I don't know the guy's history. I disagree that it's only as negative as it's ever been. There is a dearth of enthusiasm on the gaming side, unless it's for an object or newspiece can be enthusiastically wielded as a club in listwar / consolewar type crap. Maybe as Sony are on top at the moment the only way for a sensible discussion would have been for a halfway reasonable Sony fan to broach it. I think people should be able to call into question the quality of gaming discussion without facing accusations of martyrdom or what have you.

There's a lot more people since I first joined (and that was a loooooooooooooooong fucking time ago) and I'm with Oscar, it was always bad.  Hell it was probably worse earlier on because everyone who who everyone was and they got really nasty with each other.

GAF is about the same I think, but there is probably a perception among many people that the "stakes" are higher. The industry is shrinking and some people just don't want to accept that. Or at least the areas they care about in the industry are shrinking and its only going to get worse this gen

I've always been curious of GAF's geneology. Is it EL's place now because he's the only one who stuck around? I mean who decided he should be leader after it spun off from Gaming-Age?

Also, GAF's always been anti-<whatever you like>. Ninthings have a persecution complex because when it comes down to it, Nintendo doesn't take gaming (well, Grown Ups Gaming) as seriously as Sony and MS do (ironic considering N's the only game-only company of the bunch.) So there's less to talk about, and less Nintendo console owners on the forum, and less awesome third party games to hype, and so you get Nthings going into "what's your fave game this gen?" thread and going "WHY ISN'T <insert nintendo system game here> ON MORE LISTS?!?"

Speaking from experience, obvsly.

Sony was also crapped on a fair bit last gen but at least they could say Sony cared about competing, and I honestly feel like the PS3 did more things right than the 360 and (IMO) had better exclusives. (* haven't bought my PS3 yet, lol)

I gotta say, the fall of the Xbox and the butthurtness of Xfans on GAF has been mighty delicious, though. And not just from an N fanboy POV. They've been acting mighty entitled for years now.

Also since we're drudging up GAF's past, WTF happened to Dragona? She literally dropped off the planet. I'm not her e-stalker/lovepuppy like Wrath was/is but I hate that she's gone. And it's not even like with Red, where you can find her if you know the stones to turn over. AFAIK Dragona doesn't have a Twitter, doesn't go on any forums, etc.

Maybe I'm wrong about that. If so, I expect Oscar to say something implying she's active somewhere but not giving any details, as is typical.

Oscar's stated in the past that many of the bans people attribute to her aren't really made by her. Yeah, her boyfriend and her shared an account so I'm sure you can attribute bans to her but not "her" herself. But I think Oscar's point was that she didn't have "so many axes buried in so many dead bodies" that you think, Mac.

I agree.  There tended to be a number of piles of digital bodies whenever Dragona was in a thread or if it was one of her pet issues.  Since there isn't an SA style ban page where you can see who was banned by who, people made assumptions.

Dragona is fine.  She's not on GAF or any other public forum.  I chat with her a little pretty much every day.  She's well aware of her reputation, which is why she doesn't really turn up here or associated places, but at the same time, she's too busy for forums anyway.  In fact, for the last year or two that she was a mod, she barely did any moderating at all because her real life was so busy, so EL probably did her a favor.

The accusations against her were awfully trumped up, too.  Yeah, her husband did log in to her account and ban some people, but only slam dunk bans like posting porn or piracy links and shit.  If it took any judgement at all, he didn't touch anything.  But w/e, that's in the past now.  I'll give Dragona your regards.

i heard how at one point but i don't recall.  he either borrowed money from family/friends, got a bank loan, or saved up.  no idea.  i doubt it cost all that much up front though.  it was seriously a major money-loser for Jim at the time.  EL obviously moved it to a different hosting solution, probably a cheaper one than jim was using.

I believe he said it was around $2,000, which would be a pretty sweet deal.
