Gone home is spooky but that's the only good thing about it.

I felt it delivered multiple narratives on different levels while inviting the player in to be an invasive entity within a familiar setting. it's ability to tell a narrative rather naturally was well done, as was its reconstruction of an upper middle class home in that time period. It mixes gothic literature with the familiar tropes of mystery found in many Adventure games. From a play point of perspective, the ability to interact with so many objects though they may be irrelevant is the clever thing, and the way that sort of ties in to the story of abuse and the related matter of invading other's personal space works pretty well. It also makes you think about what you do in a games so often while 'searching' for items or clues.

there is really nothing like a taste of la dolce vita (boone's blue, accept no imitations) while you huddle around a shitty firepit in some random asshole's (friend of a friend who lets you punch holes in his walls and not care) listening to shitty country radio in a busted run-down yard with a rotting wood fence, the crisp smell of GPC (ladies) and Marlboro (bros) stinging your nostrils while you dream of a better life.

sounds like my high school days in ohio  :lol
I traveled around ohio a bit after a relative's wedding and some of the outskirts looked exactly like how I remember my formative years in washington.

didn't see many broken cars, tho.

i was fortunate enough to try some of it on in las vegas a few years ago (dior homme), and it really does feel... good, in a selfish and indulgent sort of way. of course, a $900 hat and $3k wool cloak should feel good but still. :P

If you really want the spoilers:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The younger sister being lesbian isn't that big of a twist. It becomes evident pretty early on. The greater question is where is everyone else and what is it about this house in particular that's got a dark vibe. The family inherited the house from their uncle, but the town sees the house as the creepy old mansion.

Eventually, maybe a third of the way in, you learn of Sam's first experiences in romance and love, and as you do this you learn of the parents marriage troubles. You also learn that the father is a struggling writer who had most of his first two novels sent back to him because they wouldn't sell. The mother starts flirting with the idea of an affair with another park ranger and goes out to a concert with him. The father is drinking often and doing HiFi audio/video reviews for a magazine. His reviews start to trail off into his childhood and his publisher threatens to fire him. Eventually, a weird fiction publisher finds his old novels and starts republishing them in paperback with success. The father begins to write again. The subject matter of his books is a guy who travels back in time to warn JFK about the assassination. His third book was going to be about the hero saving himself.  As you piece other clues together, you eventually will find that the uncle molested the father when he was a young boy. and sold his pharmacy, and then trapped himself up in this house for the rest of his life while nursing his guilt with morphine. He hid in the house to keep himself from ever being tempted again and sold the pharmacy because there was too much temptation. (Little kids coming in with their parents.)

The sister and Lonnie's relationship continues on. They use the photography dark room to basically make out. . Eventually, the parents discover the relationship but tell Sam (the daughter) that she's just going through a phase. At the same time, Sam is accepted into Reed College and Lonnie is going away to boot camp soon. I am guessing on this, but I imagine the parents start trying to repair their own relationship after finding out about Sam and Lonnie. They go away on a relationship counseling retreat. Lonnie goes AWOL on her boot camp, calls Sam and Sam runs away to find Lonnie.

Why is the name of Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing's author being used to malign some indie game?

It's kind of hard to avoid reading Are You There God? while growing up (even as a cisscum boy), but that and the first 2 Fudge books are all that I've read of her oeuvre, yes.

e: My parents rarely let me read children's books beyond a certain age, but they felt Fourth Grade Nothing would help me deal with the fact that my sibling was an insufferable shit as a baby / toddler / kid / tween / teen / adult.

you're all fucking distinguished mentally-challenged =|

Anyways, it's more along the lines of gothic->sensational->mystery. The only narrative told from a young perspective is Sam's. I was reminded of Lady Audley's Secret, though I hate that book and there's little plot resemblance between the two, it's a matter of the gothic/mystery cross-over. The matters at hand and setting are obviously more current in Gone Home and GH is pretty much an epistolary done in the way video games can do that style.

Nah, I had to leave back then because I'm just reminded of GAF when I am here, nothing against you guys.  I really wish Evilore would be honest about what happened instead of making me out to be GAF's Edward Snowden; all I did that was "private info" was the fact that it was Evilore who banned the Darkpen guy.  He already knew when he was banned and what his ban message was, obviously.  But it wouldn't do anything positive to even try to say what happened there, I've been villified there for years now, which is kind of stupid since Evilore blurting out about Dragona and Lyre was far more private/personal info than "Evilore was who banned you, Darkpen" (which wasn't the point of pasting it at all, it was that I knew exactly why and when he was banned, to show I wasn't lying about his ban).  The whole reason I pasted that at all was that Darkpen was calling me a liar as to why he was banned (he said he was going to threaten every mod/admin to get his tag changed...I told him he shouldn't since he'd probably get banned, guess trying to help was a bad thing).

And the soccer thread thing was pretty simple.  A guy PM'd me about another user's racist/nationalistic offensive comments and asked me to ban the person.  So I did, and that upset those guys that they were moderated.  I told them it was me and they got angry that one of them was punished for bannable stuff.  Superblah got extremely angry and virulent, he was who I permed (offered to unban but he said no).  That put the soccer thread guys in an uproar and I reacted in kind.  I guess it worked out for them, though, at their footballthread.com place or whatever.

Anyway, I'm better off not having to post a buttload instead of play games and have a good time with how things are going, I would've left there anyway with that whole community thread crap that they implemented.  I've gone to maybe 2 links there from random people in the 4 years since I left, and have no desire to post there even if things were worked out.  I post at WYL maybe once or twice a year, just a random reply to something relevant (last post was to Viz about some CS:GO stickers going way up in price) then I forget about it.

I'm pretty happy with how things are now, so I don't wish ill will on anyone here or there or even the football thread guys.  I still want Italy to lose horribly, though.  I had fun when I was a part of the community here and at GAF, but it's just not my thing anymore, I guess.  Streaming and playing games is more enjoyable for me.  I wish you all well and success in whatever you do.  Take care.
