I felt so numb after this episode. It was more unexpected than the season one finale.

Welp, that's that. I've been re-reading ASOS (for the third time) and when I got to that Catelyn chapter I kept putting it off, just didn't want to re-read that part. It took me a week to finally pick the book up again and read her chapter. I still remember how I felt the first time I read that, and I still feel the same today. The grim foreboding, dreams, visions etc all pointed to something bad happening to Robb, but I held out hope to the very end. I thought Grey Wind would magically arrive or something lol.

They handled the scene well, although I still feel the lack of any Northern bannermen was a disappointment. No Greatjon, Mormont, Manderly, etc...not even one? Sigh. Oh well. The north remembers.

I liked the Dany stuff, and the Jorah/Daario/Grey Worm fight was sort of like Spartacus, pretty cool. Also enjoyed the goodbye scene between Bran and Rickon, although Bran's "oh btw I saw Jon lol" felt VERY weird/bad.

Next ep's name tells us how one of the arcs will end, but I honestly have no idea where exactly the others will end.

I think the books still handled it better, by virtue of 1. having you know Robb's bannermen and feel more badly for them when they died 2. Talisa is a total fucking flat character even though her death was quite brutal 3. Catelyn's inner thoughts make the scene that much more fucking nuts and 4. the Arya fakeout was dumb in the show.

That goes without question Zeph

I found Jon's stuff to be pretty underwhelming again. Seemed very abrupt to me. Hell given how Jon and the direwolves killed so many wildings it seemed like Jon could have just stayed and killed everyone else.

ASOS spoiler/ep10 discussion

Now I'm wondering where his arc will end. I have a bad feeling it's going to end with him warning the Wall, preparing to face Ygritte/Tormund's men, maybe give an inspirational speech...then save the battle for next season. That's going to be very disappointing, especially considering S2 ended on a similar note (Others about to attack the Fist, fade to black).

Yeah, I went through that arc with another fantasy author, Robin Hobb. She writes quite well, but I just found myself waiting to see when I was going to get kidney-punched, or sac-kicked, or the full dry rectal intrusion. I finally just gave up on her, and I think, sadly, I am beginning to feel a similar pattern here with GRRM.

The point of the story isn't really misery porn. The Red Wedding can be seen as a "clearing of the chessboard." This was coming for Robb since he decided to marry Talisa.

One thing I would have liked to seen emphasized more was the rite of safe passage or whatever that's granted by breaking bread in someone's house.  I'm sure that'll be discussed by people next week talking about how awful the Red Wedding was and shit, but doing so beforehand would have made it even more evil and shit.

Frey gave them food and said they were under his protection due to the laws of hospitlity, but you're right overall; I'm guessing the next ep will expand on that concept.

I really fucking hope Stoneheart isn't the last scene. It would cheapen the impact of the wedding to have her revealed so quickly. By the time that happened in the book I was completely shocked.

Nitpicky, but don't know why they didn't:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
show Robb's army being killed in the collapsable tents Frey had set up. Not a big deal but it's just a specific detail I remember from the book and thought it would pretty clearly convey what was going down.
[close]

I agree on the importance of them breaking bread not coming across as well as it should have, maybe they didn't want to
spoiler (click to show/hide)
overplay Catelyn's trepidations in the beginning of the episode so that the turn would be more shocking. Still, I wish they'd established it in one of the preceding episodes similar to how they had Cersei explain "Rains of Castamere" to Margery. In the books it really comes across that the Laws of Hospitality are the one thing you don't fuck around with.

I agree that this was Robb's foolishness catching up to him.  Personally, I think the 'bad things happening to people I like' applies more to Arya.  Two TV seasons worth of traveling to have it fall apart at the last moment.

From her perspective: Dad killed, mentor killed, brothers and mother killed, friends abandon her.  Who she got left? Sansa? AND she's stuck with the Hound.  Give her a dragon or magic queef or something OP, PLEASE.

Huh? This has been built up for a long time. Tywin planned it. That's what the letters earlier in the season were about. Cat preempted it by freeing Jaime and causing dissent within Robb's ranks. Robb sealed it by breaking his vows through honor love. Likable? Robb Stark was and always will be a fool. He should have sued for peace, but he he just had to keep waging a war while his fields, hometown, and people were being slaughtered because his daddy died.

Fuck Robb Stark.

Fuck Catelyn.

they are going to fuck up the battle of castle black, one of my favorite parts. Jon also wasn't shot by an arrow. I thought they should have done that to make the audience go NUTS and think Jon was dead too after watching the RW then next episode he's still kicking because HE'S THE BEST STARK.

Loved the episode overall, despite the brutality.  I thought this was going to be a big Dany episode, and the wedding was just a prelude to Robb doing big thangs.  No idea what's next.  More Stannis?

Judging from the preview and what happened this episode- some Ironborn stuff, Red Wedding reax in King's Landing (lol Sansa) and some Dany stuff.  Maybe a little bit at the Wall, who knows?

Larry says he's not going to watch or review the show after the finale. Some assholes spoiled the RW for him two years ago, right after S1's finale apparently. You could tell it sapped most of the energy and interest out of his reviews throughout S2, which admittedly wasn't a good season but still. Book readers have shit on him for awhile, and he got in some trouble last season for attacking Sansa (who, it must be pointed out, gets more shit from book readers than just about any character, yet has a large group of very creepy fans).

So yea, he's done with Game Of Thrones due to book readers being jerks.

I re-read the book passage. :bow

Quote
Catelyn grabbed a handful of Jinglebell Frey’s long grey hair and dragged him out of his hiding place. “Lord Walder!” she shouted. “LORD WALDER!” The drum beat slow and sonorous, doom boom doom. “Enough,” said Catelyn. “Enough, I say. You have repaid betrayal with betrayal, let it end.” When she pressed her dagger to Jinglebell’s throat, the memory of Bran’s sickroom came back to her, with the feel of steel at her own throat. The drum went boom doom boom doom boom doom. “Please,” she said. “He is my son. My first son, and my last. Let him go. Let him go and I swear we will forget this . . . forget all you’ve done here. I swear it by the old gods and new, we . . . we will take no vengeance . . .”

Lord Walder peered at her in mistrust. “Only a fool would believe such blather. D’you take me for a fool, my lady?”
“I take you for a father. Keep me for a hostage, Edmure as well if you haven’t killed him. But let Robb go.”
“No.” Robb’s voice was whisper faint. “Mother, no . . .”
“Yes. Robb, get up. Get up and walk out, please, please. Save yourself . . . if not for me, for Jeyne.”
“Jeyne?” Robb grabbed the edge of the table and forced himself to stand. “Mother,” he said, “Grey Wind . . .”
“Go to him. Now. Robb, walk out of here.”
Lord Walder snorted. “And why would I let him do that?”

She pressed the blade deeper into Jinglebell’s throat. The lackwit rolled his eyes at her in mute appeal. A foul stench assailed her nose, but she paid it no more mind than she did the sullen ceaseless pounding of that drum, boom doom boom doom boom doom. Ser Ryman and Black Walder were circling round her back, but Catelyn did not care. They could do as they wished with her; imprison her, rape her, kill her, it made no matter. She had lived too long, and Ned was waiting. It was Robb she feared for. “On my honor as a Tully,” she told Lord Walder, “on my honor as a Stark, I will trade your boy’s life for Robb’s. A son for a son.” Her hand shook so badly she was ringing Jinglebell’s head.

Boom, the drum sounded, boom doom boom doom. The old man’s lips went in and out. The knife trembled in Catelyn’s hand, slippery with sweat. “A son for a son, heh,” he repeated. “But that’s a grandson . . . and he never was much use.”

A man in dark armor and a pale pink cloak spotted with blood stepped up to Robb. “Jaime Lannister sends his regards.” He thrust his longsword through her son’s heart, and twisted.
Robb had broken his word, but Catelyn kept hers. She tugged hard on Aegon’s hair and sawed at his neck until the blade grated on bone. Blood ran hot over her fingers. His little bells were ringing, ringing, ringing, and the drum went boom doom boom.

Finally someone took the knife away from her. The tears burned like vinegar as they ran down her cheeks. Ten fierce ravens were raking her face with sharp talons and tearing off strips of flesh, leaving deep furrows that ran red with blood. She could taste it on her lips.

It hurts so much, she thought. Our children, Ned, all our sweet babes. Rickon, Bran, Arya, Sansa, Robb . . . Robb . . . please, Ned, please, make it stop, make it stop hurting . . . The white tears and the red ones ran together until her face was torn and tattered, the face that Ned had loved. Catelyn Stark raised her hands and watched the blood run down her long fingers, over her wrists, beneath the sleeves of her gown. Slow red worms crawled along her arms and under her clothes. It tickles. That made her laugh until she screamed. “Mad,” someone said, “she’s lost her wits,” and someone else said, “Make an end,” and a hand grabbed her scalp just as she’d done with Jinglebell, and she thought, No, don’t, don’t cut my hair, Ned loves my hair. Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold.
