http://www.advocate.com/commentary/2014/12/22/op-ed-trans-glamour-versus-trans-activism#.VJhbg_bqpfp.facebook

This article is one-dimensional, pretentious dog shit and I'm sick of seeing such sentiments being expressed.

My friend who linked it on fb worded this in a way I couldn't say it any better:

Quote
You know.. it's articles like this that make me really want to completely walk away from the trans community. It really pisses me off that if you do happen to fall into the normative female role, and can blend in with Cis individuals, you are basically shamed for not being queer enough. Or if a transwoman is beautiful and conforms to beauty and fashion standards then they are somehow just completely going against feminist ideals. Oh wait, except if you are a Sex positive feminist then you know a woman owns her sexuality and it can be empowering, not defeating.

So what should Lavern Cox or other beautiful trans-women do? Reject the notion of binary gender rolls and live in such a way that screams "I am queer and I live to LGBTQ ideals!"?

News flash to all the activist types who seem to think that all trans people hold the same ideals and values.. We don't all identify with the whole queer culture thing, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a trans person who chooses to aspire to fitting within the normative gender binary. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these women being glamorous for a magazine shoot.

Granted they do not represent the ENTIRE community, but who in this community represents every single subset of people in the transumbrella? I'd say no one just because of how different the various groups under the umbrella can be. I know many in this community who think Drag Queen fashion shows are the best thing ever, however I on the other hand do not feel that stuff is representative of my self.

These women are putting transsexual issues into the mainstream public in a positive light. Which is a good thing; however the author complains that these women are in the minority in the community, and basically implied the the rest of us have many masculine features and lack the ability to pay for corrective surgeries. Again utter and complete bullshit, as I said before the community is diverse, with some not needing any work to pass perfectly and others who yes always struggle. However there is a lot of grey between those two extremes.

What next, only transwomen who cannot or struggle to "pass" are going to be considered trans? Seriously enough with the "Privilege" shaming.

GET IN, GET OUT

(Image removed from quote.)

This is a great example of my point about identity politics taken to the absolute extreme. These groups are becoming more insular and ultimately less diverse/accepting as they find any and every way to further retreat from anyone who has a minor disagreement or difference with them. We see this in some black feminism in terms of colorism - ie the idea that a lightskinned black woman is less black than a dark skinned woman and thus doesn't understand "the struggle." There may be some merit to the idea that there are varying degrees of oppression that people face, but using them as an excuse to become hostile against people on the same fence as you is fucking stupid.

It's basic divide and conquer tactics, and the white man is nowhere to be seen. These groups are doing it to themselves. And it's partially why many of them have not and will not be successful or accomplish anything.

I actually agree with you. My stance changed quite a bit on it the past few months. However, it's hard to not understand where these ideas come from.

This thread owns.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Pegging/comments/3ifypf/psa_to_all_the_guys_who_like_tgirlsshemalesetc_in/

The responses are really, really damning. Even an "open-minded" forum on pegging is full of entitled asshole men. :aah Look at how they claim ownership (i.e. "THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH DOING ANY OF THIS") or wave it off. Getting em mad one step at a time. Nothing worse than a man you think is hot, and he asks you the most submissive thing ever:"can you fuck me up the ass? ;)" and calls you a homophobe or biphobe, whatever, because that shit ain't cute, it's not masculine, it's a complete and utter turn off. But somehow saying that isn't PC. THey say they see you as women, but you know a dude wouldn't ask a cis chick "can you fuck me in this ass? ;)" upon the first conversation. I'm all for open sexuality; I'm sex positive, after all. but some of these dudes who like to be analized are absolute assholes. Which is pretty funny.

Love putting to task dudes whose worldview is learned by pornography. :aah

It's funny because people thought that the rising in pegging culture would result in more open-minded men. It hasn't made them open-minded, just more entitled. Instead of now, they're mad if you don't want to fuck them up the ass which they deem their right to receive.

The Agenda was real. LGB has come to destroy us all.  :doge

Speaking of reddit links:

Shaka: Do you know any men that are actually like this (click through the gaybros for the comment thread I guess)? I know there's a perception of some being "very masc 4 masc" and hating anything that might make them be perceived as "flaming" which is mind-boggling.

So I think this person in my research group is trans.  (S)He's a friend of a friend that I have talked to a few times.  He's also probably has the best research at in the department too; like his work is crazy good.  Anyways I was looking up one of his papers and his home page now says his name is *girls name*  (formally published under old male name) and has a photo that pretty feminine looking.

No one has said anything to me about the change other than me looking at his home page and I'm not 100% that its actually a change since the girls name could be uni sex and he has always had a bit of a feminine look.  Do I keep referring to the old name/gender? Do I keep going with the status quo until someone corrects me and pretend I didnt see the home page? It's very awkward knowing someone but not knowing their gender and name.

I mean you could straight-up ask depending on their sensibility. I doubt they'd be offended if you go "hey, are you transitioning?" but I'm not Himu. So uh... she wanna fill in here? But I think the safest play would be to wait until the rest of the group goes with the new gender if you don't honestly know if they are transitioning or not.

Wait so are you confused what their gender was when you first met them? If they were a dude and are now wearing girl clothes then they're probably either trans or just into the feminine aesthetic (I've met both) and in either case, both groups seem to like it when someone shows genuine curiosity in their new experience. I'm guessing a lot of people just try to act like they don't notice a super obvious appearance change like that for fear of looking like a bigot but no one comes out of the closet if they think everyone is an asshole.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story said that the government would start covering 100 per cent of surgical costs. The government has actually been covering the cost for over a decade. Global News regrets the error.
