I'm not sure you realize how bad the IE6 monoculture was for the internet. The utter stagnation it perpetuated clung on until at least 2010, if not 2011. Firefox was the only thing to start wresting the internet from that, and it did it successfully on the back of open source software by a non-profit corporation.
