They want the game to look like a film,

Quote
He continued: "The overall feel - that filmic experience... the one thing we brought to this is something people are accustomed too but usually can't tell. When you watch a movie you don't question what lens is being used. You don't question why there is grain on the film or why there's a certain lighting. Those are things we've been accustomed to seeing for 30 years. So when it's missing we usually go 'Wait, something is wrong with this image'.

"With this game we replicated a lot of physical attributes. We have true lens distortion. We built physical lenses into our engine so we could get something where people will look it and not be totally disconnected. Games have a tendency sometimes to be too clean and crisp. We thrive in the dirt. We just love the fact that it feels dirty. It's filmed in a very realistic way."

Apparently one of the reasons Ready at Dawn chose London as the setting for the game is because the city can be pretty filthy.

Guys, games like Resident Evil 4 did this. Just because they're trying to make it more cinematic doesn't mean they necessarily want to make it into a movie. :beli

That sucks.  The aspect ratio and sloppy performance were reasons I didn't play Dragon's Dogma.  Evil Within similarly has a wider aspect ratio but that gets a pass as a survival horror game.  Normally you wouldn't want a cramped picture, especially if they throw the hud in the middle like Dragon's Dogma does.

Still eager to see more since Ready at Dawn has a great track record, but a strange decision.  At least 16:9 was becoming commonplace when RE4 came out and it wasn't too jarring.

I would only have a problem with the aspect ratio decision if it was done because of performance.

If it's an artistic choice, have at it.

It would definitely explain why the game's graphics are so distinguished mentally-challenged good

yeah, fooled me into believing it was CG.  "in-engine," but impressive nonetheless.  I thought Quantum Break (Remedy's X180 game) was CG, too.

Xbox users were called "chikan" (rapists) because one of the tv shows ran a clip asking a guy what they were in line for the day of release, and they were getting "Saishyu Chikan Densha" which was coming out the same day. If I remember the story correctly they weren't even getting a Xbox. Nintendo folks are frequently referred to as Ninshin (pregnant) because they're NINtendo SHINja (nintendo zealots).

A couple years ago, out of nowhere folks started to group the two together, calling them "Chikanishi." It's frequently thought that it's the gaming blog owners themselves that spread this, because while 2ch users were like "???" the game blogs IMMEDIATELY picked it up. There were doubts of those blogs posting inflammatory threads for cultivation before, this pretty much cemented it (and this was before the big expose they got as a result of pissing off too many 2ch'ers). The term got pretty commonplace over the course of a year or so.

Around Jan 2012, Esuteru/Hachima barked up the wrong tree one day, and several subforums did a full-on internet investigation of his identity out of spite. His real name was dug up, yearbook photos from former classmates, and it was revealed that the site was run under an internet marketing firm whose CEO was his father. The characters of his dad's name could be read as "nishi," (it's actually said a little differently) and the character for "parent" can be read as "chika." Following that, anytime the usual inflammatory thread popped up making fun of "chikanishi," threads immediately filled with responses to the likeness of "oh, you mean Hachima's dad?" The term quickly disappeared off the face of 2ch, and even more quickly off the "Japanese gaming blogs."

so is the stand included in the box? I previously read it's sold separately.

people found another similar picture that includes Knack and the camera, believing it to be a premium bundle that's not yet announced.

I think there are two(?) gaming events between now and Oct/Nov when this will likely launch.  I know PS3 backwards compatibility is gaikai stuff in 2014, or they hope it will be, but there's no reason that PS1, PS2, PSP emulators couldn't run natively on the box.  PS3 emulates PS1 and PS2 games; Vita emulates PS1 and PSP games.  PS4 should be capable, although I bet it'd be a dick move and only be for digital copies.

"our machine isn't overly expensive or instigating onerous business practices" looks less like a selling point the further you get from MS' defecatory conference. then you're just left with paying $520+ once you roll in the online fee for a bland shooter, a bland driving game or a bland platformer.

New talk from some euro event about enhanced rumble in the dual shock 4.  The tech demos apparently sell the illusion of liquid or a ball in the controller, and by moving the controller you can feel the weight of it moving around the controller.  I think the xbox one controller does it too in addition to the rumbling  triggers (?).

Both of these companies are now pushing "super/hi-fi rumble" as a next gen feature.  I thought rumble was supposed to be a last-last gen feature.

and apparently you can't turn off the lightbar, so the PS4 really costs $399 + extra for some black tape.

PlayStation 4 reserves 3.5GB of its 8GB GDDR5 memory for the operating system, leaving 4.5GB of space for game code, according to current PlayStation 4 documentation shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed development source. However, further sources suggest that an additional 1GB of "flexible memory" may be reclaimed from the OS reservation, based on availability.

That's really weird considering that the original design only had 4 GB of memory in total. Why would they need 3.5 GB for the OS? The XMB is using less than 100 MB on the PS3.

Sure, but there is no reason to go overboard. It's primarily a game console and other features like Netflix streaming will manage with a small amount of reserved memory.

Because XMB is a genius system and design. What they are preparing for PS4 is tiled dog shit.
XMB was nice back in 2007. Now it's a bloated mess. The new OS design will be fine as long as it's fast and responsive.

Paying for online, now the PS3 OS is using more RAM than the XB1. Sony fanboys' world must be crumbling around them. All the stuff that they've been lauding over MS fanboys' heads is now coming true for themselves. Wouldn't be surprised if Sony made the PS Eye mandatory after this.

Seems like they're hedging their bets in case Xbox One's HDMI input overlay/multitasking features take off. A few years later they'll probably relax the RAM limits when it turns out to be unnecessary.

Either way do devs need more than 3.5-4GB RAM total to run PS4 games at 1080p?

The launch games will do fine, but as the next generation drags on every resource is going to get tapped out. The PS2 could do 1080i graphics with 32+4 MB of memory.

not the topic at hand reserving memory makes sense since that PS3 situation was a fucking disaster, but the amount seems a bit high. Plus if nothing worthwhile appears they can give it back eventually (like what they did with PS3 in its later years).
