I never got paid to mod a forum :fbm

I never got paid for moderation either, long story short I was a bit of a personality, through that I became a mod, thereafter I became an admin, loved admin stuff started resenting having to do moderation, sucked at it anyway. Got paid to roll out a new website and community by some random guy, it became a thing I started doing like about one or two a year, nothing much. Some paid me more to stick around for a while and stabilize/fix anything that came up for x months after successful role out.

Anyway I really dislike talking about myself but find that I have a couple of days a year I go into overshare mode.

tl;dr bish sucks

Bish and Evilore are both admins.
Yes, and they seem to be terrible at it, as well as being terrible moderators.

But you just said being a mod and an admin are two different jobs
Forum software has roles for Admin, Moderator, Super moderator. Typically an Admin can do everything a moderator can. This however is not the function of an admin, an admin should make sure plugins are working, sql is humming along optimally, test, try and implement performance gains, read error-logs for common trends, stay informed about exploits, research ways of implementing features etc. An admin should never be getting in someone's grill (as in take action) because they posted something dumb. It's an entirely different skillset. Refer it to a moderator, report the post or something. Moderators should be assigned because they are excellent at moderating the community, they shouldn't be doing the stuff I attributed to admins before. It's very rare to find someone that can do both roles. the personality types rarely overlap

Not that this is a terribly important or interesting distinction to make, but I just wanted to note that there are two different kinds of admins in NeoGAF's structure. The role you're describing is just that of the sysadmin. And the sysadmins generally don't get terribly involved with moderation. gromph does next to no moderation. In his time, maharg never did any moderation. The forum admin role has a mix of people. The Accounts Approval account is actually handled by one person who literally only uses it to do manual account approvals. Timan has handled/continues to handle some of the layout stuff. These two do no moderation at all.

But stump and bish are slightly different cases. They're basically just super mods. Neither handles any of the backend maintenance at all. I'm not sure what all the Admin panel can do that the Mod panel doesn't, but they're not system admins at all. They're just mods that -- in addition to moderating -- also have access to the features mods don't: changing usernames, changing tags, changing user emails, and moving users among user groups (i.e. junioring/un-junioring users). But that's the extent of their administrative tasks. When the forum goes down, the forum admins aren't looking into what's wrong.

Please ask stump to move me out of the junior group. I'm pretty sure I've done everything needed to be a regular member yet my account seems to be broken.

So Bish is being kept around for his wonderful moderation  :what

Having a smod level on neogaf seems silly. I've always aligned it so that a smod is a global moderator (the places i worked at seemed to have infinite sub forums, so you would assign mods to sub forums because each one would be wildly different. They would only have moderation powers in that sub forum) smods would just be moderators that could moderate any sub forum. admins would admin as described above, the one and only sysadmin account would be there for recovery and would only be know to me and the owner. Of course in my context a moderator could do all the things you spoke of (changing usernames, changing tags, changing user emails, and moving users among user groups (i.e. junioring/un-junioring users)) because I wasnt lazy and just set up their rights correctly so they can sign into the ACP and MCP and only see exactly what they needed to.

Should have played Magic instead. :jawalrus

If you'd played your cards right (har har), you could have been the next Jon Finkel. :usacry

Even a scrub like Brian Kibler has a real job making mobile games or w/e.

How popular is Magnus Carlsen in Norway?

I don't think he's boasting, every random twerp can get their hands on forum software.

This is true.
Most of mine were paid jobs brah, the ones I still do today are hobby stuff. (well i still do one cause i get paid)
I thought that meant something when I was younger. :heh
Getting paid for doing work? Yes you will be surprised to find it still applies past being 15.
No, either side having a certain degree of competence just because money is changing hands.

Boss Moogle is a bit of a cunt.

There was some post by him in the World Cup thread that went something like "What exactly are French xenophobes? People who don't want their cars set on fire?". I think in reference to a possible France-Algeria match.

Yeah, a huge-ass memorial tournament that hasn't even been around 10 years, and only fucking nerds know about. Check out that stub of an English language Wikipedia page for it. :hitler

Easily the most quotable chess pro, discounting Bobby Fischer's raving anti-Semitic statements--but that's quotable in an entirely different way.

How popular is Magnus Carlsen in Norway?

It was a very big deal when he won the (classic) world championship. Mostly because Norwegians are v desperate to believe they matter internationally, in any way shape or form. The second biggest TV channel in Norway has broadcast a several tournaments he's played in since though, so there might be some hope for a continued interest, but it seems frail imo. The Chess Olympics are being held in Norway this year, interesting to see if people can muster some hype.

edit: Also, doesn't really help that the dude's not all that clever away from the chessboard, u kno?

Good choice, Brob.

I'd make a witty barb about staning for an attacking player who has a defense named for them, but we're already outing ourselves too much here. Someone is going to give us a wedgie and / or steal our lunch money at this rate.

Kinda like Tennis and Formula 1 in Germany then. Significantly less popular sports unless a German competes (and wins). :lol

So he's just a chess prodigy? Huh.

Real talk:

That an 85 year old knows to use the correct pronoun when it comes to transwomen, and that neither the judges nor him later on referred to the hypothetical transwoman as male, is a HUGE step forward.

This song shows that society is progressing when it comes to its treatment of minorities. Just a couple of years ago, the punch line would probably have been along the lines of "... but "dude looks like a lady."

Haven't even listened to it. But if the joke is that haha it's a woman with a penis, I can see why they'd get salty. unfortunately though, jokes at your expense is one of the cornerstones of being a minority and you have to deal. This doesn't mean being a passive bitch, of course. But choose your battles.

I'm not sure if I've ever witnessed a trans thread not break down into

"They should tell their partners!"
"No they shouldn't!"

Anywhere. Anywhere at all.

Tell person during the first fucking date, in a public place. That way, if he gets violent, you will be safer. Do not ask him to pick you up at your home. He will know where you live. Do not tell him where you work if he doesn't know where, until he knows and is okay with it. A lot of this is date etiquette that most trans women just didn't receive as teenagers, that girls are taught by their mothers.

I find it pretty simple. The thing that gets me is telling him right when the pants are about to come off. NO.

IMO, partners should know. Everyone else is gravy and none of their business.

A person you're on a first date with isn't really a partner though.

(Unless you plan on being intimate partners on the first date, I suppose.)

Regardless, Gaborn's old adage is what works for me--it's no one else's job to know your preferences, it's your job to communicate them. If you don't want to date people who are transgender, then you can air that out yourself instead of expecting other people to work around it.

Ex Military was great. The Money Store oscillates for me. New Bjork stuff was good.

But yeah, they died as they lived. Fucking with people.

Himu

  • Senior Member
A first date isn't a partner, but telling him or her on the first date will spare later heartache or worse. If he is not okay with dating me despite my trans status, then what's the point of dating him? This needs to be cleared immediately. Safety depends upon it and any other option is fantastical and idyllic. Going on dates with someone who doesn't know might as well be lying and being manipulative despite the necessary precaution and need for safety. Of course, I say this purely in regards to pre or non-ops, but it's far better to tell on the first date than to put yourself in a bad situation.

outside of a couple bands (shes kind of eeh on pavement wtf) and general taste in comedy we have almost zero overlap in media consumption. recently, i've been banned from leaving jesus lizard blasting in the car when i'm done with it. apparently going to work at 3am to lady shoes isn't as exhilarating as I assume it would be.
