Of course, I need to get around to playing Half-Life 1 classic (NOT SOURCE) eventually. But I agree. I didn't care for anything Valve released until Portal and TF2. Half-Life 2 was majorly boring due to all the physics stuff. Good for a tech-demo of their engine, but making an entire game of that and traveling in vehicles?

And then Episode 1 somehow out-bored the base game. 2 would've been amazing if it didn't take the driving and have you micromanage like three-four things with that last battle of driving, resupply ammo/gravity gun "ammo", fight monsters while managing health.

Yeah the levels were repetitive but they were in service of the AI. Monolith didn't crack the AI nut, the level design did a lot of the work. That game owned.

The gunplay hasn't been topped since. I can't think of many games released since that could replicate the encounters in regards to enemy reactions either. Even the sequels couldn't cut it.
