It's the exact same crowd that was in the boston bombing thread, you know..the one where they were about ready to lynch that indian kid. Ohh wait...he was found drowned in a river

At least that was in the bounds of sanity. This is like saying that Indian kid got away and is planning to steal a news helicopter to deliver weaponised anthrax to NYC based on literally nothing at all.

These dumbfucks should be banned simply for excessive stupidity.

Look, I'm not saying that Putin ordered the plane to be hijacked so that he could load it up with old soviet nukes and crash it into San Francisco and then plant evidence blaming Ukrainian nationals so that we would back his invasion of Crimea, but damn, that would be pretty scary if that happened, brehs.

The facts are clear. The plane was diverted to Oolong Island where the passengers were subject to medical experiments. Once these are complete, they'll be loaded back onto the plane along with the rest of it being packed full of Gold Kryponite. The plane will be flown into New York City and exploded contaminating the entire region with insane super powered mutants. Obama will use this "crisis" to seize power, divorce Michelle and announce his marriage to Vladimir Putin. The two will then reveal that this was all actually a setup to build a superhuman militia force to defend the planet from White Martians who are hurtling towards Earth on a comet that's scheduled to land in Crimea on April 1st.

The collapse in the economy will shoot the value of Bitcoin and Dogecoin through the roof and the destruction of the major media market will lead to Dodd Scientifics being the only source of actual news during the Crisis. Funded entirely by Dogecoin, Dodd Scientifics will emerge in the Post-War environment as humanities last defense against the Obama-Putin-Red Martian alliance.

The facts are all there if you take the blinders off and are willing to see them.

I'll respond to your facetious post with a serious answer: the absolute minimum stopping distance for a 777 is about 2,800 feet, the largest aircraft carriers [the USS Nimitz supercarriers] have a flight deck just short of 1,100 feet. Assuming that the carrier was traveling in the same direction as the 777 and moving at full speed [35 mph], the 777 has an approach speed of approximately 140 mph [205 feet per second], meaning that in the roughly five seconds that the 777 traverses the carriers 1,100-foot deck the carrier would have only moved 250 feet. Even assuming the physics worked out that way, and I don't know that they do, that would still only give the 777 an approximate stopping distance of 1,350 feet, far below it's absolute minimum. So, no.

Can't speak for anyone but myself, but I personally think atheism usually includes closed-mindedness and a lack of wonder.

Dunno. I'd say I'm atheist for all intents and purposes, and I've never lacked wonder. The process of moving away from the idea of a purposeful creator actually made nature much more awesome to me.

Pretty much. While there are plenty of normal atheists in the world, the internet seems to be chock full of the angry nerd variety. When they talk about their atheism, it seems more like they needed something to make them different than any actual solid belief. These are really fun to make fun of.

It's an engineering dorm. Was probably just some nerds who were drinking and playing video games and didn't realize they were loud, not some insane frat party.  Could have easily just asked them to keep it down. Shit, he might have been able to make a new friend or two if they invited him in.

Instead he called the RA and then begged GAF to tell him he did the right thing.  ::)

Atheist is someone who is a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.

A theist is someone who is a person who believes or has belief in the existence of God or gods.

There are many variables of these two positions. You can be a hard (gnostic) atheist ("there is no god and no god exists") or a soft atheist ("I choose to not believe, and this doesn't impact my life" along side its brother, agnostic atheism,"I do not believe, but I do not know if I'm right or wrong"). You can be a gnostic theist ("There is a God, and I know he exists" or a soft theist "I believe but I live my life in a way that it does not impact me much" or agnostic theist "I believe, but I'm not sure if I'm right or wrong".

throw in full blown agnostcism, deism, and you've got a theology salad. You said earlier in the page that there's more ways to be theist, the same is true for atheism. Atheism does not mean that the person claims there is no God.
IYKYK

Himu

  • Senior Member
Also theism relates exclusively to God. What you were referring to earlier is probably actually Deism.

Yeah, like I said, this has become a debate of semantics.

I shy away from the label atheism because to me a god can be defined as the multiverse itself, an incomprehensible whole of which all things are a part of. Or even the "force" of life. So, whatevs.

This is why I don't like labeling my beliefs. You put a word to it and you box it in.

Himu

  • Senior Member
...That's not a debate in semantics.

And what you described is deism.

I suppose in that framework what I said is invalid, and I was using an incorrect definition of atheism.

It totally is semantics though, as we were working with different ideas of what atheism meant. I'll go ahead and concede yours is correct, because that's not really important to me how you define such labels.
« Last Edit: March 16, 2014, 03:02:49 PM by Spencer »

Himu

  • Senior Member
You said you probably had a different definition of what atheism is. A lot of definitions of atheism are negative and inherently false (I shouldn't have to disclose as to why). So I wrote the post to inform you while also defending your position that there are multiple ways to be a theist.

To me it's much more interesting and important to discuss the ideas than to worry about labelling them is all. My original comment was off hand and made during my morning poo as a minor distraction :lol

Approaching fedora territory, but I'd currently label* my beliefs something like "weighted agnosticism". I don't think you'd be able to prove any of these approaches right as of now, but that doesn't mean they're all equally likely.

*well, not IRL cause that would be dorky as fuck. Thank Whoever I don't tend to have these debates.

Himu

  • Senior Member
Labels exist for a reason. I know for a fact I'm an agnostic atheist. I can talk about those ideas while still knowing what position I fall under.

You say that the ideas are more important the labels, but you just admitted that maybe your definition of atheist is wrong. This is why labels are important. It creates a standard that we fall under. It makes talking of ideas that much simpler.

I don't think I have a negative opinion of atheist, though I don't think I'd consider myself one. I did have a bad experience with one of the more "militant" variety.

Back at one of the colleges I fucked up at, my roomate was a self defined atheist. I say defined, because it's almost as being atheist defined his entire being/personality. He wanted you to know he was one, that he didn't believe in god and neither should you. For he would try and convince you.

We went to a Catholic college and so we had religion classes. He was so adamant in these classes to prove how right he was, how there was no god. He wanted to prove that everyone who believed in GoD was stupid.

I told him that he was you know forcing his views on people, just like what he accused the Catholic church of doing. He just shrugged that off.

I have a "believe whatever the hell you want, just leave me alone" stance on religion. Years of Catholic schooling didn't leave me stereotypicaly bitter about the whole thing like so many of my classmates. Yet, it didn't make me a fan and thats ok.

To me, a lot of the atheists I see on the internet really want to force thier shit down your throat like my roomate. They so want to challenge your believe and will bite on any little discrepancy.  It's pretty ironic.
