Photo Mode uses higher textures and more AA IIRC. If Drive Club could look like GT5 photo mode in game then thats amazing

A launch game running with the visual fidelity of GT5 in 'Photo Mode' is pretty ridiculous, honestly. That's a substantial jump.

I'd wait for high res direct screen grabs though. The lower quality Drive Club image is doing good and bad things in representing its IQ.

There's also that Driveclub is using (allegedly) fully modeled cars.  Interiors, engine, boot, etc.

Whether or not GT5 is better looking than Forza 4/Horizons is up for debate.  This was the just the comparison I saw in the gaf thread.

I don't think the game is that impressive but we haven't really seen much of anything.  I still think PGR3 is amazing looking; a massive leap from PGR2.  If diminishing returns applies to anything, it would be racing games, imo.  But we'll see what this game is trying to do, and how the rumored PGR5 will turn out.  Part of it has to do with the location.

It was easy to tell because GT5 has always pumped up the contrast, too much in fact, to give it a more "realistic" look

Driveclub model looks a lot more detailed but the quality of the screen is pretty inferior compare to the GT5 one so you can't really make a good comparison from them.

If you look inside the grills carefully on the GT5 model, they actually have the same details

It's just that the shadowing is so excessive, that most of the details are covered up

Eurogamer makes the point that there is as yet no 'defining' game for the PS4 but I'm not sure the PS3 had one either. MGS4? Uncharted 2? Did either of those set the world on fire like GTA III or Halo? I don't think so. What game do you think of when you think 'PS3'?

I think the Uncharted series would be the closest game to defining the platform but yeah there's nothing like Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X or even how Gran Turismo 3 was for the PS2.

looking back from 2013 or using the 2005/2006 mindset?  Back then people were excited for PS2-2 games.  DMC4, MGS4, Final Fantasy 13, next God of War, and the games that hadn't disappointed anyone yet.

Uncharted 2 probably defined what the PS3 was about in retrospect, and that's not praise.

Defining game pre-launch is a different thing from looking back.  PS3 pre-launch was a lot of MGS4, GT5, Assassin's Creed, LittleBigPlanet, and HOME.

Looking back, by sales, it was inferior CoD ports, GT5, and God of War 3.

I'm sure what they mean about PS4 is that there's no game there that is exciting the core, which is important pre-launch.  It's all unproven/mildly interesting or a sequel to a mid-tier PS3 franchise.

Yeah, I get Eurogamer's point but it really got me thinking about how bad this last gen was for Sony in terms of differentiating itself from the competition. You can argue for it being successful in certain respects vs the 360 but after all this time it still lacks an identity. Whereas Wii had Wii Sports and 360 had COD, Halo, Gears (and every other dudebro shooter).

It's tough for Sony to go back to well again with exclusives like Metal Gear, FF or GT because they just didn't resonate in the same way that their PS1/PS2 forebears did for a variety of reasons.

That said, those zeitgeist games usually come from nowhere...I remember Modern Warfare being one of the lesser releases that Xmas...

yeah, CoD4 came out a month or two after the crazy hyped up Halo 3.  No clue how world at war did, but Modern Warfare 2 was when it became the biggest thing.

GTA3 was unexpected back then, too, I think.  My friends and me were excited for it as a sort of Driver sequel where you can get out of the car.

GTA3 made a huge jump from 2d to 3d and it was different from everything before

COD4 looked like just another military shooter but a few tweaks here and there in MP, and boom, biggest hit ever

People who play CoD don't give a shit about what PS3's defining game is. To them it's either CoD or Madden. This kind of question is only relevant to enthusiasts and games like CoD and Madden are beyond them. It's not really a question of quality for those games, they just aren't "special". Hell I'd say CoD4 is beyond console defining and just Gen defining. What games are the enthusiasts going to look back at and in a "Best PS3 game thread" going to post?

It's going to be stuff like Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon Souls, ect ect.

It's pretty obvious that Uncharted 2 is the most obvious answer. I mean you core gamers loved it, it displayed how awesome PS3 games looked, and seems to be a leader and inspiration in the "lets make games real cinematic" trend. Hell, as far as I can remember, it seemed to be the real beginning of "man PS3 has some awesome exclusives" thinking.

Other then that, maybe MGS4. It was a big deal exclusive. I mean I think it's terrible, but a lot of people out there really seem to love it.
