Grim Dawn is 50% off on steam for another hour and a half today. OK bros, is it worth it? I know the game is dope, but I'm curious about how much content has been released? I remember when PoE was in beta and there were two acts available, ladders, races, etc; a good deal of content. How many acts of Grim Dawn are available right now?

I say yes. There's probably a good 20 hours worth of gameplay right now with side dungeons and shit, with another act on the way. No ladders and races (yet) but there's crafting, end game dungeons, farming of items, etc etc.

No co-op yet though, which sort of sucks.

But basically, is the game worth it at $12.50? Absolutely, yes.

Sold. Just bought it.

please tell me this "early access" language doesn't mean I'll have to buy the game again when it's officially released.

Interesting. ZiggyD is pretty hyped which makes me hype. It'll be interesting to see how the end game develops by launch date. I wish all ARPGs would just steal PoE's map system, shit is crazy cool.

Hopefully multiplayer goes live soon.

What's the combat feedback like?

Is it as good as Diablo, or as bad as PoE?

I might wait until the game officially released before I pull the trigger, but I'm kinda curous.

Combat feedback is basically like Titan Quest, so better than PoE but not quite as good as D3.

What Dog said. Melee is satisfying in a way that it never was for me in PoE; however I'm not going to try to convince anyone that it's mechanically better than D3, which I still find to be the gold standard of ARPG combat amongst the "next gen" ARPGs.

Grim Dawn doesn't do anything perfectly, but it does everything really well. Skill system is better than D3 but not as interesting/robust as PoE. Combat is leagues better than PoE but not as good as D3 as I said earlier.

As someone not very versed in Diablo games, after playing an hour of this it really just looked and felt like Diablo 3 except a lot less polished.  Seems a lot easier to get totally lost and have no idea where any of the items requested by people in their quests are.

I'm trying to play as a demolition/gun guy so at least I can have a different experience than D3 where I was a barbarian, but since all the enemies just rush me it doesn't seem all that good early on :X

Played a bit a few days ago. It's definitely rough around the edges but that's to be expected, so I won't hold it against the game. I doubt any recent ARPG will match D3's polish when all is said and done, but that's also to be expected given the difference between a AAA team at a huge developer and the smaller teams making this, PoE, Umbra, etc.

Overall I like what I see. Movement is responsive, and combat feels good. I know inevitable PoE comparisons have erupted but I don't see much of a difference in terms of overall combat. I think the major overall difference is in the beginner steps of the game. In Grim Dawn you start out with a very mobile character, a high speed weapon, and a good weapon; I started with a 1H weapon that has a 7-21 dmg range. In PoE you start out with a slow movement character, you find a average or even slow speed weapon, and your weapon dmg range might be 6-10 initially (for regular attacks). Yet once you get higher in level or to this stage you can't really argue that combat feels off. You don't have bodies flying everywhere like D3 or Grim Dawn, but the controls are solid.

One sort of minor thing...I really don't like picking up health potions. D3 eliminated that monotonous process, and I love PoE's system where flasks replenish automatically as you kill shit. In terms of other stuff, I like the talent tree so far. If you fuck up you can fix things, which is a plus; I wish PoE would at least allow non-ladder race league characters to respec at will.

Overall this is promising and I'll definitely be fucking around with it more this weekend.

Will watch after work. I remember Kripp shitting on the game a few weeks ago because the beta hasn't really changed much since it went live; he was calling it Grim Yawn for awhile. Now he seems to be more into it. I'll spend more time with it this week.

He made several character and came up with some kind of super-build to farm the closest thing to end-game. I've got next to no frame of reference, but some of those tooltips from the video where he showed it off spanned the screen vertically. Had me very interested, I've gotta admit. But I kinda want to wait for Act 2 to be finished.

Yeah I've been waiting for the game to finish before jumping back on.  Will definitely give it a good shot now.  I've heard very favorable impressions.

We need to get some multiplayer going once the official release is out.

It's definitely come a long way. I haven't played in awhile but from what I understand there is still stuff that needs to be addressed. Right now there really isn't an endgame. I'm sure that will be addressed eventually, and I bought the game awhile ago with that expectation. The physics system also feels kinda weird but you'll probably get used to it.

It's worth a purchase. Like Path Of Exile you have to go in realizing a small studio is making it, so don't expect D3 polish. Like PoE it has improved over the years and will continue to do so.

Game definitely seems more polished than 2 years ago.  Feels like a retail Diablo game at the start now.  Just gotta go through all the menus and figure out how to play.  Seems like there's a lot of options, which is good.  I just wanted a big sword to hit things hard so I went with Shaman but maybe there's a better class for that.

So uh, I played a shitton of this tonight and finished Act 1.

Playing as a 2H Shaman who basically goes around smashing stuff while having a giant familiar tree monster smashing stuff with me.  Oh and I shoot whirlwinds and bees at enemies and call down lightning on my enemies between smashes.

That said...the game is kind of boring for some reason.  I thought maybe it was because it was super super easy, but I knocked it up one difficulty (which is all that's allowed since the others are locked) and while it got a little more exciting on that difficulty, something about the game is kind of dull compared to Diablo 3.  I'm not sure what it is, the loot is ok-ish, being a 2H job the only really useful weapon drops are 2H weapons which getting a quality rare drop 2H melee weapon is a bit rare.  The combat feedback is alright, the most satisfaction is from my right click lightning attack that does crazy damage and takes a few seconds to reload.  Otherwise it's slash slash slash, which somehow feels less satisfying than slash slash slash in diablo.

I think it's also the level design.  The game is reallllllly mazey and the dungeons go on forever.  Just feels kind of tedious and kind of like being lost all the time.  You blow through area after area after area and there's never really a satisfaction of getting to a new area since the areas are all small and one "quest" can take you through a whole bunch.  Doesn't feel like strong distinct areas like other loot games.  The story is also pretty half-assed presented so it's hard to care about anything besides smashing and getting loot.

It's not bad.  Everything is polished and works and I'm looking forward to playing multiplayer with some of you guys.  Just it's a bit rote and uninteresting.  Coming from Mad Max which was totally rote and fairly dull, I'm not really feeling it.  Need to play something more exciting right now.  In a way I feel like a non-omg loot game is the western equivelent of a musou game.  Slash, slash slash going through motions.

Hmm, looking online the various build options when incorporating the 2nd job are pretty interesting.  If there's one area the game really excels its in character build options.  Lots of different ways to play the game.

That was always my one knock on Titan's Quest also. It starts off so slow and fairly straightforward. That game didn't really become great until the last 1/4 through the end and then the second run-through (and expansion) is where the game really shined and became something special.

Playing way too much of this!  I think I might've finished Act 2, or maybe halfway.  I'm off to find some farms.  Lvl.23 now and in Smuggler's Pass.  Some giant lvl.28 boss hero keeps killing me.  Might need to level up some.  Tried ranged for a bit, but ended up more comfortable going full on Shaman style with 2H Melee + Totem Poles & Lightning Blast & Giant Pet.  Picked Ninja for the 2nd job and mainly just using the ATK debuff for enemies always on effect and the mini-potion heal to alternate between real potions during their cooldown.  Doing alright until this boss hero.

Definitely would be more fun multiplayer.  Singleplayer has kind of a hard-to-put-down but waste-of-life feel of endless slow grind.

Pretty far into Act 3.  Game is like crack and I don't even love the game.  But I can't stop looting fuck.  I have a gaming addiction problem with loot games :(. Game is repetitive and just ok and I don't even know why I keep playing but I can't stop :x just speed running the main story cause the quests, like the main story are boring and not bothering exploring because everywhere looks the same.

The worst is that all the good blue epic loot I get is level locked a few levels ahead because I'm underleveled since I'm not taking my time.  But smashing stuff Is fun.

There's something about killing boss heros and watching rare loot fly out of them that is incredibly satisfying.

Game has come a long way since the last time I played it (roughly two years ago)

Combat is very satisfying. I'm going Arcanist (Replicating Missile, lawd) this go through, and pumping a few points into Soldier for my secondary class to gain a bit of toughness. The devotion system wasn't active last time I played, so that's entirely new and is an interesting secondary layer of progression added on.

I'm not sure how the end game will play out, but while you're leveling it seems like you can put points in whatever and play as whatever you like, which is cool.

Yeah, though I wish you got more devotion points.  It seems interesting and I've got a falcon that shoots out of my attacks through it now, but I've gotten maybe 8-10 devotion points total so far.

Just finished Act 3 on Veteran.  Pretty satisfying.  Lots of deaths but I finally have a build I feel pretty good about.  Halfway through level 34.  Act 1/2 were cool and all, but Act 3 on Veteran was a real challenge and took me a while.

I think my biggest negative is that there are hardly any 2H melee weapon drops.  Since I need 2H melee for my character as a Shaman class it feels pretty limiting and I'm mainly just upgrading stats through armor since the leveling is slow.  I keep fighting mages and shit who drop staffs and books and mage armor which doesn't help my character at all ><

...and after 3 nights of playing, I just beat the game on Veteran with my build, lvl.38 at the final boss, ~19 hours.  All quests done that I could find, but I didn't go out of my way to explore at all.  Can definitely see the game being much longer if you explore every map out since there's a ton of them and they're huge.

Pros:
+Combat feedback is good.  Normal sucks.  But Veteran solo play is a good challenge for the first time through.  Died a bunch, but the personal riftgate system made it not really frustrating, and it was way more satisfying getting through boss heros or boss fights on veteran.
+Character build system is amazing.  So many options, tons of varieties even within a single class, let alone within a dual-job class + constellation options.
+Cheap respec is really nice since there's so many options and lets you change up your playstyle until you find one you like
+Nice looking world/game from an art design perspective.  Armor sets all look pretty dull is the only downside.
+Decent amount of quests; could be more, but it's not bad
+Big ass map and tons of them, lots of secrets
+Fairly polished.  No real bugs encountered or anything.  Ran smooth.

Cons:
-Honestly, I think the loot isn't very good in this game, which makes me sad.  I got soooooooo much junk.  I'd only get a cool new weapon upgrade about once every 5 hours, so I'd be using the same weapon for 5 hours straight.  Even armor, I'd get a noticeably better piece of armor about once every 2-5 hours.  For most of the game I'd never get a single piece of useful loot.  I thought playing on Veteran with better drops there'd be some decent loot, but in my experience the loot drops were dozens and dozens of the same damn item over and over.

-For all the character build options, you have so few skills points, especially for dual-jobs, that the game really limits how much of the character's skills you can use at one time.  I think at 39 levels in, I had about 1/5th of the skill tree done on my main job, and 1/20th of the skill tree done on my 2nd job.  And on Constellations, I only managed to find 10 shrines of the 50, so with only 10 points I got like 2 constellations done (though tbf my falcon dive added to my main melee attack was pretty sweet; but man there's soooooooooooooooooooo much other stuff out there I never even got to see; I get that being a loot game that is for higher difficulty runs/extra characters, but still I feel like because there's so many skills I actually ended up seeing far fewer % of them in a single run than I would in most other loot games so it's a little unsatisfying there)

-Game lacks any theaterics what-so-ever.  When I beat the final boss and it just died like a normal enemy and the game just said "go see someone to report it" and I do and it's just a quest finished...yeah.  It was really hard to care about any of the story or characters or quests because it just felt like they put so little effort into the presentation of it.

-Inventory management is a pain in the butt like a lot of loot games.  No real quick way to see which armor stuff is better without studying it in-depth.  Warping back to sell stuff is boring as always.

Still the core gameplay is fun and on veteran it was the perfect challenge with my build so it was always satisfying pushing forward.  I think they definitely made a good diablo-game, even if it's not as good as diablo except for the character build options.

Oh and one thing was pretty annoying was having loot level locked because leveling is super slow.  In the last couple of dungeons, if I ever got any slightly better loot it'd be locked at 2-4 levels above me so I couldn't even use it.  When I beat the game I got a cool 1H legendary weapon that I'd like to use in my elite difficulty run...but it's locked at lvl.50.  And seeing how beating the game just took me to lvl.39...that means I can't even use the legendary weapon for like another 10-13 hours, which is so lame.

I liked locking the equipment behind stat requirements much better.

Wow you can't reclaim mastery points, now I fucked up my build. I reclaimed skill points and started to increase mastery in another class, then I noticed I didn't reclaim the mastery from the other one, but apparently you can't.

What a clusterfuck, feel like I wasted 10 hours now that I  do half the dps. Honestly this is a very bad design choice, why let me respec skills but not mastery?

I'm probably done with this game now as I'll never put in another 10 hours just to get this point. What an archaic game design choice. Way more punishing then any Souls game.

Expansion is out with a whole lot of new areas, bosses, 2 new classes, lots of new devotions, shit ton of new items, etc. Level cap has gone up too.

Unfortunately they still want you to play through the same content multiple different times on multiple different difficulties, which is boring and regressive as fuck. It's no coincidence that I finally was able to get into Path of Exile when they did away with that, I believe. I'll check this out in a month or two, tho.

Also, apparently there's a way to reset your masteries now, ARE YOU HAPPY YOU F'N WHINER. Also the game has supported mods for a while now so you could have just modded it and done it.

Lol you are bitching too  :lol

WHUT

I'm bitching about having to play the same f'n content 3 times, not that I can't reset my masteries, which you could anyway if you'd taken the time to go get a fucking mod. OMG ARE ALL YUROPEENS THIS LAZY WTF

Played a ton of Grim Dawn. I will eventually pick up the xpack. I got a 84 Conjurer set up for lightning pistols and a 73 Witchblade chaos tank. The Witchblade is by far the more effective build. Shit is ez mode. Looking to try out the new additions. Kind of more interested in the new constellations than I am the new classes.

Just got back into it this week with the DLC. Rolled that unbreakable retaliation Warder. Now I'M the hill everyone dies on. Great game but it's got way too much padding and crucible is fun for 10 minutes when you're gearing up new dudes.

Got a link to that WB build? I've searched the threads and haven't found anything comprehensive, updated from a year ago, or fun to read.

Was thinking about restarting but I don't feel like playing through the beginning again. Just going to continue as my current build and get to the end. I am playing a necro in Path Of Exile so I am necro'd out.

Um I made it up on the fly?

It's full into Occultist and 20 into Soldier. You take and max Posession and Witchfire. Take Curse of Fraility and Sigil of Consumption. You take Blitz, Forcewave and Cadence in Soldier, along with Mark Advantage. Put points into Mehnir's Will, Ovuergard and SHeild Training. You run Shield (of course). Take Field Command. You can run War Cry if you need to create aggro for tanking.

You put the weapon upgrade that gives you Chaos Strike on your main hand. Use that and Blitz to warp around battles. I'd have to log in to find the Constellations and what to tie to connect them with. I know you take the Imp and put Flame Torrent on Blitz as thats your opener. You got Eldritch Fire and Abom Might in there. I might have Hungering Void on something like Sigil. There's just a ton of defensive CDs and Vit + Chaos damage.Fire is your third damage type, just due to Devotions.  The Gear is tanky stats + Chaos dmg with Some Vit damage.
