I thought they wasted an opportunity with Catelyn. I thought she was going to bring up how she has waited for every single man in her entire life, but then they made it about Rickon and Bran again. And once again, assuring her that HEY THEY COULD BE ALIVE which goes against the entire point of her actions in the later sections of ACOK/s2

Well written comment at avclub in regards to the Pod and money refund scene.

I fucking hated that whole thing, and not just because the punchline was hacky as shit.

This series is beginning to have a serious problem with the way it portrays prostitution. Yes I know that women were seriously subjugated in that time period and it's the only way so many of them could survive and the culture at the time blah blah blah. But what the show is doing now, blatantly in this scene, is just flat out glamorizing prostitution. One of the most important themes of the series, in my opinion, is how it's pretty much about how all these super important wars and rights to rule and all this stuff the kings are literally burning the countryside over pretty much ruins the lives on 99% of the people living in Westeros. It's around the margins but still pretty important, especially as we get more towards the white walkers and how that threat makes everything happening in King's Landing super petty. Life is hard if you aren't born to the right position, and it will not get any better as long as Joffery cuts off Ned Stark's head and sends the country into war because he can.

This episode is good at giving us a taste of this. We get the slaves being hung up and left to die because who cares, they're slaves. We get Craster's daughters, forced to give up their children to stay alive. We get Edmund Tully sending a bunch of people to their death to get a mill that means absolutely nothing to anyone. Hot Pie manages to find a half-way decent living out in the country, but how long before the Starks or the Lannisters burn down that village, or the wheat to make his bread runs out? This theme is even explicitly stated at the end, with the Boltons sparing Brienne out of the promise of riches (the only thing that could have possibly saved her from that fate). Jamie gets his hand cut off, but only because these lower ranked Boltons are sick of him being able to get away scott free because he has money, and as Tyrion is discovering as the new master of coin, so much of that money doesn't even exist for the people with power. It's all just a facade.

Then we get to the prostitutes, perhaps one of the best examples of women trying to survive in a landscape that, as mentioned above, are seriously subjugated by everyone and can only scrape a living by literally being fucked over. What does this scene give us? Tyrion basically does the medeval version of the Beautiful Girls number from Singing in the Rain and the virgin kid is so good with his dick that hey, free of charge kid, we love having some dude we never met fuck us as long as he's good in the sack! Instead of any sort of indication that, hey, being a whore is probably awful and humiliating, it's all "this one is an acrobat in the sack" and "hurr hurr Pod, tell us how you made her cream so hard she gave you a refund!" Yes, you can argue that this was inferred somehow, but it certainly wasn't presented as anything but what was on screen, and the show is becoming less interesting in showing us that these women are essentially just as much a slave as anyone stuck on a cross in Astopor and, instead, look at those tits! Hubba hubba! Awoooooo!

Awful. And I really liked the rest of the episode too. But that whole thing really ruined a good chunk of it for me.

I don't fucking get what they are doing with Stannis on the show, I'm fucking rooting for the guy in the books but I wouldn't follow that pathetic creep from the tv show to the churros cart.

And Danny can't act and still hate the guy they picked for Jon Snow.

I didn't take it this way but it makes sense... Tyrion actually already paid for the whores prior so when Pod finished and they wouldnt take his money he would get a huge boost in self confidence. The scene with Bron and Tyrion gathering around for "details" felt odd to me.

Jon Snow AND Mance Rayder are completely miscast. They have butchered Jon Snow's story. Again. :sadbron they feel like 2 minutes of "what's going on beyond the wall scenes" despite the fact that Mance's army currently poses the biggest threat to the seven kingdoms and the wall that aren't the others. Just terrible.

Or at least that's the intent. But not what the show is articulating. It is just odd.

Yea, we barely know anything about Mance so far in the show. He has yet to have character building scenes, and now with Jon heading to the Wall with Tormund I have a feeling we won't see anymore meaningful Mance scenes for awhile. It's pretty odd, especially given their decision to expand Theon's role plus the various other filler scenes.

From what I've seen, Jon is one of the most popular characters among non-book readers so you'd think they would be doing his arc justice.

Mance was completely miscast, yeah.  Unless they're going for some angle I just don't get...

I agree that Jon's been disappointing so far, but I blame the writers/show runners more than the actor.

Honestly feel like I'm missing something when it comes to that storyline.  I'm not entirely clear on who're the people Jon's with, or the zombies, or what's the current task for tubbs neckbeard's crew.

Want to blame myself for not paying attention but I'm into every other storyline in the series.

Jon seems to still be loyal the Crows which suggests to me that when he goes over with the raiding party, he'll sabotage it somehow. And he wants to bone that redhead girl from Downton Abbey.

I think Samwell and the other Crows beyond the wall are making their way back home, without horses and food (I remember they passed the daughter-fucker dude before on their way north).

I'm wondering what is going to happen with Brann and Rickon, what direction are they going in?

Game of Thrones breaks ratings record once more

Quote
Game of Thrones was Sunday’s top cable original with a 2.4 up from last week’s 2.3 adults 18-49 rating.

In absolute numbers, the show was seen by 4.72 million people during its original airing, while another 1.04 million were added to the tally during the 11 PM repeat.
http://winteriscoming.net/2013/04/game-of-thrones-breaks-rating-record-once-more/

Wow, very impressive. That was the perfect episode to break records with, given the buzz the ending has generated.

I actually loved the nonchalant cut to the credits last episode, song and all. Just the show's way of treating Jaime like the giant gaping unsympathetic asshole he's mostly been thus far. I seriously doubt they would have played it the same if it were any other major character losing a hand.

As someone who hasn't read the books, I'm liking the show a lot.

My complaints up to this point are pretty minor. There are definitely times where certain storylines (Dany, Jon, Robb) feel like they're dragging because there is soooooooooo much going on everywhere but I can handle it.

I also think the show would really benefit from them easing up on all the crazy sex and titties every episode. It's distracting (dem semis) and even worse a waste of time when it serves no purpose to the plot, which it rarely does. It's like HBO has them on a quota or something. Just last episode, how many minutes did they piss away with the Tyrion's-squire-bangs-whores gag versus how many minutes they spent with Jon up north?

But yeah, even still, I'm really enjoying the show. It's the only drama on HBO I'm following anymore.

That's awesome.  It doesn't change the fact that having to sit through her chapters in ADWD sucked sour ass.  Everyone is stupid in ADWD... Dany is all "I'm just a simple teenage girl, tee hee!" and Jon Snow is all "let me send away everyone who is an ally and surround myself with idiots" Really the only thing that redeems the book are Tyrions chapters.  The book is on par with AFfC as the worst in the series.

That was one of the best episodes of the series, wow. The end gave me the same goosebumps I had when I read that chapter from the novel - in fact, it might even be better than what happened in the book. I can't stress enough how perfect Emilia Clarke is. She isn't the young girl Dany from the novels, but she has all the intensity and an impressive level of command to her performance; I may not like some of her less dramatic acting but she pulls of the Khalessi role perfectly. Just a stunning end. These last two episodes have really upped the ante in terms of great endings, and given this is ASOS...the rest of this season will continue like that.

I thought this episode featured some of the best changes and new scenes that have appeared in the show thus far. Varys' backstory was done great, but the addition of the revenge story took the scene to an entirely different level. Very good exposition - with no breasts! And since I'm on the topic of Varys I have to mention his scene with the Queen of Thorns/Diana Rigg, who continues to be one of the best additions to the cast.

And of course that scene led to one of the other changes I liked: Margery's scene with Sansa. So far Margery has been perfect this season, and I'm glad they changed the marriage proposal to be Loras (a character the TV audience is well familiar with) instead of his brother, who hasn't been in the show. Having Varys mastermind all this is great. I suppose it takes away a bit of the Queen of Thorn's scheming from the book, but I still liked it given the nice chess game the show has developed between Varys and Littlefinger.

some minor observations:

-I liked the scene with Beric but I feel like it could have been much stronger if the character was talked about in previous seasons. S2 did feature some talk about the Brotherhood, but it seems like having some scenes with Tywin, the Mountain, or townsfolk discussing him could have made his eventual reveal more impactful for non-viewers. I'd imagine many watched that scene and were like "Ned Stark told him to do what? Ohhh..."

-The Theon stuff...eh. I'll wait for it to play out. I know where it's going, and like the changes in theory, but I kind of feel like he should have been imprisoned longer before being released.

-I felt the Bran scene came out of nowhere. It wasn't bad but it felt tacked on given how developed the other stories in this episode were.

-Ros' scene...wasn't bad. Would have preferred something else but hey, at least I didn't roll my eyes; even though the continuation of this Pod stuff...ha don't know whether to laugh or shake my head

-Nice scene with Tywin and Cersei

IMO the King's Landing scenes continue to be some of the best and most focused in the series this far. Which IMO bodes well for the show if it gets to AFFC. (AFFC spoiler):

Margery is already such a strong presence that her competition with Cersei will make for good television. Likewise Jaimie will have a lot of great content in that season too. Too bad Varys won't be in that season, he's been so amazing thus far on the show. But who knows, perhaps they'll decide to keep the Queen of Thorns in King's Landing, that would be cool IMO

does the super slave controlling whip work the same way in the books? for as much effort as ben kingsly put into these super slaves, it's kind of an oversight not to have insurance for the exact thing that happened.

I don't remember there being a whip, but ultimately the slaves were completely loyal to their master. In general I don't think a state controlled by slave masters would ever think to use slaves to destroy their societal order, nor would they anticipate anyone arriving with enough gold (or in this case a dragon) to purchase a majority of the slaves.

S3 will cover half of ASOS, I don't want people being spoiled with discussion on what might be left out this season.

Should you really be clicking on spoilers without abandon in a thread like this?
