I'm fine with Artsan being cut; that's something that works better in a novel than on film. When I read ASOS I was able to figure out who Artsan was based on a couple things he said when he first met Dany, but I can understand why the show would want to move the ball along faster.

Artsan is a legit thing that  wouldn't work in the show because we as viewers can recognize him off the bat. It'd also be weird that a knight such as Mormont wouldn't recognize Ser Barristan on sight.

The real casualty here is FAT BELWAS.

HBO’s Game of Thrones returned to its most-watched episode ever.

Thrones returned to 4.4 million viewers for its premiere at 9 p.m. and racked up 6.7 million viewers for the evening after its two repeats were tallied.

Despite heavy publicity and a rabid fan base, some odds were stacked against the show setting a record: Thrones aired on the Easter holiday, when TV viewership tends to dip, and ran head-to-head for the first time with The Walking Dead during its heavily anticipated finale. Plus, of course, there are some fans paying the iron price for the show. But as I predicted yesterday, Thrones managed a new high.

Thrones 10 p.m. airing was particularly strong for a repeat, likely benefiting from viewers switching to HBO after finishing The Walking Dead. Though HBO has not announced a fourth season on Thrones, you will likely see an official renewal within the next couple weeks.

Episode was good, felt a little clip showy, but it's the first episode so it's a good catch-up. The little cunt king is still annoying as butt and the girl tryin to cozy up on him is too. The rest of the Lannisters are cool. But my favorite part remains the North of The Wall stuff and Dany Army Builder 101.

Thoughts on no Bloody Mummers?

More and more changes to the book. Some good, some bad. Episode was much better than last weeks however. Shame there was no Bear and the Maiden Fair during the Olenna and Sansa scene. Probably the funniest chapter in the series dwindled to just a few lines. Still it was still great and the Queen of Thorns is perfectly cast.

Episode had some great moments and some cringe worthy moments. I definitely liked the Reed introduction although I do wonder how a non-book reader might feel about it. They come out of nowhere and don't really explain anything, why they want to join Bran, where they're going, etc. And stuff that peeks my interest (like Jojen mentioning how his father feels about Ned) might feel like boring or useless info at this point for a new viewer, dunno.

I also really liked the introduction of Thoros and company. I imagine some folks might complain that Arya's story is being given the Gimli Comedic Relief treatment, but it worked in this episode imo. I'm currently re-reading ASOS and Arya's early chapters have quite a few moments of light humor, thanks to the great Hot Pie of course.

Sansa's scene with Margery and Olena was great. I had feared the writers might try too hard to come up with some witty Dowager Countess-esque dialogue but it seemed pretty in line with what's in the books.

Then there's the stuff that didn't work at all to me: Shae continues to just be a bad experiment, an almost criminal retcon of Catelyn, another meh Mance Rayder scene, and some pretty bad acting from Afie Allen; I'm guessing if a screw was going through your foot you'd be a little more...in pain than that.

Overall it wasn't a bad episode and I'm glad it didn't try to shoehorn every character in. Also I continue to be amazed at how boring the writers have made Rob. His story is told off page in the book, and so far I'm not sure they've created a single scene of compelling television for him or "Talisa."

I'm really liking the Brotherhood stuff. I mean it is different from the books but still great. I'm starting to appreciate minute differences between the books and the show. Thoros is GREAT. Anguy :hyper

Yeah Talisa sucks. They should be concentration on how much fucking the two of them do to try to make a baby. On the other hand, the Cat scene was :bow

Gotta say I'm starting to agree with people about Mance being meh. Just...eh. This guy is supposed to be a badass, charismatic leader. He's been mentioned since the first season, and a major cliff hanger of season 2 revolved around Jon setting out to meet him. And two episodes in...huh?

PD I think you missed the part of Cat's scene where she says she promised to treat Jon as a her child after he got sick and that she broke that promise shortly after. She still feels the same way she always does towards Jon however it shows she can feel remorse for something in plight.

ASOS spoilers/discussion:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'll preface by saying I recognize the show isn't the book and I'm not a purist, but the Catelyn rubbed me the wrong way because it was out of character. Above all else, Catelyn loves her children. Perhaps the biggest reason she has always hated Jon is because he could be a potential threat to her children, specifically Robb. The idea that she would at one point want Jon legitimized as a Stark, and thus placed ahead of all her children except Robb, is ridiculous. She has never loved or trusted Jon, and it goes far beyond jealousy, which is how the show dwelled on. It has nearly everything to do with protecting her natural born children.

Last night's episode sets up some potentially troubling changes. Once she finds out Bran/Rickon are allegedly dead, will she agree to Robb naming Jon his heir? That would be ridiculous to me. I know people believe Robb ultimately decided to name Jon his heir but I still don't believe it; he had a history of disagreeing with his mother privately before ultimately taking her side publicly, so I can't help but think he named a Royce or another distant relative as the heir.

PD that is not out of character. The fact she STILL couldn't do it after praying to the gods shows she still hated him. Yes her reasoning is paper thin compared to the books but that's the TV show being the TV show.

I don't think so. Catelyn at that point is an emotionally wounded and flat out lost woman. That said the show HASN'T delved in her guilt over the fact she's the one who pushed Ned to going to Kings Landing to begin with.

Remember when in GoT (book) where she tells Jon to get out because "he's the one who did that to Bran"? Catelyn is an emotional beast who is illogical to a fault. I don't think that scene is put of character for that reason.

Actually she tells Jon she wishes he was the one who fell. And that sums up her thoughts on him throughout the series.

ACOK/ASOS spoiler:

I don't see why the writers have decided for Catelyn/Robb not to learn about Rickon and Bran allegedly dying, it really makes no sense. That revelation is what sparks the reactions that doom the Starks, from Catelyn releasing Jamie out of a mother's desperation to Robb sleeping with Jeyne. So far the show has completely ruined all of this. Not only has the show failed to do anything interesting with "Talisa" or even deliver a believable love story, Catelyn's decision on Jamie makes no sense.

It's pretty hard to do that in a visual medium like TV. We already knew what he looked like from seasons 1 and 2 AND the recap. There's no way to make him noticeably different and there'd be no way The Bear wouldn't recognize Selmy on sight. In the book it works because shit, books can do that.

That's instantly what I thought, it's kind of similar to what Jaime Lannister did for Tyrion but a little more subtle. It was such a cute moment with Bronn and Tyrion trying to get Pod to gab about it.

Pretty good episode. Ending was great although I do think the end credits song was pretty shitty, and kind of kills the impact. Seems like no music, no nothing would have made more sense for the end credits (or some sombre violins). It's like boom, shock scene. Then credits blast a song, which is way worse than this btw

Loved the introduction of the Blackfish; definitely got its point across pretty effectively. But the scene with Edmure reminded me of how wasted Robb's arc has been. Seems like having Robb scenes where he's actually, you know, planning out his war, would make far more sense than him lazing around doing nothing for S2 and early S3.

Stannis continues to be a waste on television, oh well. Didn't like that scene with Melisandre at all, although it sets up some interesting stuff.

Hot Pie's exit was great though, as was all of the Arya stuff. With respect to the Tyrion stuff...I liked the Small Council meeting, and I did like the beginning of the Pod scene but it went on too long. Again, it really seems like they're wasting valuable time, it really makes no sense to me.

One thing I don't like about that

ASOS spoiler
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Edmure/Riverrun change almost trivializes how much of a fuck up his decision was; Edmure literally lost the entire war for both Robb and Stannis by fucking that up. I knew the lack of Riverrun stuff in S2 would lead to some type of butterfly effect and I guess this is it. Killing the Mountain certainly is an important thing...but it's rather small when compared to delaying Tywin/winning the entire war.

And another thing: it reminded me of how poorly the show has handled Robb. Why haven't we seen him planning and strategizing? The episode makes Edmure's screw up sound like a big deal, but a new viewer might be confused and wonder why it was never mentioned before. Robb could have had scenes in S2 planning this with his generals, talking to Catelyn about her brother (to figure out what type of man he was, and if he was trustworthy), etc. It strikes me as a missed opportunity.
