to call additional players are limited. So I usually start by joining a few Jobs before starting my own.

If you're talking about everyone bailing on the voting screen for the next Job, and plonking your dilapidated group in the next Lobby, yeah, a clueless host can really be a drag at those moments.

Mmmm, I don't like Trevor so far. I felt the game was fairly grounded before he showed up. Now it's what the fuck. Plus, he's reprehensible. Johnny :tocry I know that's the point, but it makes him come off as a try hard. On the other hand, his missions DO kick ass.

Trevor is... I think he's a metacommentary on what GTA III was, and acts as interesting contrast to Michael and Franklin, who are both more in line with GTA IV's storytelling. I'm quite certain it is a conscious effort.

His missions are awesome.

He is... amazingly broken.

He has a tattoo of a banner-draped cross on his arm. Check it out if you get a chance.

Poor Lazlo.

What I meant is that there is ALL KINDS of random, fucked up shit people do in GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Rampages. Plowing through pedestrians on a sidewalk, and starting a Wanted run just to see what will happen. Jumping in a stolen car, and blazing from one end of the map to the other, just because. The media-darling example is going out, getting a prostitute, being serviced by her, only to kill her and take the money back off from the corpse.

With Trevor, he can do any that, and it's not out of character for him. He's chaos and curiosity. He's pure id.

I think I've pretty much given up on the online portion of the game. The downtime between missions is just unbearable.

Trevor is a great character. At first I was turned off by him as well and I think that's by design. But he grows on you. And he's an outlet to do all the heinous stuff you want to do in a game without having to put it through a morally conflicted character. He serves a real purpose which is smart on a few levels.

I just realized that I haven't taken Trevor to the strip club yet. This can only end well

I did that stripper touching mini game and I didn't get the uproar about it. It is sketchy, but it isn't any different from murdering a bunch of bikers for no reason other than they broke your statue of a superhero. Also, it doesn't outright objectify the stripper unlike, say, in Killer is Dead. After you finish the mini game, the strippers smile disappears from her face and you can tell she's glad you're gone, reinforcing that you're a piece of shit.

But internet outrage I guess.

Yeah Trevor is hilarious although his first major act when we meet him was shocking as we knew the character he killed it was a ignoble end for him.

It's interesting how I use different players for certain things,my Franklin kills for business not pleasure rarely messes around with Peds.

Michael has a short fuse and will punch out people who annoy him or fuck up his car. With Trevor I feel he would happily pull out a shotty and use it. The great thing is it seems R* believes that too. I've noticed that unlike the other two pressing the d pad doesn't say hello to someone he basically insults them. Straight away.

I was walking round the Latin part of the hood as Trevor and stumbled into a gang area. Pressed the D pad and Trevor asked them why they traffic women cue the 5 gang members telling me to get out of here, one with his gun drawn. I throw another insult and they all pull out guns I pull out my shotgun.

And fuck em up.

Yeah, Trevor is a walking shitstorm, waiting for an excuse to touch down and start damaging stuff.

As Stoney mentioned, I think it's savvy of R* to provide a character who can be used to do all the crazy, outrageous stuff.

Sho Nuff, if you are on the 360, join me, you magnificent bastard. I don't see any GTAV activity on xbox.com for McWild... If you're on PS3, I don't know what the load/lobby/matchmaking times might be, but if you're going through a group, and start a mission, you can just keep choosing to do stuff with that group. If you're doing a mission, then going back to Free Mode, then starting another mission, you're doing it the long way around.
