I think I've pretty much given up on the online portion of the game. The downtime between missions is just unbearable.

Yup, online is pretty boring. The fact you have to grind up to play actual fun missions (if there are any) is a horrible decision.

All the missions I was offered was all crappy team based ones, and most of the actual single player ones (or co-op) are just deliving bags of coke.

I'm going to do a big write up on GTAO later. But yeah, leaning on "meh" but the potential is there since Rockstar said it's an ongoing service.

Free Roam in RDR was pretty "meh" at first, and then they added a number of fun things. I think Gang Hideouts were just about the only thing going at the start.

If they add to GTAO the same way, there's  a lot of potential. I'm looking forward to Heists.

Yeah you can see some good ideas here. I personally love the feel of the free roam. Unlike GTAIV they've managed to retain the NPC'S so the world doesn't feel like some empty lot. That adds to a lot of the mood for me.

The biggest problem at the moment especially on places like Gaf, too many people are obsessed with grinding constantly no wonder there getting bored with it. I mean if you're repeating a level over and over or glitching to get huge amounts of money, whats the point? I can say saving for my apartment by just playing the missions, deathmatches,Races and stuff like robberies and gang wars was much more satisfying. Same when I brought my second car.

I kinda feel the same way. If you are playing the game like some mmo trying to just grind out missions to level your avatar, I think you are playing it wrong. For me its just a fun simulator. You hop into a playlist with a bunch of friends and just have fun bouncing around from event to event. Or you do a little free roam stuff to break it up. If you're trying to grind it for 8 hour stretches like World of Warcraft though, I think you're not going to have a good time.

My major complaint is one I knew kind of coming in. I think the combination of the free roam mixed in the with the discreet playlists within the free roam is confusing and diluting. One takes away from the other as its very hard to get non friends to stick together in playlists or fill rooms once a few people start to leave.

Yeah, there are a couple missions which have disproportionate rewards, and people get crazy about milking those for everything. Doing the same crap for the payoff, rather than the play, that's going to get old.

From the top level of the Interaction Menu you can set permission for who can enter your Personal Vehicle as well as who can hear your Voice Chat.

I hate these dickheads who do Missions, wait for you honking to get in their personal vehicle to drive to the objective, only to be told I can't enter their vehicle. :maf

It's even open by default, so these assclowns actually changed the settings, and then are baffled by their own choices.

One guy today, who was an otherwise immaculate player, superior to my skills in every way, started a mission that way, so I got in my own car, he kept honking and honking, so I got out and retried; he had unlocked his car.

I have to explore that Interaction Menu more. The Quick GPS function is INDISPENSABLE. There's also an Inventory for dealing with Cash distribution after Free Mode activities, munchies for on-the-go health restoration, and I think you can swap masks in and out, possibly clothes, which helps with Wanted level.

Beat it. It was ok.

The story was kind of.......just there. Nothing offensive, but it kind of felt pretty basic with really no thrills. I guess it was about camaraderie, but quite honestly it only really solves that at the end. 1st half of the story is waiting for something to happen, the 2nd half is about dudes yelling at each other, and then oh i guess you gotta stick with your homies. The End. Just kind of a boring story.

And while nothing was offensive, I can't say I liked most of the characters. Micheal and Frank did'nt really stand out as anymore then typical crime characters. but maybe thats a good thing, because quite honestly maybe their characters were a bit more subtle then most video game characters. Trevor though is the bright spot and lights up the screen everytime he is on the screen. His animated mannerisms are amusing, his strange moral code is outstanding, and he has possibly the acting of and video game character.

The missions are better at least then GTA4. Lots of variety with some pretty cool set pieces. It never felt like the entire game was just shooting missions. Dosen't hurt that this is probably the best playing GTA. Basic gunplay, but it feels good.

I do wish there were more heists though. The entire idea of "leveling you're crew" seems pretty pointless. I mean you can use a hacker what 2 times? There's just not enough missions were this potentially cool system means anything.

This is really the anti-GTA4.

Obviously thats apparent in how "crazy" it is with it's missions and whatnot. How it has actual mission variety, but it's also because of the story. I never tries to be that self serving crap that GTA4 was. Even without Trevor, none of the characters have Niko's guilt ridden behavior. They don't really question what they are doing. There's no real moral quandary in this game, the game avoids that. It also avoids the "I'm John Marston yeah I guess I'll do 5 missions before you tell me what I want even though I keep demanding it" problem as the story is pushed for the most part by the characters. Sure in the story they are forced into many situations by other powers, but when that happens it makes sense why they put up with these people. .

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's also pretty clear from the C ending how much of a response this is to GTA4. There is no "life is grim" ending. The characters say fuck it "we're making are happy ending".
[close]

It was a pretty good game, but I also think one of my problems is I just don't like LA. The game looks great and whatnot, but yeah the setting is not my favorite.

I can see why you would lock your car. I had a cunt kill me as I came out the hairdressers using that Lester radar perk steal my car and write it off.

Though I notice that even if you unlock it at the start of a mission the only way to activate it is for you to get out of your car and both of you get back in. Although I do love getting in someones car especially if it's a nice trip to the mission.Although there are a lot of bad drivers in this game.

I hear you. This dude was a stunning driver. I was super impressed with his steadiness and moves. Oddly, on "Titan of a Job," he didn't know about the jump to get into the LS Airport runway area. :lol

I'm such a bad driver, I can't stand driving when I'm in a multiplayer game. I end up driving by braille a lot, or just plain agricultural terrorism. Farmers hate me. Pedestrians hate me. The car repair shop loves me.

The get-out-of-your-car-and-back-in-again behavior sounds like a bug.

The more I play, the more I'm impressed. With IV, I had thought I had outgrown GTA. I haven't. It's just that IV sucked. Michael, as I anticipated, is one of the most refreshing game leads in recent memory. Franklin and Trevor aren't slouches either. But Michael is pretty much my favorite GTA lead already. His problems are so universal, and it's easy to feel empathy for him, and how he's sucked back into a life of crime. The mission variety is still amazing, and these are all characters I don't MIND going on dates with. I hang out with Michael's wife, son, Franklin, Trevor. It's all fun, because I just love the setting and the characters.

Easily my game of the year at this point. Haven't played Saints Row IV, but this game just keeps impressing me. It's just so fucking fun.

Likewise man, I'm only a couple of hours into the story (also played some online), but as it stands I'm absolutely floored by scope and level of detail put into this game. It's unprecedented. Agree with Michael being a fantastic, relate-able character. The acting, writing and mission variety - all superb so far.

Just had my first, true, impromptu GTAO moment:
I had botched the dumpster Unique Jump at Los Santos Airport, for maybe the 5th time. As usual, the cargo helicopter was on the tarmac, so I bagged that. I wondered if I could get the chopper's cargo hook into another character's car, so I flew off to find out.

When I arrived near a group of players who were pursuing and killing each other, one of them was in the police chopper with machine guns. The cargo helicopter is unarmed, so I started flying and bobbing and weaving around buildings to not get shot out of the sky. I managed to put it down on a downtown street, get out, and take cover. The other player was still trying for me, but I managed to lock on, as I was on foot, and took him out. I grabbed his chopper and circled the block in it, then landed right near him. I thought he'd probably just kill me, but instead, he used his Salute action. I Saluted back.

We jumped in a nearby car, and sped to a Race initiation point. It put us smoothly into the same lobby, and we had a kick-ass race (Lost and Found, I think?), which I barely managed to pull off.

It was pretty transcendent for me. This is everything I'd hoped GTA IV would be, 5 years ago, and then some.

Top Fun is THE BEST.  Have you played Top Fun III yet?  The runners are in single prop planes.   :lol

To win, I hopped in my single prop, and immediately flew straight up as steep as I could without stalling.  As soon as I could see the curvature of the world, I knew I was high enough.  I was cruising along like that listening to people die, and the other people in my party be like "Okay, everyone's dead but Jason.  WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?  ARE YOU ON THE GROUND?!"  As soon as I got right next to the point, I just bailed out of my plane and free-fell as close to the ground as I could before pulling my chute, and swung into the hangar for the win.  As soon as we won people started freaking out like "WHAT THE HELL, I DIDN'T EVEN SEE YOU.  I WAS GUARDING THE ENTRANCE AND YOU WERE NOT THERE".

Good times.

Yeah, GTAO is awesome with friends, and only somewhat good with randoms.

Top Fun series is the pinnacle of this. Playing with a full lobby of people you know, it's... this massive game of hide-and-seek while cajoling and entreating your opponents and teammates. It's sublime. I think the payout on it is low because they know people would play it all day otherwise.

Hilariously, my Online Mode character is much, much better off than my Story Mode characters. I still haven't figured out how to make a bunch of money in Story Mode.

What do you mean? By the end of Story Mode each of my character's had approximately 24 mil each.

I played about thirty minutes of GTAO. Lost to a guy in the starting race, was murdered by this same guy during the introductory gas station robbery mission, then was murdered three more times by this same guy as I tried to ambush him at various locations. Yeah, I suck at this game.

That would have sucked as an introduction to GTAO. You don't suck, you're just not a sociopath. Did you get his name? Let's have THE BORE Crew hunt him down and hound him like a dog.

As for "by the end of the story," I am actually wanting to play more side stuff to make money. Maybe it's weird of me, but once I finish the story, I'm uninterested in playing with those characters any longer; the impetus for me is getting money to buy stuff which helps with Story Missions. If there aren't any more of those to do, I don't need money.

I don't get the stock market. Assassination missions pay Franklin alright, and give stock opportunities, but I'm never able to tell what day it is using, when the stock is peaking, etc.

I can't sell cars in Story Mode, can I?

I guess I can do Street Races a few times, but there are only two of those so far in Story Mode.

There is no quick way to make money in Story Mode except Stock Market.

But due to the uncertainty involved with it, it is easier to simply take advantage of the Lester missions after you beat the game. You can hit over 500 million this way.

You're pretty much untouchable in the air with a wanted level.

Should have copied SA and had fighter jets on your ass once you reached four or five stars. Hell, why didn't they include a sixth star? It was redundant in GTA 4, but with two different military organizations in this game, I was hoping to fight tanks and shit outside the military base.

I don't have a mic. I need to get one. Our group prefers skype though. Better sound quality.

Because you're on the playstation.  I never have a problem with speech clarity on the XB.  That's one thing I like a lot better on XB than PS.  The ability to have party chat.

Given, the PS4 is including that from what I hear.  So I'm pleased.

Omg the sub missions was asswipe. Not looking forward to spending hours collecting chemical waste :tocry

I'm HANGING OUT for the Stimulus Package. I need a garage and some pimped out whips, like, yesterday.

Anyone got any pro-tips for making lots of online cash quick? I can see myself falling into the IAP trap once that shit is live :tocry

I got a garage for 30k Scene. I thought it was an apartment but it's really just a garage. I feel so ripped off. My hard earned money. :tocry

Feel sorry for anyone who doesn't dig this game.

Ended up taking a trip with Franklin to Blaine, and I saw a dam. So I decided to go check it out. Saw the water from the dam was actually detailed on the map, forks and everything, so I went to go see where it all lead. Didn't lead anywhere, so I decided to continue north along the freeway, taking in the sights at every exit. Lost car after too much damage, and was stranded but found a new vehicle. Just taking in the sights is fun. It's been a very long time since I've played a game that made me go,"What's that?" when I explore its world, causing me to set out just find what it is.

Yeah, I hear that. The world is just so, so detailed and feels like there's some logical order in its construction.

Also, the Blaine County stuff, unlike the utter weird emptiness of GTA San Andreas' rolling hills with nothing in them, feels visually rich and detailed. There are many different kinds of geological formation in the mountains, and the desert is believably multileveled and interesting to drive around in.

Be careful in the mountains, though: it feels like there are more mountain lions in this game than even RDR had!

It's a nice world they built.

It's just the game is so exhausting. Rockstar's design philosophies just start to wear thin as the game goes on. The constant start-stop of the main narrative/gameplay thread has always and still feels awkward. I'm still asking the question "Why am I doing this? Why is this happening?" and struggling to come up with an answer. It's a better game than GTA4 for sure, but it doesn't seem to care about keeping me interested in the main thread to the end.
