I played through the alpha(more like a demo).  It plays exactly like titan quest.  The are a couple of differences though.  If you are out of combat you will heal.  And potions are scarce and expensive.  So what you do is if you are getting hammered normally you just run away and heal unless you know you wont survive and have to use a potion.

It has some spiking at the moment for me i dunno if it is a steam client issue or not.  The summons seem ridiculous.  The hellhound anyway.

Game is the hot tits, and it's still early beta

Combat is better than PoE
Skillz for Demolitionist are better than DH skillz in D3 (nothing is gonna beat PoE's skill forest, tho)
Lewt is fuck hot

Grafx are such dark
Screen tears regularly tho, even on medium settings

I love the combat so much, it's got a nice weight to it and the blood splatter + ragdoll physics is just too good. Way better than PoE and at least on par with D3.

The sad part is that I went into the video options, turned everything to medium (my pc is like 3 years old, and was only medium tier when I built it then, so it's way overdue to be upgraded) and changed the resolution but OH HOLY SHIT FORGOT TO ENABLE V-SYNC HUR HUR

How are the skills and customization? I was going to ask about combat, but it sounds like it's good.

mini rant: PoE's combat is pretty damn awesome once you get a good weapon

Did you ever play Titan Quest? It's basically that.  You get three skill points per level up to spend; you can put them into your general track, which as you do opens up access to new skillz, and dump points into individual skillz to incrementally increase them.

Eventually, you'll be able to multi-class and access two different skill trees.

There are currently 4 classes available:

Soldier- duh
Demolitionist- pew pew
Occultist- magic n shit
Ninja like dude- dude that does ninja like shit (rogue)

Also- the combat is legit better than PoE.  I've played plenty of PoE, D3, whatever.  This game is better than PoE and slightly not as good as D3, which is still the gold standard despite the whiners n haters.

Game still has limited respec, which is barbaric and stupid.  You can pay a mystic or whatever to respec, but as you do it gets more expensive.  LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME.

Not a big Titan Quest fan tbh. I judge ARPGs on how much time they suck out of me, which is why I still respect D3 even though I shit on it a lot; at the end of the day I put 100 hours into it. I've spent even more time in Path of Exile, which is undeniably better than just about any ARPG in some ways (customization, skills, trading).

Titan Quest tho...I played for a couple weeks and moved on. Then I came back later and tried the expansion and had the same reaction. Not bad, but it just didn't have the "hook" I need to sink into what is a very repetitive genre. D3 has killer combat/controls, PoE has infinite customization, D2 is D2, etc.

With PoE, it felt like your character progressed really slowly. A small stat boost here, an upgraded attack there, but Grim Dawn gives you cool attacks right away and you get new attacks and special abilities fairly often. It does things I really like in a way that PoE didn't.

Sounds great. I personally dont care for grindan that much so that's ideal for me. May cop.

And since your character is dual-class, you get all kinds of crazy min-max combinations.

Personally I like slowly building a badass character. Your weapons/gear can ensure you're pretty good, but building up skills to an "oh shit!" moment is more appealing. I love getting to that point, be it lv10 or whenever, when I not only reap benefits but can imagine how much potential the character has. It's a good hook to keep grinding/leveling basically.

Obviously I enjoy instant gratification too, I just prefer the idea of starting out weak as fuck and building up to being a complete beast.

I'm so torn.  I want this bad.  Been craving a Diablo loot game again and I love the TQ/GD art style.  But I really don't want to play an unfinished game.  I don't want to play a bit of it and then in 12 months play another bit of it and then 24 months later see all the bits I played have been re-balanced and I should've waited and played them after the game was complete.

BUT LOOT

/or I could just start playing PoE

Bebs- play PoE now for a more polished experience, wait on GD until more content/polishing is added.  Win-win.

2013-14 have been the years of an embarrassment of riches for arpg fans.  I don't think people realize we're living in the last of the golden age.

It started out really easy, felt like I was just breasing through hoardes of monsters. But right now? BRUTAL. It feels like every hoarde is filled with enemies at least one level above my own, lots of enemies with ranged attacks that also negative effect my stats, lots of enemies that boost the stats of other enemies. I'm getting absolutely clobbered here.

Started getting hard around...hmm...maybe level 14-15? Difficulty ramped up once I reached the estate. My class is Nightblade+Demolitionist.

Aaaand I finished the final quest of the beta in its current form. The clock says right at 7.5 hours, though there is still one little side quest that I can tackle if I grind out another seven or eight levels. Gonna rest now, three and half hour sitting has drained me of energy...

That's about where I'm at, and yeah it's getting harder.  I need some fire resist, and I'm also having issues where if a couple of lv 16-17 melee dudes hit me at once I can die since I'm squishy.  I wish I had increased move speed, would make kiting easier... zombie soldiers are no joke and can move as fast/faster than me.

I like that you can add components even if you haven't completed the set yet, so they aren't just totally useless like they were in Titan Quest.

Played through the first quest (to get access to the town). Picked Occultist, hit Lv5. Pets + DOTs ... just don't call it a Warlock? ???

Game is good. A bit rough, but it's still alpha. Combat poops on PoE (I could never get into that game, ever). Agree that respec costs are barbaric especially your first time playing a character (I put a point in an eye, thinking it was an eyeball Beholder-style familiar ... it's just a magic missile.)

A bit worried if they're just putting the first act out there, with a 6 man team, and no real income stream to speak of post Kickstarter... well, hope they get across the finish line. Especially since this alpha is almost a year late (original target was late 2012/early 2013).

Apparently, the way Grim Dawn is set up, they're not traditional acts in the same way that Diablo uses them.  They're just calling it "Act II" to signify that this is the second chunk of major content for the game. In other words, there's not really any solid information on that front, but there will be at least one more such update since this isn't the end.

I don't know what gave me a bigger boner: the armor localization in that video, or the fact that Triumph (who is well aware of my tank obsession) posted it :noah

Guys. I've always wanted something like this. While I love finding great defensive/armor items, there's always a bit of a disappointment level when you rush into battle the next time, expecting to take significantly less damage, and realize the difference isn't too big (fucking RNG). Being able to specifically customize your defense would no doubt allow you to see mitigation increases more easily.

GUYS. Imagine a high level dungeon that includes mobs that attack specific parts of your body. So like, snake or eels that mainly target your feet/legs, or little monkey things that attack your torso, or flying demons that go straight for your head. That could be the ultimate gear check. FUCK.

Path of Exile does this with resistances (fire, lightning, chaos, etc) as does D3, and I always loved when I could stand in aoe dmg and barely lose health due to my resists being so high. But having that concept applied to every armor slot would make me bust multiple nuts.
