So, Bore, my brother is on Facebook posting outrage upon hearing on CNN that police are kicking in doors and searching and securing houses even if no one is home.

What say you to the civil liberties implications here, Bore?  Justified given the unprecedented situation, or no?

is this considered an unprecedented situation?  in what respect?  genuinely curious.

the scale of the fugitive search/manhunt?  essentially a complete shutdown of a major American city?

Sounds like the official response is maybe unprecedented, but the immediacy of the threat?  I can't imagine that finding the bombers in this case could be a more urgent or important task than finding the Oklahoma City bomber.  For that matter, we had the anthrax scare and the Beltway sniper running around in the post-9/11 days and none of the crappy local sports teams cancelled their games.

So right now I'm inclined to think that as traumatic as the event was, there was an overreaction by the authorities.

Didn't the response happen after they shot someone and attracted attention somehow?

At first it sounded like they were trying to rampage, but I haven't read what the final official story is yet.

anyway, part of it is the threat, part of it is security theater, and part of it is an excuse to mobilize all this crazy shit we pay for but never use.

Boogie, that sort of house by house door kicking is what we would do in Iraq. Boston is not Iraq. There used to be British soldiers that would do that sort of thing in Boston, remember?

So its ok to kick in doors in iraq but not boston?

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) claimed Saturday on Fox News that the captured Boston bombing suspect was motivated by radical Islam and on a "jihad mission." He urged the Obama administration to declare him an enemy combatant.

"They were on a jihad mission and the reason you want to capture a terrorist is to find out about what other terrorist are up to," Graham said, referring to suspects Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was arrested Friday night, and his brother Tamarlan, who died Thursday in a shootout with police.

"Ask the people in Boston. Radical jihadists are trying to attack us here at home. Every day we face threats from radical Islamists and they are coming through our back yard and trying to radicalize American citizens," the senator said. "The reason we wanted to capture him alive is find out about the attack and find out who he trained with and what connections to ... terrorism."

But let's not get too worked up over people like James Eagan Holmes, Jared Lee Loughner, and Adam Peter Lanza and do something RASH [like pass a sensible, universal background check bill], right, guys?

Do you think he was pressured into it by his brother? If his brother recieved training and was a zealot then maybe he had a way to convince the kid to do it. Not saying what he did was right, but going to school after the fact just seems...odd to me and in the photos it looks like he's enjoying life and has friends.

They're saying the older brother wasn't killed by gunshots, but his younger brother. The cops said they almost apprehended him and were handcuffing him on the street when the younger brother charged at them in a stolen SUV. The cops got out of the way but the younger brother ran over the older one and his body was dragged down the street. That's what killed him.

They just can't let this Saudi shit go, even after embarrassing themselves with that story about him being deported (which wasn't true).

I'm guessing they'll release some unconfirmed shit to fuck this guy over, maybe a sexual assault or some other unsubstantiated "if there's smoke there's fire" smear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nibiru_cataclysm

i learned something today

Quote
The Nibiru cataclysm is a supposed disastrous encounter between the Earth and a large planetary object (either a collision or a near-miss) which certain groups believe will take place in the early 21st century. Believers in this doomsday event usually refer to this object as Planet X or Nibiru. The idea that a planet-sized object could collide with or pass by Earth in the near future is not supported by any scientific evidence and has been rejected as pseudoscience by astronomers and planetary scientists.[1]

The idea was first put forward in 1995 by Nancy Lieder,[2][3] founder of the website ZetaTalk. Lieder describes herself as a contactee with the ability to receive messages from extra-terrestrials from the Zeta Reticuli star system through an implant in her brain. She states that she was chosen to warn mankind that the object would sweep through the inner Solar System in May 2003 (though that date was later abandoned) causing Earth to undergo a pole shift that would destroy most of humanity. The prediction has subsequently spread beyond Lieder's website and has been embraced by numerous Internet doomsday groups, most of which linked the event to the 2012 phenomenon. Although the name "Nibiru" is derived from the works of the late ancient astronaut writer Zecharia Sitchin and his interpretations of Babylonian and Sumerian mythology, Sitchin denied any connection between his work and various claims of a coming apocalypse.

Daily Mail said reports that they took orders from Obama. They were trained by the FBI hence the quick FBI response. The older brother isn't dead, he's currently on his way back to Russia and the young brother has been adopted by the Obama family to live in the White House. This is Obama's first official assault on America in a physical manifestation that goes beyond civil liberties.

FBI hunting 12 person sleeper cell connected to the brothers:

Sophisticated detenator? All reports have said they used re-wired toy car controllers....which is the opposite of sophisticated.

Obviously there could be a cell, perhaps the brothers weren't working alone, but I'll wait for a credible news story.

so.  it's monday.

where glenn beck at ???

I trawled the Glenn Beck website (ugh, his smarmy face is plastered all over every page) and this was all I could find.

http://www.glennbeck.com/2013/04/22/exposed-congressional-sources-confirm-saudi-national-was-to-be-deported-for-security-related-grounds-have-files-in-their-possession/
Quote
Monday on radio, Glenn Beck revealed further details about the Saudi national who was the first suspect in the Boston marathon bombing. Despite denials from Janet Napolitano and officials from the U.S. Immigrations and Customs (ICE) that a Saudi national was taken into custody in connection to the Boston marathon bombing, several sources have confirmed that Abdul Rahman Ali Al-Harbi was set to be deported for proven terrorist activity.

According to two FBI sources, Abdul Rahman Ali Al-Harbi was taken “into custody” Monday April 15th at a Boston after he was injured in the blast.

A source within the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) told TheBlaze that on Monday night Al-Harbi’s Revere, Massachusetts apartment was searched and property was taken out.

At 4:00pm ET on Tuesday April 16th, The NCTC Field Watch Commander created an “event file” calling for Al-Harbi’s deportation using Section 212 3b, which is proven terrorist activity. According to TheBlaze’s sources, tagging someone as 3b requires solid evidence.

Fox News reporter Todd Starnes has also reported, “The Saudi national who was initially detained and then ruled out as a suspect in the Boston Marathon terrorist attack had been flagged on a terror watch list and was granted a student visa without being properly vetted, sources have told me.”

Starnes report no longer appears on the Fox News website, but can be found on Townhall.

Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) has told TheBlaze that he has detailed information on the Saudi national and confirmed that Al-Harbi was to be deported under Section 212 3b of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Alongside three other Congressmen, Rep. Duncan has requested a classified briefing on the Saudi national and the deportation order.

Boogie, that sort of house by house door kicking is what we would do in Iraq. Boston is not Iraq.

Interestingly, that is the same comparison that my brother made (he did two tours in Afghanistan).

And I am not saying that I automatically support such search actions by the police.

At first, I thought the response was warranted, but since Friday I have come around more towards Mandark's position, especially considering how the lockdown and house by house search wasn't actually effective in finding the suspect, and it was only after the lockdown was lifted that a citizen located the guy.

I guess I'm still sort of fence-sitting on that front.

I watched a clip from his show today, the Saudi guy was his bombshell. Basically, the saudi guy was in charge of the terror cell that included the two brothers, and the FBI arrested him and was going to deport him (why were they just going to deport him if he was a known terrorist? ???) but then John Kerry and Obama spoke with the Saudi foreign minister, and now suddenly it's all cool and he isn't a suspect anymore. *que dramatic music*

Looks like he actually did reveal it: he's claiming the Saudi was directly involved in the bombing.
Quote
Conservative radio host Glenn Beck told his audience with certainty on Monday that the Saudi national who was detained in the immediate wake of the Boston bombings last week, Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi, was involved in the attack on the Boston Marathon. Beck said that sources tell him that the Saudi was marked by U.S. officials as a likely violent extremist. He added that this event, in combination with meetings between ranking officials American federal government and Saudi authorities, raise troubling concerns.
http://www.mediaite.com/online/glenn-beck-was-saudi-national-deported-by-obama-admin-involved-in-boston-bombing/
(video at bottom)
 :pachah

TLDR: Saudi gets captured by cops, becomes suspect. Saudi officials show up in Washington, meet with Obama and Kerry, thus resulting in the Saudi suspect being  turned into just a witness.

Why would we deport a known terrorist? He would be sent to Gitmo lol

would have been more interesting if the bombshell Glenn Beck wanted to drop was the fact that the terrorist read Infowars.

Quote
WASHINGTON (AP) — In the years before the Boston Marathon bombings, Tamerlan Tsarnaev fell under the influence of a new friend, a Muslim convert who steered the religiously apathetic young man toward a strict strain of Islam, family members said.

Under the tutelage of a friend known to the Tsarnaev family only as Misha, Tamerlan gave up boxing and stopped studying music, his family said. He began opposing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He turned to websites and literature claiming that the CIA was behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Jews controlled the world.

Tamerlan took an interest in Infowars, a conspiracy theory website. Khozhugov said Tamerlan was interested in finding a copy of the book "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," the classic anti-Semitic hoax, first published in Russia in 1903, that claims a Jewish plot to take over the world.

"He never said he hated America or he hated the Jews," Khozhugov said. "But he was fairly aggressive toward the policies of the U.S. toward countries with Muslim populations. He disliked the wars."

One of the brothers' neighbors, Albrecht Ammon, recently recalled an encounter in which Tamerlan argued about U.S. foreign policy, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and religion.

Ammon said Tamerlan described the Bible as a "cheap copy" of the Quran, used to justify wars with other countries.

"He had nothing against the American people," Ammon said. "He had something against the American government."

Khozhugov said Tamerlan did not know much about Islam beyond what he found online or what he heard from Misha.

"Misha was important," he said. "Tamerlan was searching for something. He was searching for something out there."

Strange choice of target, then. McVeigh should be shagged by a nail-studded two-by-four, but at least his target made sense. (EXCEPT FOR THE FUCKING DAY CARE CENTER. DIAF, McVEIGH.)

Doesn't this depend on whether you view the purpose of the lockdown as being primarily to catch the suspect, or primarily to protect the public? (Obviously ideally it would have accomplished both).

You can say it didn't help to catch the suspect with some justification but you can't categorically state that it failed to protect anyone, since no further casualties resulted.

It's amazing to see the complete breakdown of American news media in the face of the likes of Reddit and Twitter. Now, rather than just trying to beat other 24-hour cable news shows to the scoop, they're trying to outrace social media that has absolutely no oversight on what's said or who's saying it.
